As I once wrote, in 2019, just before the COVID hit &#8220;Donald Trump was riding high, and looked a shoe-in for re-election.&#8221; As did Joe Biden, this year that started with such hope, but before the latest round of national disasters. Which raises the specter of Conservatives taking control of both houses of Congress, and clogging things up even more. Which could in turn be followed up by Donald Trump being re-elected in 2024. Which brings back those sleepless nights I wrote about in the original post, not quite a year ago. Which prompted me to edit the original post, including this first paragraph, leading in to those sleepless nights:<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>* \u00a0 * \u00a0 * \u00a0 *<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/m.media-amazon.com\/images\/I\/41iA-YWdrsL.jpg\" alt=\"The Great Democracies, 1958 (A History of the English-Speaking Peoples Book 4) by [Winston S. (Otherwise known as the &#8220;&#8216;<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1610228541674_1145\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrE1xI9I_pfjpgAv0tpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzgEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1610257341\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.breitbart.com%2fclips%2f2021%2f01%2f06%2fgop-rep-gallagher-banana-republic-crap-capitol-riots-are-the-cost-of-effort-to-object-to-electoral-college%2f\/RK=0\/RS=w8uloXU43TLbpdaqC0uPvhVdHiQ-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-1cd=\"5ffa233db6690\">Banana Republic Crap&#8217; Capitol Riots<\/a>,&#8221; according to one Republican member of Congress.) And I largely succeeded &#8211; in <a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=A2KIbNOOIvpfxrgANl5pCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1610257166\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fidioms.thefreedictionary.com%2ftake%2bthe%2blong%2bview\/RK=0\/RS=H39l9EwmeqCVMgQSj5GZeQI3Sg8-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-d1b=\"5ffa228ed6cb4\">taking the long view<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; mostly because I don&#8217;t have cable TV. And then, lo and behold, on Thursday and Friday things started looking up. Former Trump allies were saying &#8220;enough is enough,&#8221; 52 rioters had been arrested, and even some staunch Republican Senators were open to impeachment <strong><em>or<\/em> <\/strong>use of the\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrJ61t70flf1ukAyj5pCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzIEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1610236412\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fTwenty-fifth_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution\/RK=0\/RS=cmvE9ZpwjnIRrTbMD1VPRdm08DE-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-3d7=\"5ff9d17c5b8ec\">Twenty-fifth Amendment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Which brings up another point. Right now I wouldn&#8217;t want to be in Donald Trump&#8217;s shoes.<\/p>\n<p>Why? Because the metaphoric &#8220;noose&#8221; is tightening around his neck<strong><em> ever<\/em><\/strong> so slowly, but surely, in an agonizing foretaste of what&#8217;s in store once he leaves the protection of his office. (That is, I reviewed the book back in August 2019.) That post talked about the prediction in 2016 \u2013 by\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0geK.QIeFRdmFYAni1pCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1565845641\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fAllan_Lichtman\/RK=0\/RS=afIqTgPHpNDG15NcWZgnu9AUClE-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-0cb=\"5d5478095fa1a\">Professor Allan Lichtman<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 that Trump would be \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=5410\" rel=\"bookmark\">impeached\u00a0within two years<\/a>.\u201d (Note: It actually took three years, but the issue is now being raised again. Does that count?)<\/p>\n<p>One positive note?\u00a0That the reaction to Trump\u2019s presidency &#8220;can provide the foundation for an era of democratic renewal and vindicate our long experiment in self-rule.&#8221; I also noted that the number-crunching on the 2016 election showed &#8220;how\u00a0<strong><em>fragile<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Trump\u2019s hold on the public is.\u201d To which I added, &#8220;I\u2019ve been saying the best weapon against Trump is his own big mouth.&#8221; Not to mention his\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrJ6ymjKfpfdPEAYCxpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzUEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1610258979\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fHubris\/RK=0\/RS=ZESE8aJAsfewZYSvqbez0l1LpcE-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-6af=\"5ffa29a38ba51\">hubris<\/a>. (&#8220;What? You mean I can&#8217;t tell supporters to storm the Capitol, and not be held responsible?&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"author notFaded\" data-width=\"165\"><span class=\"contribution\"><span class=\"a-color-secondary\">Third, I noted something I&#8217;d written in a previous post,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=8497\">Belated 4th of July meditation<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Whether by vote in 2020 or operation of law in 2024, Trump<strong><em>\u00a0will<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>end up leaving the White House. What happens then? Aside from the cheering, the dancing in\u00a0 the streets, the fireworks and parades, a new nightmare will begin \u2013 for Donald Trump.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;And when it might be said \u2013 yet again \u2013 &#8216;<u><a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1565816435050_349\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ61RydlRdh5kAMoJpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByNXM5bzY5BGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMzBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1565845234\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fsocratic.org%2fquestions%2fwhat-did-president-ford-mean-when-he-said-that-our-long-national-nightmare-is-ov\/RK=0\/RS=FRFdVWdSdbDEAI_ubnqx9AFYuJ0-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-668=\"5d547672dbba0\">Our long national nightmare is over<\/a><\/u>.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And finally &#8211; getting back to that year-ago rough draft &#8211; I wrote that Trump wants &#8211; more than anything else &#8211; to be seen as a winner. Yet that when he leaves office there will almost certainly be an uproar of cheering, celebration, fireworks, and dancing in the streets, both in America and throughout the world. (And based on the past week, that seems even more likely, with the celebrations to come on January 20 even more raucous and heart-felt.)<\/p>\n<p>Moreover &#8211; I wrote &#8211;\u00a0that virtual certainty will gall Trump no end, in both the near future and to the end of his days. So in a sense Trump was doomed to be viewed as a &#8220;loser.&#8221;\u00a0<strong><em>Unless!\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Unless &#8211; if he was elected to a second term, and so freed from a need to pander to his wacko base &#8211; Trump were to develop a conscience and start thinking seriously about his legacy.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[W]ho knows?\u00a0 If:\u00a0 1) Trump did get re-elected in 2020, and 2) no longer had to worry about throwing raw meat at his wacko base, and 3) started seriously thinking about his legacy\u00a0<em>(or developed a conscience, or started appreciating that he\u2019s \u201ccloser to the end than to the beginning\u201d)<\/em>, he might actually evolve \u2013 as [P.T.] Barnum did \u2013 into a \u201chumane, effective and<strong><em>\u00a0ethical<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0politician.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It now looks like that last thought turned out to be a\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=A0geKI3yzflfMXQAetJpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzcEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1610235506\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wiktionary.org%2fwiki%2fpipe_dream\/RK=0\/RS=C.BE6OcIORyTSNaJO.0Dsa8pyxk-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-343=\"5ff9cdf2da70e\">pipe dream<\/a>. Mace: Trump&#8217;s legacy &#8216;wiped out&#8217; by Capitol riot<\/a>.)\u00a0A pipe dream is an unrealistic hope or fantasy. Moreover, &#8220;The phrase &#8216;pipe dream&#8217; is an allusion to the dreams experienced by smokers of opium pipes.&#8221; Or in the alternative, a\u00a0&#8220;<a title=\"plan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/plan\">plan<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"desire\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/desire\">desire<\/a>, or\u00a0<a title=\"idea\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/idea\">idea<\/a>\u00a0that will not likely\u00a0<a title=\"work\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/work\">work<\/a>; a near\u00a0<a title=\"impossibility\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/impossibility\">impossibility<\/a>.&#8221; Which is kind of like the thought that an impeachment, conviction and removal from office can all happen within the space of 10 days.
