It will be the fourth of three hikes on the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=A0geKaPCPwBjhsoA6DNpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1660989507\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fCamino_de_Santiago\/RK=0\/RS=dZOlRIVXPyG7ljVMOmjuGNMqMqY-\" target=\"_blank\">Camino de Santiago<\/a>. The three earlier ones came in Spain, Portugal and a short section in France. <em>(For details type &#8220;camino&#8221; or &#8220;paris&#8221; in the search box above right.)<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this upcoming September adventure three of us &#8211; me, my brother Tom and his wife Carol \u2013 will hike the 154 miles from&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrEzezxJVZifZAABgRpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1649841777\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fAssisi\/RK=0\/RS=2IPsmP.8501oZlvLILcZ6chQnbc-\" target=\"_blank\">Assisi<\/a> to Rome. Specifically, we&#8217;ll be hiking from&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrEzezxJVZifZAABgRpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1649841777\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fAssisi\/RK=0\/RS=2IPsmP.8501oZlvLILcZ6chQnbc-\" target=\"_blank\">Assisi<\/a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=A0geKeVtljJiDJ0APzBpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1647511278\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fSt._Peter%2527s_Basilica\/RK=0\/RS=D9zfEu_sq0zkU0sMcRNUvNu70rg-\" target=\"_blank\">St. Peter\u2019s Basilica<\/a>&nbsp;in Rome.<em> (In Italian it&#8217;s the&nbsp;<em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrJ6yoGlTJiNuMA6vJpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzYEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1647510919\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.viadifrancesco.it%2fen%2f\/RK=0\/RS=nnheLp0opmFDRtDLWCDr3zu9FvU-\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Via de Francesco<\/strong><\/a><\/em>.) <\/em>The April post noted that because of its \u201cchallenging topography, the Way of St. Francis is a challenging walk.\u201d The first few days are &#8211; it has been said &#8211; as challenging as a &#8220;walk over the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=A2KIbMm.BGphqL4AExZpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzIEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1634366783\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fcaminoways.com%2froute-napoleon-valcarlos\/RK=0\/RS=hoaFa5fejOmRuZpuxlZovaBzybQ-\" target=\"_blank\">Route [de] Napole\u00f3n<\/a>&nbsp;that crosses the Pyrenees. A daily climb of 500 to 1000 meters is not unusual.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which is a hike we did back in September 2021. <em>(See <a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=11369\">Hiking over the Pyrenees, in 2021 \u2013 finally<\/a>!)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The April post noted that in preparing for the hike, I first had to find an affordable flight to Rome, then figure the best way to get to Assisi <strong><em>from<\/em><\/strong> Rome. At the time I thought the best way to Assisi was by bus, leaving Rome at 8:30 in the morning. But since then I found the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=A2KLfSiu_wBjlbYAvCBpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzIEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1661038639\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.trenitalia.com%2fen.html\/RK=0\/RS=wSv00TyR84ONTcvLJfNgGZeiVyo-\" target=\"_blank\">Trenitalia<\/a> website, and got a later train &#8211; leaving Rome at noon &#8211; to Assisi. And the place we&#8217;ll be staying in Assisi is a short walk from the station<em>. (Whereas it&#8217;s a two-mile hike from the Assisi bus station.) <\/em>And I got an affordable flight to Rome and back, mostly because I could pay for it in installments. <em>(Thanks to my American Express &#8211; Delta &#8211; Sky Miles credit card.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile I&#8217;ve been making plans for my first day or two in Rome. Once settled in my B&amp;B by Roma Termini station, I hope to visit a place called &#8220;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrE1.C8DgFjP1YAx0NpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1661042492\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.tripadvisor.com%2fRestaurant_Review-g187791-d6687005-Reviews-Let_It_Beer-Rome_Lazio.html\/RK=0\/RS=Xm2DWCHbyuAsFU8wXYXBfo7iN5Y-\" target=\"_blank\">LET IT BEER,<\/a>&#8221; about two miles northeast<em>. (I just like the name.) <\/em>Later, or maybe the next day (<em>Monday, August 29)<\/em> I figure on hiking down to the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=A0geJabdBgFj1QEAMhRpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzIEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1661040478\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fit.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fIsola_Tiberina\/RK=0\/RS=f0_6NFqDkw8n.rKMI1dn6LVJvcg-\" target=\"_blank\">Isola Tiberina<\/a>. <em>(Tiber Island.)<\/em> That&#8217;s an island in the middle of the Tiber River, kind of like the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrE1xrtAQFjA2AAvk5pCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1661039214\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2f%25C3%258Ele_de_la_Cit%25C3%25A9\/RK=0\/RS=1ZAqWDpHmG7bQkFy2S8ONK5QCio-\" target=\"_blank\">\u00cele de la Cit\u00e9<\/a> in Paris. <em>(Which we visited last September. We got our required COVID shots at a tent set-up by the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=A2KIbMtDAgFjTrcADqRpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1661039300\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fPont_Neuf\/RK=0\/RS=X09VJPCljkJd6la5M6SkkT4NU.w-\" target=\"_blank\">Pont Neuf<\/a>. We had to get them to take a train down to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=A0geK.CAAgFjjaYA7CFpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1661039360\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fSaint-Jean-Pied-de-Port\/RK=0\/RS=E0_U.lSDi.a5Tq7mSIgJJa0G2aY-\" target=\"_blank\">Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port<\/a><\/em>.<em>) <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, based on a recent video I saw on Rome, I may try a fried artichoke in the Jewish Ghetto. <em>(Highly recommended, for the adventurous anyway.)<\/em> Google Maps shows &#8220;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrE1xdWDwFjQpAANRlpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1661042647\/RO=10\/RU=http%3a%2f%2fwww.latavernadelghetto.com%2f%3flang%3den\/RK=0\/RS=.N8yDFmL3FvLqU3x3z_ik5vKzDs-\" target=\"_blank\">La Taverna del Ghetto<\/a>&#8221; that may have it. &#8220;La Taverna&#8221; is a mile and a half southwest of my B&amp;B, and Tiber Island is just beyond it. The Colosseum and Palatine Hill are pretty much on the way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;ll see how those plans work out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also this past week, I got 250 Euros from my local bank. Last Tuesday I did a four hour hike &#8211; figuring six miles at 24 minutes a mile actual hiking time &#8211; at a local Nature Center. <em>(We&#8221;Il average ten miles a day.) <\/em>I carried 17.4 pounds* including a pack and camp chair for an occasional break in the woods, without getting chiggers. <em>(Always a problem in the Southeastern woodlands.) <\/em>I covered up pretty good but still got a couple bites, one on my right tricep that still itches. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Next<\/em><\/strong> Tuesday I hope to get in a 7-mile hike along some local golf cart paths, with a full pack but no camp chair. And I plan to take a break for lunch, at a local sports bar, with a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrE19F8BAFj5roAT9BpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1661039868\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.merriam-webster.com%2fdictionary%2fprophylactic\/RK=0\/RS=0XBkbGWKTwbYq66Q0Qc_PXTI8FY-\" target=\"_blank\">prophylactic<\/a> beer, just to get into the Camino rhythm. And by the way, I have a hard and fast rule for those Camino hikes: I <em><strong>never<\/strong><\/em> have a lunch-beer before noon. <em>(Well, &#8220;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=A2KLfSP8BAFjfnYACHZpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1661039997\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.enotes.com%2ftopics%2fh-ms-pinafore%2fquotes%2fwhat-never-hardly-ever\/RK=0\/RS=7xNKSOMAbo3IncWX1fLFuiMUoTk-\" target=\"_blank\">Hardly Ever<\/a>!&#8221;)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally &#8211; and BTW &#8211; I&#8217;ll have 48 hours in Rome before heading up to Assisi.<em> (Between getting settled in my B&amp;B and taking the train.) <\/em>But once we finish the hike we&#8217;ll have three<em><strong> full <\/strong><\/em>days for touristy stuff in the Vatican City area.
