I\u2019ve tried working on the problem, but without success. Except for the undeveloped lot&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">* \u00a0 * \u00a0 * \u00a0 *<\/p>\n<p>Two weeks ago I drove &#8220;back&#8221; down to Florida&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, &#8220;back&#8221; down to the Kissimmee-Poinciana area. My &#8220;brother from Utah&#8221; &#8211; who now lives in Massachusetts* &#8211; went down to check out some investment property. <strong><em>So<\/em><\/strong>, he and his lovely wife rented a condo for a week, and they invited me\u00a0to come down and join them for a visit. (Along with my brother from Peachtree City and <strong><em>his<\/em> <\/strong>lovely wife.)<\/p>\n<p>The thing is, I <strong><em>lived<\/em> <\/strong>in Florida for 54 of my soon-to-be 70 years.* And didn&#8217;t realize how much I would\u00a0<strong><em>not<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>miss living there until I finally left. (With &#8220;strong urging&#8221; from my ex-wife.) Which means I got a chance to &#8220;re-live the Florida lifestyle.&#8221; And for me, four days was enough.<\/p>\n<p>Which brings up\u00a0<em><strong><a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1618764999196_1293\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=A0geKaDGZHxgQcEAlJ9pCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzYEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1618793799\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwritingexplained.org%2fidiom-dictionary%2fcheek-by-jowl\/RK=0\/RS=vajNQ6PpRzW6ijEUrJNBxdvVW9E-\" target=\"_blank\" data-9c0=\"607c64c732460\">cheek by jowl<\/a><\/strong><\/em>&#8230; That refers to the property my brother and sister-in-law inspected on Wednesday morning, April 14. They&#8217;d made a tentative offer* on the place and wanted to check it out. (I was scheduled to leave for home\u00a0that very day, after lunch, having arrived the previous Sunday evening, as described below.)<\/p>\n<p>The four days&#8217; experience gave me a strong sense of &#8220;<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1618798299123_234\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=A0geKLvZ5nxgG14Azs1pCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1618827098\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.today.com%2fnews%2fits-deja-vu-all-over-again-27-yogi-berras-most-t45781\/RK=0\/RS=a1o4O3dsJCdqEnWG_tsuQ3IzIB4-\" target=\"_blank\" data-986=\"607ce6da37a1b\">deja vu all over again<\/a>.&#8221; To ee what I mean, go to\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1618798861917_273\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrJ6SQM6Xxgk3gA7W5pCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1618827661\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fmaps.google.com%2f\/RK=0\/RS=BLLXHbOpKl98UzLUbFjkp5WyPpU-\" target=\"_blank\" data-c58=\"607ce90d2611a\">Google Maps<\/a>\u00a0and put in &#8220;poinciana fl Secure Connections.&#8221; That&#8217;s a security business in the area, and if you focus a bit you can see what I mean by &#8220;cheek by jowl.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That is, you&#8217;ll notice the streets in that area of Poinciana all have &#8220;themes.&#8221; In this case, lots of bird names like Hawk, Pelican and Parrot. You&#8217;ll also notice there are very few undeveloped lots in the area. The one shown above left is an\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrJ61wL63xg2PIAHKxpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzIEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1618828171\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.dictionary.com%2fbrowse%2fanomaly\/RK=0\/RS=eNsMRWw7P9uHJ5_Yhkj4NO1_Udg-\" target=\"_blank\" data-6db=\"607ceb0b7f2b6\">anomaly<\/a>.<strong><em> For the time being anyway&#8230;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Then you can go to &#8220;RJ Automotive Repair Shop,&#8221; at 12201 Seminole Boulevard, in Largo, Florida. That&#8217;s the area I grew up in &#8211; and lived in &#8211; those 51 of almost-70 years.* You&#8217;ll see the same &#8220;cheek by jowl&#8221; set of ticky-tacky houses all jammed together. (On the other hand, when we first moved down there in 1956, the area was mostly\u00a0orange and grapefruit groves. That is, the area north of 12210 106th Street, and from what is now 105th Street down to that big lake; Lake Seminole.) For that matter, each house lot in the block &#8211; back in 1956 &#8211; had three grapefruit trees in the front yard and another three in the back&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>But we&#8217;re digressing here.<\/em> <\/strong>The point is that by the time I <strong><em>left<\/em><\/strong> Pinellas County, in late 2009, the area was a nightmare of traffic, not to mention the crowded living and &#8220;hot muggy weather.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But I&#8217;m not alone in feeling that way.\u00a0See for example,\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1618764735642_305\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrEzeu.Y3xgujgACDBpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzIEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1618793535\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.stateoffloridaliving.com%2fwhat-is-living-in-florida-really-like%2f\/RK=0\/RS=IbarguhaNLdMYHpjn4r8AIYRW5A-\" target=\"_blank\" data-016=\"607c63bf5983b\">What is Living In Florida Really Like &#8211; Moving To Florida<\/a>. The article describes three phases, or sets of feelings of people who move there. First comes the initial &#8220;honeymoon period,&#8221; which can last from three months to two years. Then comes an in-between period, from four months up to five years. Then finally comes the third phase, realizing &#8220;what living in Florida is <strong><em>really<\/em> <\/strong>like.&#8221; (From people who&#8217;ve lived there &#8220;for many years.&#8221;) There are some unanticipated negatives &#8220;never mentioned in the glossy promo brochures.&#8221; They include: 1) learning to live mostly indoors &#8220;to avoid sunburn and the hot muggy weather,&#8221; and 2) having to maintain your pool, because otherwise &#8220;the Florida sun will turn a pool into a thick pea-green soup in days if maintenance is not kept up:&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>At this point you are either in the group that has avoided or stopped doing things you loved outdoors altogether because of the <strong>hot muggy weather<\/strong> and will eventually leave the state &#8230; or you\u2019re stuck because there\u2019s no way you can afford to move out.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Or unless you are &#8220;forced&#8221; to leave the state as part of a nasty divorce proceeding. (Which turned out to be a\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1618767019780_265\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=A0geK9erbHxg0Q8AkRBpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1618795819\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fidioms.thefreedictionary.com%2fblessing%2bin%2bdisguise\/RK=0\/RS=A1m9NoEqEVrtje.qhvguVu3KEls-\" target=\"_blank\" data-497=\"607c6cabb5ab3\">blessing in disguise<\/a>. &#8220;Thank you Jesus!&#8221;<strong><em> And I really mean it<\/em><\/strong>.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/laketoho.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-10734 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/laketoho-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"laketoho\" width=\"207\" height=\"276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/laketoho-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/laketoho-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/laketoho-624x832.jpg 624w, https:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/laketoho.jpg 1511w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 207px) 100vw, 207px\" \/><\/a>But to be honest, in April &#8211; at least &#8211; some parts of Florida aren&#8217;t<strong><em> too<\/em><\/strong> bad. I ended up doing three kayaking trips on\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrJ7FiEhoRgzp8A4j1pCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzIEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1619326724\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fLake_Tohopekaliga\/RK=0\/RS=JiPowwKsn1Nm2zITZFt9cB3Rjvc-\" target=\"_blank\" data-1fa=\"60848684b9d4f\">Lake Tohopekaliga<\/a>. (At right.) I set out for my\u00a0 first kayaking &#8211; 90 minutes or so &#8211; from\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrE19P3h4RgRiUANDppCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1619327096\/RO=10\/RU=http%3a%2f%2fwww.bigtoho.com%2f\/RK=0\/RS=wv9.UOBj.GEpUogzaV07jV986Ew-\" target=\"_blank\" data-6eb=\"608487f864794\">Big Toho Marina<\/a>, on the north end of the lake. I wrote later, &#8220;It&#8217;s a big-ass lake, some 22,000 acres, about the size of Lake Oconee in GA, and four times the size of Lake MacIntosh&#8221; in Peachtree City. &#8220;Fortunately the locals refer to it as &#8216;Lake Toho.&#8217; As in &#8216;Big Toho Marina,&#8217; where I finally found a boat ramp.&#8221; (It took awhile to find a put-in that first early-Monday-morning.)<\/p>\n<p>The next day \u2013 Tuesday, April 13 \u2013 I did two trips. The first was out of the Big Toho Marina, again. Then after a snack and bladder break, I went out for a second kayaking, this time out of the Granada Public boat ramp. (South of Kissimmee and about at mid-lake of \u201cLake Toho.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>Then on the way home \u2013 Thursday, April 15, after a traffic-choked drive heading north by west over to\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrJ7Fivp4Rg4pAATHRpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzMEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1619335216\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fChiefland%2c_Florida\/RK=0\/RS=DgH6aQFZSi7m0jt53heEaEKMFsI-\" target=\"_blank\" data-d6b=\"6084a7b090ad7\">Chiefland<\/a>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0I kayaked an hour or so on the\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=A0geJaVOp4Rgfe4AyatpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1619335118\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fSuwannee_River\/RK=0\/RS=AXgEMhUd7TlP4pq1EUkLez7MIng-\" target=\"_blank\" data-65d=\"6084a74eece61\">Suwannee River<\/a>. I had planned to put in Friday morning at the free park right by the water in\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=A2KIbNMGqIRgOjMA2xhpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzMEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1619335303\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fFanning_Springs%2c_Florida\/RK=0\/RS=OsJbjYVDvL89g7FT6IsHg51hwEc-\" target=\"_blank\" data-d8b=\"6084a80776f71\">Fanning Springs<\/a>, but here\u2019s a traveler\u2019s alert.* That \u201cfree park\u201d is now closed; to put in there I\u2019d have to go next door into <a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1619306602944_846\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrE1xtpqIRgcsAA4wVpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1619335402\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.floridastateparks.org%2fparks-and-trails%2ffanning-springs-state-park\/RK=0\/RS=i8iCOJUE7ATrAUzpHdWxTydL57c-\" target=\"_blank\" data-4ca=\"6084a86a666cf\">Fanning Springs State Park<\/a>, which charges six dollars \u201cper vehicle.\u201d So I said the heck with that, and &#8211; with the Google app on my phone &#8211; I found the Log Landing public boat ramp. It&#8217;s 14 miles and some 20 minutes north of Fanning Springs, via County Road 341. <em>And had a pleasant paddle&#8230;\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">* \u00a0 * \u00a0 * \u00a0 *<\/p>\n<p>So all in all it was a pleasant four days. it was nice being with family again, exchanging memories from long ago, and occasionally hearing a family secret I didn&#8217;t know before. And the kayaking itself was a great change of pace from the three kayakable lakes around Peachtree City. Still &#8211; and as\u00a0<a title=\"Thomas Wolfe\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Wolfe\">Thomas Wolfe<\/a>\u00a0once wrote &#8211; &#8220;<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=A2KLfSaof4RgrZgAE05pCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1619324969\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fYou_Can%2527t_Go_Home_Again\/RK=0\/RS=O2WGLQrpNZjsA6PdMN8Ie9C5GXw-\" target=\"_blank\" data-1ba=\"60847fa921f7c\">You Can&#8217;t Go Home Again<\/a>.&#8221; The question is, what happens when you don&#8217;t <strong><em>want<\/em> <\/strong>to &#8220;go home?&#8221; When you don&#8217;t<strong><em> want<\/em> <\/strong>to go back and revisit all the trials and tribulations you had to go through to get where you are today?
