And I also started researching more on this &#8220;plague&#8221; business.<\/p>\n<p>One thing I learned was that\u00a0the Coronavirus is not &#8211; strictly speaking &#8211; a &#8220;<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1584633529816_1369\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrEwhG5lnNeXwYAfhlpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByMHZ0NG9yBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwM3BHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1584662329\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fPlague_%28disease%29\/RK=0\/RS=TyEZcn8awoywa5YXSMI71KVqNUI-\" target=\"_blank\" data-c3f=\"5e7396b9f18ae\">plague<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/5\/59\/Roseduration.jpg\" alt=\"Roseduration.jpg\" width=\"181\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a>.&#8221; According to\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1584633529816_1369\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrEwhG5lnNeXwYAfhlpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByMHZ0NG9yBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwM3BHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1584662329\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fPlague_%28disease%29\/RK=0\/RS=TyEZcn8awoywa5YXSMI71KVqNUI-\" target=\"_blank\" data-c3f=\"5e7396b9f18ae\">Wikipedia<\/a>, that term is restricted to the &#8220;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Infectious disease\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Infectious_disease\">infectious disease<\/a>\u00a0caused by the\u00a0<a title=\"Enterobacteriaceae\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Enterobacteriaceae\">bacterium<\/a>\u00a0<i><a title=\"Yersinia pestis\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yersinia_pestis\">Yersinia pestis<\/a>.&#8221; <\/i><em>(Symptoms for that version generally included\u00a0<a title=\"Fever\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fever\">fever<\/a>, weakness and\u00a0<a title=\"Headache\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Headache\">headache<\/a>, similar to the Coronavirus.) <\/em>But the most familiar form is\u00a0<a title=\"Bubonic plague\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bubonic_plague\">bubonic plague<\/a>, which was one of <strong><em>three<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0types of this plague:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Bubonic and septicemic plague are generally spread by\u00a0<a title=\"Flea\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flea\">flea<\/a>\u00a0bites or handling an infected animal.\u00a0The pneumonitic form is generally spread between people\u00a0<a title=\"Airborne disease\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Airborne_disease\">through the air<\/a>\u00a0via infectious droplets.\u00a0Diagnosis is typically by finding the bacterium in fluid from a lymph node, blood or\u00a0<a title=\"Sputum\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sputum\">sputum<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/c\/c6\/La_Peste_book_cover.jpg\/800px-La_Peste_book_cover.jpg\" alt=\"La Peste book cover.jpg\" width=\"156\" height=\"250\" \/>The good news: There is now both vaccine and valid treatment for the plague of in Camus&#8217; novel, at left. <em>(Like &#8220;<a title=\"Antibiotic\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Antibiotic\">antibiotics<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Supportive care\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Supportive_care\">supportive care<\/a>.&#8221; With which the risk of death through treatment is &#8220;about 10% while without it is about 70%.&#8221;) <\/em>Not so with Coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>Not yet anyway&#8230; <em>(And &#8220;La Peste&#8221; is French for &#8220;The Plague.&#8221;)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I also learned the difference between <a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrEwhG5lnNeXwYAfxlpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByaWg0YW05BGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwM4BHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1584662329\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.verywellhealth.com%2fdifference-between-epidemic-and-pandemic-2615168\/RK=0\/RS=junv1Ga9rc32SO9YGMxPUO0W4DU-\" target=\"_blank\" data-c3f=\"5e7396b9f19e7\">epidemic and a pandemic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The web article\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrEwhG5lnNeXwYAfxlpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByaWg0YW05BGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwM4BHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1584662329\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.verywellhealth.com%2fdifference-between-epidemic-and-pandemic-2615168\/RK=0\/RS=junv1Ga9rc32SO9YGMxPUO0W4DU-\" target=\"_blank\" data-c3f=\"5e7396b9f19e7\">Difference between epidemic and a pandemic<\/a>\u00a0went into great detail on distinctions between the terms, a distinction &#8220;often blurred, even among epidemiologists:&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-31\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Epidemic<\/strong>\u00a0refers to a sudden increase in the number of cases of a disease above what is normally expected.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Outbreak<\/strong>\u00a0carries the same definition as an epidemic but is often used to describe a more limited geographic event.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pandemic<\/strong>\u00a0refers to an epidemic that has spread over several countries or continents, usually affecting a large number of people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-32\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-33\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>The article also noted the term &#8220;plague&#8221; refers &#8220;specifically to a contagious bacterial disease characterized by fever and delirium, such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellhealth.com\/how-is-bubonic-plague-spread-2860699\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">bubonic plague<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But we seem to be\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1585181525347_1382\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrE1xdV83tewoAAxhJpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBybGY3bmpvBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMyBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1585210325\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.collinsdictionary.com%2fdictionary%2fenglish%2fsplit-hairs\/RK=0\/RS=oRqlNN_ldnlTH8zoeCu7NOjgRG8-\" target=\"_blank\" data-371=\"5e7bf355944d6\">splitting hairs<\/a>\u00a0here. I didn&#8217;t check out Camus&#8217; book because it was exactly on point with the current situation. I wanted to see what <strong><em>similarities<\/em> <\/strong>there might be between the 1940s <a title=\"French Algeria\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/French_Algeria\">Algeria<\/a>\u00a0described by Camus, and America today, in March 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Written in 1947,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A2KLfSJRyXZe69kApU5pCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1584871890\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fThe_Plague\/RK=0\/RS=uDAH84hgeiTkj7DB5UdqbpsN3wI-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Plague<\/a>\u00a0describes a \u201cplague sweeping the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/French_Algeria\">French Algerian<\/a>\u00a0city of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oran\">Oran<\/a>.\u201d As noted in one recent <a href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A2KLfSJRyXZe69kAnU5pCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByMDgyYjJiBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMyBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzYw--\/RV=2\/RE=1584871890\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.sltrib.com%2fopinion%2fcommentary%2f2020%2f03%2f20%2falain-de-botton-plague%2f\/RK=0\/RS=drddUBcv.YQN2rW0JndOzTivzj8-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">review<\/a>, the novel poses a number of questions about \u201cthe nature of destiny and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Human_condition\">human condition<\/a>.\u201d The book\u2019s characters, \u201cfrom doctors to vacationers to fugitives,\u201d all show the effects of the plague. The novel thus poses a number of questions on \u201cthe nature of destiny and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Human_condition\">human condition<\/a>.\u201d The book\u2019s characters, \u201cfrom doctors to vacationers to fugitives,\u201d all show the effects of a plague on a community.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>For myself, in some ways my life is more relaxed with this new &#8220;plague on a community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/bobcat.grahamdigital.com\/image\/upload\/view?width=640&amp;height=360&amp;method=crop&amp;url=https:\/\/media.news4jax.com\/photo\/2018\/06\/06\/FSU-woman-win-NCAA-champion_1528283604933_12169404_ver1.0_640_360.jpg\" width=\"240\" height=\"135\" \/>With none of my sport-teams playing, there&#8217;s no &#8220;<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1585188513239_1288\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrE19uhDnxeDjsAMU9pCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1585217313\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fidioms.thefreedictionary.com%2fcanary%2bin%2ba%2bcoal%2bmine\/RK=0\/RS=i7GTM9rZ8Wo5hhJM0NHjAcWsPI8-\" target=\"_blank\" data-478=\"5e7c0ea1dfcb9\">canary in a coal mine<\/a>&#8221; aspect to my spiritual life now. I have no pressing need for the ongoing ritual purity and ritual sacrifice that have been such a big part of my life since 1989 or so. <em>(See\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dorscribe.com\/?p=14294\" rel=\"bookmark\">\u201cUnintended consequences\u201d \u2013 and the search for Truth<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; illustrated at right &#8211; and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dorscribe.com\/?p=15272\" rel=\"bookmark\">On my \u201cmission from God<\/a>,&#8221; from a companion blog.)\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>What remains is a series of annoying but petty minor inconveniences&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The biggest example? No more dine-in lunches, or dinners, or stopping by a local bar for a beer or two before Wednesday-night choir practice. And no more choir practice, or church on Sunday either for that matter. And pretty much every morning I <strong><em>used to<\/em><\/strong> stop by a local McDonald&#8217;s for iced coffee. I liked to sip a bit out, then put in lots more ice. <em>(From the ice machine in the dine-in area. Remember those?)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s no more of that, but I&#8217;ve adapted. I now bring cup-and-straw from the day before <em>(&#8220;saving the world, one McDonald&#8217;s straw at a time&#8221;)<\/em>, and fill it with ice from my home-freezer.\u00a0 As for dine-in, every three days a week at work now &#8211; at the <i>&#8220;<\/i>local branch of\u00a0<a class=\"find\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kab.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">Keep America Beautiful<\/a>,&#8221; still open as of this writing\u00a0&#8211; I take my to-go order to the parish hall of my church, around the corner. <em>(I&#8217;m the\u00a0<a title=\"vestryman\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/vestryman\">vestry person<\/a>\u00a0in charge of buildings, so I have a key.)<\/em>\u00a0There in the peace and quiet of the parish hall, I eat my lunch and read my hand-me-down Time magazines.<\/p>\n<p>All of which is, I suppose, a metaphor of sorts&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>But then again, even before this &#8220;new plague&#8221; hit I was pretty much a hermit, living in a rambling four-bedroom house on an isolated acre of woodland. <em>(It&#8217;s<strong> so<\/strong> isolated that I don&#8217;t have any curtains or venetian blinds on any windows. Who the heck is going to look in?)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But back to\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1584633648892_292\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ6ycwl3NedjgAVhJpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1584662449\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fThe_Plague\/RK=0\/RS=7OoVval9JII1kdZ08V4ZxSzxsU8-\" target=\"_blank\" data-dd2=\"5e739731138c0\">The Plague<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0<a title=\"Albert Camus\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Albert_Camus\">Camus<\/a>. Here&#8217;s a quote from Part 1, early in the book:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Everybody knows that <a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1585182264538_1882\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ6ys49nteAX0AbSBpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBybGY3bmpvBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMyBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1585211064\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.thefreedictionary.com%2fpestilence\/RK=0\/RS=4rbZoYcOwHGdHTE2C5CCwmWaKf4-\" target=\"_blank\" data-a51=\"5e7bf63896277\">pestilences<\/a>\u00a0have a way of recurring in the world; yet somehow we find it hard to believe in ones that crash down on our heads from a blue sky. There have been as many plagues as wars in history; yet always plagues and wars take people equally by surprise.*<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Which certainly seems true of this latest\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1585182264538_1882\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ6ys49nteAX0AbSBpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBybGY3bmpvBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMyBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1585211064\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.thefreedictionary.com%2fpestilence\/RK=0\/RS=4rbZoYcOwHGdHTE2C5CCwmWaKf4-\" target=\"_blank\" data-a51=\"5e7bf63896277\">pestilence<\/a>. It&#8217;s a good thing we don&#8217;t believe in those silly superstitions anymore. And it&#8217;s a good thing history doesn&#8217;t repeat itself. <strong><em>And<\/em><\/strong> that we can learn so much from the lessons of the past, but we&#8217;re digressing again.
