It&#8217;s because I blog mainly to learn, <strong><em>and<\/em><\/strong> for my own satisfaction. That means I &#8220;take enough time to do the job right,&#8221; not be consistent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/the1980movieproject.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/09\/urban-cowboy.jpg?w=570\" width=\"173\" height=\"173\" \/>And I last posted here back on April 17, almost two weeks ago. So on this last day of April, 2020, I&#8217;m juggling four or five possible blog posts. Like &#8220;Memories of Lori,&#8221; based on listening today to\u00a0 the\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ7Jq5BatePWYATXJpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBybGY3bmpvBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMyBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1588295226\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fUrban_Cowboy\/RK=0\/RS=UdqRxH7zgLisUKpWJaw9pEzwdOY-\" target=\"_blank\" data-aab=\"5eab05ba64bbf\">Urban Cowboy<\/a>\u00a0soundtrack.<em> (A movie that I saw back in 1980 with a lovely young copy editor at the St. Pete Times.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Or a post on possible answers for <strong><em>really<\/em> <\/strong>stupid Facebook posts. <em>(Like my earlier\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=8770\" rel=\"bookmark\">Fighting right-wing distortions on Facebook<\/a>.)<\/em> So for this quick-response post I&#8217;ll go back to some thoughts I revisited five months ago, that have been percolating a good long while.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The topic is a favorite theme of mine &#8211; or <a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ61VYCKteFO0ADlJpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBydWNmY2MwBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwM0BHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1588295896\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fMeme\/RK=0\/RS=kb3v.lTkY48sDExtscIt82t0PeY-\" target=\"_blank\" data-613=\"5eab0858b3691\">Meme<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; that goes, &#8220;If so-and-so had been conservative, we&#8217;d all be ____!&#8221; And by the way, I take issue with today&#8217;s conservatives <strong><em>only<\/em> <\/strong>because a reporter&#8217;s job &#8211; and by extension a blogger&#8217;s &#8211; is &#8220;challenge the prevailing quacks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And today&#8217;s conservatives are definitely the &#8220;prevailing quacks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For one example, &#8220;If the Founding Fathers had been conservative, we&#8217;d all be singing &#8216;God save the Queen&#8217; at the start of our baseball games.&#8221; <em>(If we weren&#8217;t playing cricket instead.) <\/em>The idea &#8211; and the irony if not the incongruity &#8211; is that today&#8217;s conservatives act like they&#8217;re the only real Americans. The problem is that our forefathers came to this country mostly to get the hell <strong><em>away<\/em> <\/strong>from conservatives &#8211; the ones who tended to<strong><em> stay<\/em> <\/strong>back home.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In plain words, those old-time conservatives didn&#8217;t have the guts to put up with the challenges of creating a New World.\u00a0It was the Independents and Dreamers who did all that.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Then there&#8217;s this, &#8220;If Jesus had been conservative, we&#8217;d all be talking Yiddish.&#8221; <em>(&#8220;Oy vey,&#8221; to which might be added the Seinfeld meme, &#8220;Not that there&#8217;s anything wrong with that!&#8221;)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Or in the case of this post&#8217;s headline &#8211; &#8220;Thank God <strong><em>Jesus<\/em> <\/strong>wasn\u2019t a conservative&#8221; &#8211; the <a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ7J_2O6te_aUAvRBpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBzdWd2cWI5BGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxMAR2dGlkAwRzZWMDc3I-\/RV=2\/RE=1588309110\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fPunch_line\/RK=0\/RS=tjtewKJOa5..K7fm3VeM7UpLB0c-\" target=\"_blank\" data-151=\"5eab3bf6cfa82\">Punch line<\/a>\u00a0thereof would be:\u00a0 <strong><em>&#8220;Otherwise we Americans might\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">all\u00a0<\/span>be\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1533854611555_392\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0geKYmSw2xb1MQAizNpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1533883411\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fIslam\/RK=0\/RS=uNEf_OrjGS0o7oYEqDz38ZgXw9M-\" target=\"_blank\" data-543=\"5b6cc3932b6de\">Muslim<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com\/images\/I\/51G3e26cOnL._SX359_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg\" width=\"142\" height=\"197\" \/>But don&#8217;t take my word for it.\u00a0<a class=\"find\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kenneth_Clark\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">Kenneth Clark<\/a>\u00a0said that in his 1969 book\u00a0<a class=\"find\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Civilisation-Personal-View-Kenneth-Clark\/dp\/B0016XQ7LQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">Civilisation<\/a>: &#8220;Without\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1533847618408_223\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrE1xZBqGxbqEgAvI1pCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1533876418\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fCharles_Martel\/RK=0\/RS=JfipOQSw0GKe4nvbltmZy6e6Wmg-\" target=\"_blank\" data-d0d=\"5b6ca84234040\">Charles Martel<\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0victory over the Moors at\u00a0<a title=\"Battle of Tours\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Tours\">Poitiers<\/a>\u00a0in 732, <strong><em><a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1533853976878_169\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ7JMYwWxbhusAlxtpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1533882776\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fHistory_of_Western_civilization\/RK=0\/RS=pQjrlvYuDUd8lUwsJmsRudeplek-\" target=\"_blank\" data-8f5=\"5b6cc1187f858\">western civilization<\/a>\u00a0might never have existed&#8230;<\/em><\/strong>&#8221;\u00a0 And by western civilization he meant\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1533853976878_169\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ7JMYwWxbhusAlxtpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1533882776\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fHistory_of_Western_civilization\/RK=0\/RS=pQjrlvYuDUd8lUwsJmsRudeplek-\" target=\"_blank\" data-8f5=\"5b6cc1187f858\">western <strong><em>Christian<\/em> <\/strong>civilization<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Which again means that if Jesus had been conservative &#8211; as many ostensible Christians claim today &#8211; there would have been no viable force to stop the\u00a0&#8220;<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Umayyad_invasion_of_Gaul\">Islamic advance into Western Europe<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">* \u00a0 * \u00a0 * \u00a0 *<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a bit of background in the notes about how I happened on to Clark&#8217;s observation&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>But<\/em><\/strong> &#8211; to <a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0geK.jcKqteeYsAxIlpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByZnU4cmNpBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwM5BHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1588304733\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fCut_to_the_chase\/RK=0\/RS=vlbwpe7J.v1Lq9UMN3u3RKxsC1A-\" target=\"_blank\" data-0ba=\"5eab2add5470f\">cut to the chase<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; here&#8217;s the connection between\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1533847618408_223\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrE1xZBqGxbqEgAvI1pCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1533876418\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fCharles_Martel\/RK=0\/RS=JfipOQSw0GKe4nvbltmZy6e6Wmg-\" target=\"_blank\" data-d0d=\"5b6ca84234040\">Charles Martel<\/a>\u00a0and Jesus <strong><em>not<\/em> <\/strong>being conservative. The idea is that if Jesus<strong><em> had<\/em> <\/strong>been conservative, He wouldn&#8217;t have started the New Religion &#8211; the &#8220;New Testament&#8221; &#8211; that eventually bore His name. And Judaism would likely have stayed a relatively small religious movement.<em> (Without the proselytizing that is such a trademark of Christianity, it would have been confined to the fringes of the eastern Mediterranean.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In plain words, there would be nothing to stop Islam from taking over Western Europe.<\/p>\n<p>At page 17 in his first chapter, &#8220;The Skin of Our Teeth,&#8221; Clark noted how close\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ6R17DateeDYAAFxpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBydDI5cXVuBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwM2BHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1588297211\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fWestern_culture\/RK=0\/RS=HRYmVxEAYG3RA0bzYGF1IzoQCdQ-\" target=\"_blank\" data-3f5=\"5eab0d7bd1f1d\">Western civilization<\/a>\u00a0came to be snuffed out. That is, with <a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1588268643152_140\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0geJaZiDqteA9QAsHtpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1588297443\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fFall_of_the_Western_Roman_Empire\/RK=0\/RS=MCptGx5U64iKdyFgyLZWKv.yO2o-\" target=\"_blank\" data-de7=\"5eab0e63692b1\">Fall of the Roman Empire<\/a>, life in what we call the Middle<em> (or &#8220;<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1588268753161_794\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrE19TRDqte3MsA_hVpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByNXM5bzY5BGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMzBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1588297553\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fDark_Ages\/RK=0\/RS=QcmfVLH9ULpRk9mAoUpBFYz_PQQ-\" target=\"_blank\" data-900=\"5eab0ed1932d4\">Dark<\/a>&#8220;)<\/em> Ages was generally\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ6STODatemf8A9gBpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1588297295\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.phrases.org.uk%2fmeanings%2fnasty-brutish-and-short.html\/RK=0\/RS=55KG2YaSMP9rfgmlVm9dR1fsRh0-\" target=\"_blank\" data-6bb=\"5eab0dcf0816d\">nasty, brutish and short<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For one example, during those 500 years or so it was rare person indeed who could read or write. <em>(&#8220;[P]ractically no lay person, from kings and emperors downwards, could read or write.&#8221;)<\/em> And as Clark noted, it was only in the Church that reading and writing were preserved. &#8220;We survived because &#8230; for centuries practically all men of intellect joined the Church.&#8221; And it was Church scribes who preserved not only reading and writing, but also the classics of antiquity. &#8220;In so far as we are heirs of Greece and Rome, we got through by the <a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0geK.hxEKteoQgA3gNpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBydDI5cXVuBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwM2BHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1588297970\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fSkin_of_my_teeth\/RK=0\/RS=8KwwtuJsyj.ivHR3L3ZwGgbXnME-\" target=\"_blank\" data-478=\"5eab10720f093\">skin of our teeth<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Which is one reason to thank God that Jesus wasn&#8217;t conservative.<\/p>\n<p>Another reason is that if Jesus had been conservative &#8211; and Judaism stayed a small religion without Christian proselytizing &#8211; there would be no\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0geK.GDE6te1UsArwVpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1588298755\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fCharles_Martel\/RK=0\/RS=1kkWIWZrGa0M9jddLR9vY48aKxI-\" target=\"_blank\" data-1f9=\"5eab1383996a1\">Charles Martel<\/a>, the French warrior-king<em> (and &#8220;<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1588270142005_674\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0geK.Y.FKtext4AljlpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByNXQ0NThjBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwM1BHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1588298942\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.historyhit.com%2fday-charles-martel-dies%2f\/RK=0\/RS=ibh_EZsEnvTuvmkK3Jc4nh3kchM-\" target=\"_blank\" data-e34=\"5eab143ea34cb\">Hammer<\/a>&#8220;)<\/em> who\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1588270142005_1160\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0geK.Y.FKtext4AmTlpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByaWg0YW05BGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwM4BHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1588298942\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fsteelfighting.com%2f2011%2f07%2f23%2fcharles-the-hammer-martel-defender-of-christianity%2f\/RK=0\/RS=G5On8Zqy9hYMxTLNNuyeaaJ1n2M-\" target=\"_blank\" data-e34=\"5eab143ea3a2d\">saved Christian Europe<\/a>. Which started<em> (arguably)<\/em> with Charles Martel, an effective combination of ardent Christian, powerful military leader, and<strong><em> Independent.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Although Charles Martel ( d. 741)<sup>\u00a0\u00a0<\/sup>is one of the most noted heroes in Christianity when studying one of the many violent encounters between Christian and Muslim forces, Charles \u201cThe Hammer\u201d Martel was<strong> no marionette of the Church<\/strong>. He was quite an independent and practical thinker as a military leader and as a politician.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To which we could add, &#8220;Martel was an Independent, just like Moses and Jesus!&#8221; <em>(And like me, for that matter. See\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=7396\" rel=\"bookmark\">A reminder: \u201cI\u2019m an INDEPENDENT (Voter<\/a>).&#8221;)\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Which is another way of saying that after Martel&#8217;s victory at the\u00a0<a title=\"Battle of Tours\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Tours\">Battle of Tours<\/a>\u00a0(or\u00a0<a title=\"Battle of Tours\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Tours\">Poitiers<\/a>) neither the Church nor the governments of Europe gained <strong><em>complete<\/em> <\/strong>control. The result was a &#8220;dynamic tension&#8221; between the two forces, which turned out to be a blessing.<\/p>\n<p>That is,\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1533847618408_223\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrE1xZBqGxbqEgAvI1pCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1533876418\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fCharles_Martel\/RK=0\/RS=JfipOQSw0GKe4nvbltmZy6e6Wmg-\" target=\"_blank\" data-d0d=\"5b6ca84234040\">Charles Martel<\/a>\u00a0&#8220;begat&#8221;\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0geK.RxMKteU_UAHQppCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1588306162\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fCharlemagne\/RK=0\/RS=IJDA1Sx3RHAt6c2Ccv0FEjkpNdM-\" target=\"_blank\" data-05c=\"5eab307221cac\">Charlemagne<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; actually his grandson &#8211; who has been called &#8220;the father of Europe.&#8221;\u00a0<em>(He &#8220;united parts of Europe that had never been under Frankish or Roman rule.&#8221;)<\/em> Which again wouldn&#8217;t have happened without Martel&#8217;s victory at Tours.<\/p>\n<p>The point is that in the fullness of time,\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0geK.RxMKteU_UAHQppCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1588306162\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fCharlemagne\/RK=0\/RS=IJDA1Sx3RHAt6c2Ccv0FEjkpNdM-\" target=\"_blank\" data-05c=\"5eab307221cac\">Charlemagne<\/a>\u00a0traveled to Rome, where the Pope crowned him &#8220;emperor.&#8221;<em> (At a Mass on Christmas Day, 800, &#8220;when Charlemagne knelt at the altar to pray, the Pope\u00a0<a title=\"Coronation of the Holy Roman Emperor\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coronation_of_the_Holy_Roman_Emperor\">crowned<\/a>\u00a0him\u00a0Imperator Romanorum\u00a0(&#8216;Emperor of the Romans&#8217;) in\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Old Saint Peter's Basilica\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Old_Saint_Peter%27s_Basilica\">Saint Peter&#8217;s Basilica<\/a>.&#8221;)\u00a0<\/em>Charlemagne later thought that episode was a mistake, in that it gave the pope a pretext of &#8220;supremacy&#8221; over him. <em>(And future secular rulers.)<\/em>\u00a0Which led Clark to note:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But historical judgments are very tricky.\u00a0 Maybe the <strong>tension<\/strong> between the spiritual and worldly powers throughout the Middle Ages was precisely what kept European civilisation alive.
