Part III"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img src=\"http:\/\/s3-media3.fl.yelpcdn.com\/bphoto\/B6VQXspULOiHylpwAA2FPA\/l.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Atlantic City, seen at dusk from the balcony of the\u00a0<a class=\"find\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atlanticcitynj.com\/partnerinformation\/membership-directory-search-details.aspx?id=17304\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">Wyndham Skyline Tower<\/a><\/em>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This post continues <a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=931\">Mid-summer Travelog<\/a> (Part I), and <a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=1026\">Travelog \u2013 Part II<\/a>. \u00a0Of course now that it&#8217;s October 2 &#8211; a full 10 weeks after that road trip ended &#8211; this third-of-four installments will be more of a\u00a0<a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/remembrance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">remembrance<\/a>.\u00a0 And among other things, I&#8217;ve taken <em>another<\/em> trip since then.<\/p>\n<p>In August I took a trip out west, to Utah, and from there to &#8220;the <a class=\"find\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Columbia_River\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">Columbia River<\/a>, near <a class=\"find\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Astoria,_Oregon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">Astoria<\/a>,\u00a0on unfinished\u00a0<a class=\"find\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canoe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">canoe<\/a>-trip business.&#8221;\u00a0 (See\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=1348\">Ashley Wilkes<\/a>.) \u00a0<em>That<\/em> trip took nearly three weeks, from August 10 to the 27.\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/b\/b9\/1882RutgersFootballTeam.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"167\" height=\"109\" \/>In the meantime <a class=\"find\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2015_NFL_season\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">football season<\/a> is once again upon us. \u00a0Which means it&#8217;s been a busy time for me.<\/p>\n<p>And it&#8217;s also a\u00a0good\u00a0time for reflection.<\/p>\n<p>But before we continue the <a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/www.yourdictionary.com\/travelogue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">travelog<\/a> itself, I should remember that these <em>shouldn&#8217;t<\/em> be just the boring ramblings of an aging Geezer.\u00a0 That&#8217;s because:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The journey motif, where a story\u2019s protagonist must complete a quest &#8230; is one of the oldest in storytelling.\u00a0 Usually, there is a prize or reward promised, but often the <strong>true<\/strong> reward is different and more valuable, as the protagonist both proves and humbles himself.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>See <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ask.com\/education\/journey-motif-f9295b102eb0541e\">What is a journey motif<\/a>?\u00a0 (<em>Emphasis added.<\/em>)\u00a0 So I&#8217;ll try to keep that in mind&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, in <a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=1026\">Part II<\/a>\u00a0I noted Steinbeck&#8217;s comment: &#8220;when I used to work in the woods it was said of lumber men that they did their logging\u00a0in the whorehouse and their sex in the woods.&#8221; \u00a0 Then I added my own twist: \u00a0&#8220;Which is another way of saying that it\u2019s only now that my trip is over that I can look back and relish the memories just lived through.&#8221; \u00a0That was back on July 22, which means this Part III will be <em>doubly<\/em> reflective.<\/p>\n<p>We resume this installment in Atlantic City. \u00a0And as shown in the upper image, from the top floor of the\u00a0<a class=\"find\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atlanticcitynj.com\/partnerinformation\/membership-directory-search-details.aspx?id=17304\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">Wyndham Skyline Tower<\/a>. \u00a0 That was one of the most <strong><em>pleasant<\/em><\/strong> surprises of the trip.\u00a0 (I&#8217;d thought my brother&#8217;s \u00a0saying &#8220;we rented a condo&#8221; would mean a quaint little three- or four-bedroom house, somewhere near the beach.)\u00a0 Being able to look out on &#8220;AC&#8221; from a 32d-floor balcony &#8211; at dawn and dusk &#8211; was refreshing indeed.<\/p>\n<p>The installment will end &#8211; perhaps\u00a0metaphorically &#8211; at (or near) &#8220;<a class=\"find\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trinity_Church_%28Swedesboro,_New_Jersey%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">Old Swedes<\/a>&#8221; Episcopal cemetery in Swedesboro, New Jersey. \u00a0That&#8217;s where where we surviving three brothers &#8211; along with a niece and matriarchal aunt &#8211; laid our father&#8217;s ashes to rest.<\/p>\n<p>(As noted in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=931\">Part I<\/a>, that memorial lent &#8220;a certain <em><a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/gravitas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">gravitas<\/a><\/em> to the whole &#8216;joint venture.'&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/thumb\/4\/42\/Travels-with-charley-cover.jpg\/200px-Travels-with-charley-cover.jpg\" alt=\"1962 first edition cover\" width=\"124\" height=\"195\" \/>Also in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=931\">Part I<\/a>, I told of trying to fashion my road trip in the manner of Steinbeck\u2019s <a class=\"find\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Travels_with_Charley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">Travels with Charley<\/a>. \u00a0Which meant &#8211; first of all -noting\u00a0some key differences between highway travel in 1960 and 2015. \u00a0(Differences including but not limited to <a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/cruise%20control\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">cruise control<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>I noted another difference, on camping<strong><em> not<\/em><\/strong> being a cheaper way to travel.\u00a0 That is, before leaving I decided not to camp as Steinbeck did.\u00a0 That was because even for <em>tent<\/em> camping, the price you pay is almost as much as a Motel 6. \u00a0But since then I&#8217;ve learned that&#8217;s not entirely correct.<\/p>\n<p>It <strong><em>is<\/em><\/strong> true that camping at a state park these days &#8211; even with online reservations &#8211; can cost almost as much a night at a Motel 6. \u00a0But after the trip I found a website,\u00a0<a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/freecampsites.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">Freecampsites.net<\/a>. (See also\u00a0<a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/freecampgrounds.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">FreeCampgrounds.com<\/a>.) \u00a0I haven&#8217;t actually tried one of these yet, but it does bode well for the future. \u00a0(<em>And I suppose there&#8217;s some kind of\u00a0<a class=\"find\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Object_lesson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">object lesson<\/a> in all this&#8230;<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p class=\"durl find\">That brings up another key difference between Steinbeck&#8217;s time and ours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"durl find\">On page 167 of the Penguin Edition <strong><em>TWC<\/em><\/strong>, Steinbeck wrote of driving across the \u201cupraised thumb of Idaho and through real mountains that climbed straight up.&#8221;\u00a0 There he had a problem: &#8220;my radio went dead and I thought it was broken, but it was only that the high ridges cut off the radio waves.\u201d \u00a0The point? \u00a0Steinbeck had <em>only<\/em>\u00a0a car radio to entertain him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"durl find\">I on the other hand had radio, <strong><em>and<\/em><\/strong> a CD player that could &#8211; and did &#8211; provide an education via <a class=\"find\" href=\"https:\/\/sites.la.utexas.edu\/lecturecapture\/professors\/what-is-lecture-capture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">lectures on CD<\/a>. \u00a0\u00a0(Like <a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=1140\">American History, \u201cpatched and piebald<\/a>,&#8221; as seen below left.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/3\/31\/Southern_Chivalry.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"173\" height=\"113\" \/>Or I could listen to plain old CDs with music.\u00a0 (I had around 50 such CDs.)\u00a0 Or I could listen to pre-programmed music on my <a class=\"find\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IPod_Shuffle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">iPod Shuffle<\/a>.\u00a0 (Which had some eight hours of music.)<\/p>\n<p>And last but not least, I had a six-month trial of <a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/www.siriusxm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">SiriusXM (satellite) Radio<\/a>. That trial came with the new Ford Escape I&#8217;d bought the previous May. \u00a0It alone had over 175 channels, with comedy, sports, news and information, &#8220;commercial-free music,&#8221; and traffic and weather.<\/p>\n<p>Which I suppose is as good a metaphor as any for the <a class=\"find\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Information_explosion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">Information Explosion<\/a>\u00a0that now envelopes us today. \u00a0(And which &#8220;can lead to <a title=\"Information overload\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Information_overload\">information overload<\/a>;&#8221; that is, a difficulty in <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Decision making\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Decision_making\">making decisions<\/a>\u00a0and understanding issues,\u00a0caused by <em>too much<\/em> information.)<\/p>\n<p>But before writing more about Atlantic City, I wanted to note another similarity.<\/p>\n<p>On pages 136-37 of the Penguin Books <a class=\"find\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Travels_with_Charley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">TWC<\/a>, Steinbeck wrote about rarely making notes along the way. \u00a0But (he added), \u201cI made some notes on a sheet of yellow paper on the nature and quality of being alone.\u201d\u00a0 Such notes &#8211; he said &#8211; would normally have gotten lost, \u201cas notes are always lost, but these particular notes turned up long afterward wrapped around a bottle of ketchup and secured by a rubber band.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He found three notes altogether \u2013 all on being alone \u2013 with one lying \u201cobscurely under a streak of ketchup.\u201c\u00a0 He took over a full page of <em>TWC<\/em> on the third note, \u201cReversion to pleasure-pain basis.\u201d\u00a0 He then concluded, \u201cso much for the three notes below the red stain on the ketchup bottle.\u201d\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"photo-box-img alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/s3-media4.fl.yelpcdn.com\/bphoto\/x2sHsyPWXOzYqQMOXlrKVQ\/ls.jpg\" alt=\"Public Chicago Hotel - Chicago, IL, United States\" width=\"138\" height=\"138\" \/>All of which had to do with the fact that\u00a0 \u201cAfter the comfort and the company of Chicago I had had to learn to be alone again.\u201d\u00a0 (His wife flew out to meet him in Chicago, and for a few days they stayed at the &#8220;<a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz\/public-chicago-chicago\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">Ambassador East<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0 The lobby is seen at right.)<\/p>\n<p>Along the same lines, I recently found a note<strong><em>\u00a0I&#8217;d<\/em><\/strong> written during my road trip.\u00a0 It was from Sunday, June 28, written on an odd scrap of paper in the Walmart parking lot on Virginia Beach Boulevard.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Road trip &#8211; Sometimes you&#8217;re amazed at how well things turn out like you &#8220;planned.&#8221;\u00a0 (Appearance of Walmart this morning.) \u00a0And sometimes you have to adapt &#8211; Saturday driving up I-95 through rain and traffic.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That all had to do with how &#8220;fouled up&#8221; the driving had been on Saturday, the 27th.\u00a0 Not only was the traffic on Interstate 95 even worse than usual&#8230;\u00a0 Aside from that, a strong and long line of thunderstorms took it&#8217;s sweet time, taking all day Saturday to pass through the area.<\/p>\n<p>(And knocking out the power for five hours in Williamsburg.\u00a0 See\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=1026\">Part II<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>But then on Sunday morning the sun was out, and driving was fun again.\u00a0 The only problem was that I needed cash for the toll onto the Chesapeake Bay-Bridge.\u00a0 I pondered the question while driving east toward Virginia Beach.\u00a0 I wanted to visit the beach itself, and also looked for <a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dcr.virginia.gov\/state-parks\/first-landing.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">First Landing State Park<\/a>, when all of a sudden &#8211; &#8220;as if by magic&#8221; &#8211; a Walmart appeared to my left.\u00a0 (<em>That&#8217;s my normal routine when needing cash.\u00a0 Rather than pay an ATM fee, I generally go to a Walmart, get some inexpensive necessity and get cash that way.<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>All of which could be just another way of saying, &#8220;<a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/www.phrases.org.uk\/bulletin_board\/59\/messages\/339.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">Sometimes you get the bear, and sometimes the bear gets you<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0 Or as Steinbeck said, &#8220;we do not take a trip; a trip takes us.&#8221;\u00a0 (TWC-2, 4)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.atmnetwork.net\/_images\/landing\/Argo7.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"65\" height=\"164\" border=\"0px\" \/>And by the way, I&#8217;m pretty sure they didn&#8217;t have <a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/ATM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">ATM<\/a>s in 1960.<\/p>\n<p>Then too, that &#8220;magical moment in travel&#8221; was pretty much what happened when &#8211; later in the week &#8211; the three parts of the family got together for the memorial in Swedesboro.\u00a0 We all came together &#8220;as if by magic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime I just checked the word counter. \u00a0It said the last paragraph put me at 1,344 words.\u00a0 <em>That<\/em> means it&#8217;s time to start wrapping this up.<\/p>\n<p>So here&#8217;s a condensed version of journal entries for this trip-part.\u00a0 For readers more interested &#8211; or more <a class=\"find\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/masochist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">masochistic<\/a>&#8211; there&#8217;s a longer version at the end of the notes.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday evening, June 29, I treated my hosts to dinner at the Hard Rock Caf\u00e9 down on the Boardwalk.\u00a0 (&#8220;I made believe I lost my credit card.\u00a0 Hah!\u00a0 Fooled everyone.&#8221;)\u00a0 Then at another restaurant a day or so later, I walked off and left my cell phone.\u00a0 I got it back, but it reminded me of something a fellow old-person once said:\u00a0 &#8220;<strong><em>I&#8217;m not senile, I&#8217;m processing<\/em><\/strong>!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Which probably qualifies as the travel writer &#8220;humbling himself.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t recall Steinbeck writing of such problems in his journey.\u00a0 But see also <a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutcharley.com\/travels-with-charley-timeline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">A \u201cTravels With Charley\u201d Timeline<\/a>, which noted &#8220;screaming signs of fictionalization,&#8221; Steinbeck&#8217;s being &#8220;fuzzy about time and place,&#8221; not to mention vague and confusing:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The book also includes scenes of several lonely overnight campouts under the stars that didn\u2019t happen and it omits many things Steinbeck did with his wife Elaine when she joined him for a month on the West Coast.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But hey, nobody&#8217;s perfect.\u00a0<em> (See also &#8220;<a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oxforddictionaries.com\/us\/definition\/american_english\/pup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">young pup &#8211; definition &#8230; from the Oxford dictionary<\/a>.&#8221;)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"spotlight alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.net\/hphotos-xpf1\/v\/t1.0-9\/12038424_1241528755872639_5972225884429355981_n.jpg?oh=2a69e838bd26ab00452befc2b994dabc&amp;oe=56A38A1B\" alt=\"\" width=\"159\" height=\"159\" \/>One definite highlight of the stay in Atlantic City was a visit to the <a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tuckertonseaport.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">Tuckerton Seaport &amp; Baymen&#8217;s Museum<\/a> (seen at right):<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Only six bucks and a great bargain at that, even though many of the exhibits were still closed, due to <a class=\"find\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hurricane_Sandy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">Superstorm Sandy<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0 And among other things, I learned about the <a class=\"find\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Chestnut_Neck\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">Battle of Chestnut Neck<\/a>, which I&#8217;d never heard of.\u00a0 (In the Revolutionary War.)<\/p>\n<p>See also <a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/matadornetwork.com\/bnt\/50-most-inspiring-travel-quotes-of-all-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">Travel broadens the mind<\/a>, with 50 inspiring quotes, including one from Steinbeck: \u201cA journey is like marriage.\u00a0 The certain way to be wrong is to think you control it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On that note, we also did a lot of walking along the Boardwalk over several days in AC, marked by &#8220;stopping and starting, shopping, and watching the &#8216;passing panoply.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But getting back to that <a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gradesaver.com\/the-road\/essays\/the-journey-motif-in-works-of-american-literature\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">Journey Motif<\/a>, &#8220;leading to an epiphany, or some sort of self-realization.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We left Atlantic city on Thursday, July 2, heading for the Swedesboro cemetery.\u00a0 I followed my even-more-delightfully-retro brother, who refuses to use anything like a GPS.\u00a0 West on U.S. 322, not wanting to pay a toll or go through the traffic on the <a class=\"find\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atlantic_City_Expressway\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">Atlantic City Expressway<\/a>.\u00a0 There were a number of stops and starts, not to mention turnarounds and dead ends, and we were supposed to meet up with the rest of the family at noon.<\/p>\n<p>I was starting to have my doubts, but we ended up getting &#8220;to the cemetery right at 12:04, just behind the Prius;&#8221; i.e., the one \u00a0carrying the oldest brother, his wife and matriarchal aunt, &#8220;just getting out of the car.&#8221;\u00a0 It reminded me of Steinbeck&#8217;s finding a friend&#8217;s house on <a class=\"find\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Deer_Isle,_Maine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">Deer Isle<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I climbed a hill and turned right into pine woods and on a smaller road, and turned right on a very narrow road and turned right again on wheel tracks on pine needles.\u00a0 It is so easy once you have done it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rodesfireside.com\/uploads\/1\/5\/8\/2\/15821956\/1363228382.jpg\" alt=\"Picture\" width=\"175\" height=\"93\" \/>(TWC-2, 46)\u00a0 As I wrote in my journal, &#8220;We laid Dad\u2019s ashes to rest where the nice guy had dug a huge hole.\u00a0 Each of us said a little something, then we had a nice lunch at a &#8216;Fireside&#8217; restaurant in Swedesboro.&#8221;\u00a0 (<em><a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rodesfireside.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">Rode&#8217;s Fireside Restaurant<\/a><\/em>, at left.)<\/p>\n<p>Then we drove across the Delaware Memorial Bridge to our aunt&#8217;s house in Wilmington.<\/p>\n<p>Which brings up the matter of my crossing the Delaware River in my kayak the next morning.\u00a0 It seems that crossing the Delaware is <em>why<\/em> there are two &#8220;Old Swedes&#8221; or being under indictment.) \u00a0Be that as it may, I myself paddled across\u00a0the Delaware\u00a0in a little 8-foot kayak, early the next morning and <em>notwithstanding the danger!<\/em>\u00a0 (As noted in Parts I and II.)\u00a0 It took almost exactly an hour, from <a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ecodelaware.com\/place.php?id=402\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">Battery Park<\/a> in New Castle, across the river to <a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pvhistorical.njcool.net\/rvbp.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">Riverview Beach Park<\/a> in Pennsville.\u00a0 But aside from a couple of <a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/humongous\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">humongous<\/a> freighters on the river &#8211;
