Don&#8217;t get me wrong.\u00a0 Even though I had to retire early &#8211; &#8220;due to unforeseen circumstances&#8221; &#8211; I&#8217;m enjoying the heck out of this not-having-to-go-to-work-every-day.\u00a0 But I still want to leave something to future generations, even if it&#8217;s only some musings in a blog like this.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Your legacy is putting your stamp on the future.\u00a0 It\u2019s a way to make some meaning of your existence:\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cYes, world of the future, I was here.\u00a0 Here\u2019s my contribution, here\u2019s why I hope my life mattered.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>See <a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/nextavenue\/2013\/08\/01\/4-smart-ways-to-leave-a-legacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url noopener\">4 Smart Ways To Leave A Legacy &#8211; Forbes<\/a>, and also <a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/quotes\/tag\/legacy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url noopener\">Quotes About Legacy &#8211; Goodreads<\/a>, which included these:\u00a0 &#8220;Carve your name on hearts, not tombstones.\u00a0 A legacy is etched into the minds of others and the stories they share about you.&#8221;\u00a0 Or consider this:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Our days are numbered.\u00a0 One of the primary goals in our lives should be to prepare for our last day.\u00a0 The legacy we leave is not just in our possessions, but in the quality of our lives. Alder<\/a><\/span>, which include these: &#8220;I write because God loves stories,&#8221; and &#8220;I write because one day I will be gone, but what I believed and felt will live on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then too there are the closing lyrics to <a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lyricsfreak.com\/f\/frank+sinatra\/it+was+a+very+good+year_20056372.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url noopener\">It Was A Very Good Year<\/a>, the 1961 song first recorded by <a title=\"Bob Shane\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bob_Shane\">Bob Shane<\/a> and <a title=\"The Kingston Trio\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Kingston_Trio\">The Kingston Trio<\/a>, but later made famous &#8220;by <a title=\"Frank Sinatra\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frank_Sinatra\">Frank Sinatra<\/a>&#8216;s version in D-minor, which won the <a title=\"Grammy Award for Best Vocal Performance, Male\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grammy_Award_for_Best_Vocal_Performance,_Male\">Grammy Award for Best Vocal Performance, Male<\/a> in 1966:&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>But now the days are short, I&#8217;m in the autumn of my years<br \/>And I think of my life as vintage wine<br \/>From fine old kegs, from the brim to the dregs<br \/>It poured sweet and clear<br \/>It was a very good year\u2026<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"v_title\">See also <a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/It_Was_a_Very_Good_Year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url noopener\">It Was a Very Good Year &#8211; Wikipedia<\/a>, and for an audio-visual, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ydcUaTpiHgQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Frank Sinatra &#8211; It Was A Very Good Year (with lyrics on screen)<\/a>.\u00a0And as an aside, this July I&#8217;ll be traveling to <a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hoboken,_New_Jersey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url noopener\">Hoboken, New Jersey<\/a>. It&#8217;ll mostly be a home-base for <a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/day+trip\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url noopener\">day trips<\/a> to the <a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Big_Apple\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url noopener\">Big Apple<\/a>. But Hoboken is also home to the <a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/hoboken411.com\/archives\/1161\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url noopener\">Sinatra Museum<\/a>, at 417 Monroe Street, and well worth a visit by itself.<\/p>\n<p>But getting back to those closing lyrics&#8230;\u00a0\u00a0 Note that in 1966 &#8211; when he won the Grammy for <em>Good Year<\/em> &#8211; Frank was only 51 years old.\u00a0 (<em>A mere <a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/pup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url noopener\">pup<\/a> by present-day <a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baby_boomers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url noopener\">Baby boomer<\/a> standards.<\/em>)\u00a0 So his saying both that his &#8220;days are short&#8221; and that he was &#8211; in 1966 &#8211; &#8220;in the autumn of my years&#8221; has turned out to be a huge <a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anachronism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url noopener\">anachronism<\/a>, 49 years later.<\/p>\n<p>To make a long story short, for us in the 64-YOA-and-up range, a better musical <em><a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/allegory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url noopener\">allegory<\/a> <\/em>might be <a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Best_Is_Yet_to_Come\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url noopener\">The Best Is Yet to Come<\/a>.\u00a0 As <a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Best_Is_Yet_to_Come\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url noopener\">Wikipedia<\/a> noted, this was &#8220;the last song Sinatra sang in public, on February 25, 1995, and the words &#8216;<em>The Best is Yet to Come<\/em>&#8216;&#8221; are etched on his tombstone.\u00a0 (<em>Which opens up a whole &#8216;nuther metaphoric <a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Can_of_worms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url noopener\">can of worms<\/a>:<\/em>)<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>But we digress&#8230;<\/em><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/b\/b4\/Vincent_Willem_van_Gogh_128.jpg\/110px-Vincent_Willem_van_Gogh_128.jpg\" alt=\"A vase on a table with about a dozen flowers of varying shades of yellow, tan and beige; a few at the top have darker centers and one on the left is green\" width=\"110\" height=\"138\" data-file-width=\"2024\" data-file-height=\"2531\" \/>Getting back to the theme of this <a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Column_%28periodical%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url noopener\">column<\/a>:\u00a0 That theme is &#8220;on leaving a legacy,&#8221; exemplified by Frank Sinatra and &#8211; in an earlier age &#8211; Vincent Van Gogh.\u00a0 (Of whom more below.)\u00a0 In my case, the legacy I&#8217;m working on includes these blog-musings, and also my art; paintings in the oil and &#8211; more recently &#8211; acrylic <em><a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/genre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url noopener\">genres<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 (Of which more below.)<\/p>\n<p>That legacy also includes things like <a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/idioms.thefreedictionary.com\/push+the+envelope\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url noopener\">pushing the envelope<\/a> when it comes to the physical adventures still available to me, before I get <strong><em>too<\/em><\/strong> old and decrepity.\u00a0 Adventures like last November&#8217;s eight-day primitive-camping canoe trip 12 miles off the coast of Mississippi.\u00a0 (See <a href=\"http:\/\/dorscribe.com\/?p=5259\" rel=\"bookmark\">On achieving closure<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/dorscribe.com\/?p=5415\" rel=\"bookmark\">\u201cI pity the fool!\u201d<\/a>)\u00a0 And like hiking the Appalachian Trail, though in segments and not &#8220;the whole dang thing.&#8221;\u00a0 (Of which more later this spring.)<\/p>\n<p>Which brings up how John Steinbeck approached <em>his<\/em> &#8220;getting up in years.&#8221;\u00a0 In Part Two of <em>Travels with Charley<\/em>, he noted men his age who \u2013 told to <em>slow down<\/em> \u2013\u00a0 \u201cpack their lives in cotton wool, smother their impulses, hood their passions, and gradually retire from their manhood.\u201d\u00a0 (Men who \u201ctrade their violence for a small increase in life span.\u201d)\u00a0\u00a0 But that wasn\u2019t his way:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>I did not want to surrender fierceness for a small gain in yardage\u2026\u00a0 If this projected journey should prove too much then it was time to go anyway.\u00a0 I see too many men delay their exits with a sickly, slow reluctance to leave the stage.\u00a0 <strong>It\u2019s bad theater as well as bad living<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>On the other hand I <em>do<\/em> want to make sure I stick around as long as I can, for reasons including the <em>art legacy<\/em> that I&#8217;ve only recently started getting <a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/idioms.thefreedictionary.com\/up+to+speed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url noopener\">up to speed<\/a> on.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve always wanted to paint, but only since retiring have I had the time to figure out the best <a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/www.artsreformation.com\/a001\/ks-expression.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url noopener\">artistic expression<\/a> for me, &#8220;painting-<a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/www.onestopenglish.com\/community\/your-english\/word-grammar\/your-english-word-grammar-wise\/550157.article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url noopener\">wise<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0 One thing I&#8217;ve learned is that &#8211; in a way &#8211; painting is like raising a kid.\u00a0 You <em>start out<\/em> exercising near-total control, but &#8211; if you&#8217;ve done your job right &#8211; in the fullness of time the painting develops a life and character all it&#8217;s own.\u00a0 Eventually you exercise less and less control, and instead watch it &#8220;blossom&#8221; before your eyes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hac\"><em>But again we digress&#8230;\u00a0 <\/em>I&#8217;ve always admired Vincent van Gogh and his unique <em><strong>style<\/strong><\/em>, which you can spot almost-literally <em><a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/idioms.thefreedictionary.com\/a+mile+away\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url noopener\">a mile away<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 And perhaps someday &#8211; if I do the job right in the time I have left &#8211; I too can leave behind an artistic legacy like his.\u00a0 (<em>Though I wouldn&#8217;t mind making a few <a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/shekel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url noopener\">shekels<\/a> for myself in the process.<\/em>)\u00a0 Which brings up the fact that <a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vincent_van_Gogh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url noopener\">Van Gogh<\/a> left a huge legacy &#8211;
