My ancestor William Bradford &#8211; who came over on the\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=A0geJaLCQ1Zgvo0A1rtpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzIEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1616294978\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fMayflower\/RK=0\/RS=_QJVTdZNgP_TvR2EP0wbd0zLI0U-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ef2=\"605643c2d37dd\">Mayflower<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; lived to the equivalent of 141 years old in today&#8217;s years. (Age 67, at a time when average life expectancy was 36 years.*) But whether I live to &#8220;141&#8221; like him, or 120 like Moses, or just one of the &#8220;seven times as many people over 100 by the year 2050,&#8221; I&#8217;ll have to pay attention to my diet. Which led to my interest in\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrE19ML.1VgrvUANP5pCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzIEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1616276364\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fDietary_supplement\/RK=0\/RS=XHGT7ey.lr7bJvt0RYaZiMHBpY8-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-d29=\"6055fb0c08fe7\">dietary supplements<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">* \u00a0 * \u00a0 * \u00a0 *<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I first became interested in supplements when I flew home &#8211; from Newark to the\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1532287270561_730\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrE1x8m2VRb9MoAImNpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByNXM5bzY5BGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMzBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1532316070\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fAtlanta\/RK=0\/RS=fhJ0NehWVMX7.gm0o.vFx18pSms-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-109=\"5b54d926d99bb\">ATL<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; in the summer of 2018. (After a week-long family visit, first to Pennsylvania&#8217;s\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"The Poconos\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Poconos\">Poconos<\/a>\u00a0region near the\u00a0<a title=\"Delaware Water Gap\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Delaware_Water_Gap\">Delaware Water Gap<\/a>. From there on to New York City, in part to &#8220;see a few shows.&#8221;) Flying back, the\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1532287338293_595\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ7Jpq2VRbpHsAEHtpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1532316138\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.swamedia.com%2fmagazine\/RK=0\/RS=1zqO.V1JqCPbVFLji5wKsYer8UE-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-822=\"5b54d96ac3f4b\">Southwest in-flight magazine<\/a>\u00a0had a full-page ad for\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1532287636885_470\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"http:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrE186V2lRbwFEAWT5pCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBybGY3bmpvBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMyBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1532316437\/RO=10\/RU=http%3a%2f%2fwww.mdriveformen.com%2f\/RK=0\/RS=sxaWMPSj3bedZCxBm7gqauPdI9w-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-481=\"5b54da958792a\">M-drive<\/a>. (A \u201cdaily supplement designed specifically for men.\u201d)\u00a0 And since I had just turned 67, the ad &#8220;piqued my interest.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Long story short,\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1532287636885_470\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"http:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrE186V2lRbwFEAWT5pCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBybGY3bmpvBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMyBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1532316437\/RO=10\/RU=http%3a%2f%2fwww.mdriveformen.com%2f\/RK=0\/RS=sxaWMPSj3bedZCxBm7gqauPdI9w-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-481=\"5b54da958792a\">M-drive<\/a>\u00a0wasn&#8217;t my cup of tea. But it did lead to some\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1532288001612_407\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A2KLfS0B3FRbZJYAjH5pCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1532316802\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fGoogle_%28verb%29\/RK=0\/RS=hPomjAl7l8HeBUc_yuQvmxMRY2M-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-6dc=\"5b54dc021c458\">Googling.<\/a>\u00a0which led me to\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1531781679876_144\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ7J4vIk1bmcEAnjJpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1531810480\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.menshealth.com%2fnutrition%2fa19539297%2fthe-top-10-supplements-for-men%2f\/RK=0\/RS=MChWnni22MbaxkAkYBCJfpKGRUM-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-d9d=\"5b4d223016f9d\">The Top 10 Supplements for Men\u00a0\u2013\u00a0menshealth.com<\/a>.* I ended up adding six of the ten recommended supplements to my routine. (I get Chromium and Folic Acid in my\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrJ6ycdSFZgBgYAj_lpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1616296093\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fMultivitamin\/RK=0\/RS=cBE7vfkH5ASW3kX5BaKUcGiRdUA-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-cb8=\"6056481d957c4\">multivitamin<\/a>, I opted out of Creatine, and already took\u00a0<a class=\"product-title-link line-clamp line-clamp-2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walmart.com\/ip\/Spring-Valley-Glucosamine-Chondroitin-Soft-Chews-Orange-Cream-Flavor-1500-mg-50-Ct\/10324586\">Glucosamine Chondroitin<\/a>, as noted below.)<\/p>\n<p>First off, I read about &#8220;Boron,&#8221; which <strong><em>especially<\/em> <\/strong>piqued my interest. It&#8217;s said to be good for a healthy prostate, and\u00a0my brother Tim and father had both gotten <a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=A0geK.cAHVZgkzgAoB1pCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1616285057\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fProstate_cancer\/RK=0\/RS=hJvOhOBjcLTfPhnB9pAZumtiFDA-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-c00=\"60561d012f973\">prostate cancer<\/a>. In turn:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The site said men with high boron levels are \u201c65 percent less likely to develop prostate cancer than men with lower levels.\u201d It added that American men on average have one of the\u00a0<strong><em>lowest<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>boron intakes in the world. The site recommended\u00a03 milligrams (mg) a day, and added that it \u201cdoesn\u2019t just fight cancer: USDA researchers found that this is the best dosage to improve memory and concentration.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I figured I could definitely use all the help I could get for my <a class=\" td-hu\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/aol\/image;_ylt=A0geKejmSVZg_wcA9f9pCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzMEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Nj?q=memory+concentration&amp;v_t=comsearch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-a01=\"605649e6c6919\">memory and concentration<\/a>.*<\/p>\n<p>Number <strong><em>Two<\/em><\/strong> on the list was Calcium.* The article said American men generally get\u00a0only a third of the calcium they need, and that &#8220;men with the highest calcium intakes weigh less on average than men consuming less calcium.&#8221; (And at this time in my life I&#8217;m going more for the &#8220;<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrJ7J5rHVZgka0ABDxpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzcEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1616285163\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.wisegeek.com%2fwhat-does-lean-and-mean-mean.htm\/RK=0\/RS=1UY1SJEE_WQULt_Dq7XTa4Amu9g-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-11c=\"60561d6bcb134\">Lean and Mean<\/a>&#8221; look.) I got enough Chromium &#8211; Number <strong><em>Three<\/em> <\/strong>on the list &#8211; from the multivitamin I was already taking. Number <strong><em>Four<\/em><\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1532290318235_845\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrE19YN5VRbTkAAXCxpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBybGY3bmpvBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMyBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1532319118\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fCoenzyme_Q10\/RK=0\/RS=HAJLoK1zkPOFOC5czekfVQ6F6jQ-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-909=\"5b54e50e6bdd6\">Coenzyme Q10<\/a>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0helps manage the body\u2019s energy. But for us older folk the only way to \u201cget back up to youthful levels&#8221; is a supplement:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Recent studies suggest that coenzyme Q10 may fight cancer, Parkinson\u2019s disease, and Huntington\u2019s disease, and may thin the blood to help prevent heart disease. Q10 is also packed with free-radical-fighting antioxidants, which can slow the signs of aging.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>One problem? You can&#8217;t get this in just a vitamin supplement or daily food. But I lucked out and found\u00a0GNC\u2019s\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1532051127059_1372\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ7J22PlFbErkADD9pCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBydWNmY2MwBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwM0BHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1532079926\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.gnc.com%2ftriple-strength-fish-oil%2f736021.html\/RK=0\/RS=U8wBSMi6BUdDylnaAkAFjXh.uME-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-c1d=\"5b513eb6ce980\">Triple Strength Fish Oil<strong><em>\u00a0Plus<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>CoQ-10<\/a>.\u00a0(\u201cTwo for the price of one.\u201d See below.)<\/p>\n<p>I opted out of Number<strong><em> Five<\/em><\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1532290965103_678\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrE196V51Rb_5QAEwZpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1532319765\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fCreatine\/RK=0\/RS=fJK953qq.doDidi1VVxd0Xh1JBw-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-82a=\"5b54e795a49db\">Creatine<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; as\u00a0\u201ctoo body-builderish,\u201d as shown below left. I&#8217;ve been getting <strong>way<\/strong> less than I thought! According to the July 2018 post, I got 500 mg a day &#8211; of the recommended 1,200 &#8211; with &#8220;soft chews.&#8221; But at some point in time they went off the market, so I switched to\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrJ7Jj2UVdgnloAuDhpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1616364150\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.gnc.com%2fcalcium%2f097312.html\/RK=0\/RS=JA74OJMWsSBjC6esKL2gMQPy6oM-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-b09=\"605751f6f32cb\">GNC Calcium Citrate 1000 mg<\/a>, in caplet form. Apparently I figured each caplet had 1000 mg as well, so for years now I&#8217;ve been cutting each caplet in half, per day.\u00a0(Thinking to get &#8220;my&#8221; 500 mg.) But this morning, switching an empty to the new store-bought one, I saw the fine print. The fine print said the serving size was<strong> four<\/strong> caplets!\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Which leads to another side note. Starting back in July 2018, I took less than half the recommended 1,200 mg. For one thing, I figured half would be plenty, and that I could get other calcium each day through cheese, yogurt or other dairy products. But I also didn&#8217;t want to risk a\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1532289908199_762\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ7Jp041RbWRAAGwNpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBydWNmY2MwBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwM0BHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1532318708\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fKidney_stone\/RK=0\/RS=XIelN0kaeQuFjrJT8uK0UBWE.1U-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-97d=\"5b54e374a4b28\">kidney stone<\/a>, like what you can get taking\u00a0calcium\u00a0<em>phosphate. But the point of all this is that for years now, instead of getting what I thought was 500 mg of calcium citrate, <strong>I&#8217;ve been getting a mere 125 mg! <\/strong>Which figures out to a quarter of what I intended, and about 12 percent of the daily recommended. So from now on I&#8217;ll start taking two of the GNC recommended four caplets. (Even though I have to cut them in half to swallow, and even then sometimes have to crunch them with my teeth to get &#8217;em down.)
