An editor’s note:\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>I originally did this post – on a book about the “mysterious death of Ashley Wilkes” – in 2015. It was a “Page” link – along with\u00a0ABOUT THAT \u201cWASP\u201d NAME<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0ABOUT THE BLOG<\/a>\u00a0– at the top of the main page. This was\u00a0<\/em>shortly after I published “The Mysterious Death of Ashley Wilkes,” discussed below.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>Again, that was in October 2015<\/strong>, which gives you an idea how long it’s been since I’ve published a book.<\/em><\/p>\n

But then in November 2020 I published a new<\/strong> book, described in the post “On ‘(Some of) My Adventures in Old Age<\/a>.'”\u00a0<\/em>Which brings up at least one note: The\u00a0nom de plume<\/a>\u00a0I used for the 2015 Ashley Wilkes book was “T.D. Scribe.” (Short for “The DOR Scribe.”)<\/em><\/p>\n

Since then I’ve been using a new pen name, “James B. Ford.” And for the record, I’ll be re<\/strong>-publishing “Mysterious Death” and some other books under that fake name under the newer “James B. Ford.” But for now you can\u00a0go to\u00a0Amazon.com: Kindle eBooks<\/a>\u00a0and type in \u201cJames B. Ford” to locate the blurb on “Adventures in Old Age.” Meanwhile here’s the original 2015 “For a book version:”]<\/em><\/p>\n

[From October 2015:] I just published a collection of posts from this blog. \u00a0(As noted in the\u00a0Introduction to \u201cAshley Wilkes<\/a>.\u201d) The\u00a0title<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0of the book came from a post I did back on September 1. \u00a0(The \u201cstrange\u201d death of Ashley Wilkes<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 and other tales from the Georgia Wasp.)<\/p>\n

The\u00a0cover<\/em>\u00a0features the poster above left, at the top of the page. The poster came from the movie\u00a0Spitfire<\/em><\/strong>, originally titled\u00a0The First of the Few<\/a><\/em>\u00a0in Britain. The film was released in Britain on September 12, 1942. Less than nine months later \u2013 \u201con or about<\/a>\u201d\u00a0June 1, 1943 \u2013 Lesley Howard\u2019s airliner was shot down by eight\u00a0Luftwaffe<\/a><\/i>Junkers Ju 88C6<\/a>\u00a0fighters over the\u00a0Bay of Biscay<\/a>. It may have been an accident. \u00a0The Germans may have been\u00a0really<\/em>\u00a0after Winston Churchill. Or Howard \u2013 \u201cAshley Wilkes\u201d \u2013 may have been the dangerous British spy the Germans\u00a0thought<\/em>\u00a0he was.<\/p>\n

This second blog \u2013 modeled on the\u00a0Carolina Israelite<\/a><\/em>\u00a0\u2013 is devoted to more secular subjects and<\/em><\/strong> an\u00a0homage<\/a><\/em>\u00a0to\u00a0Harry Golden<\/a>. For example, this<\/em><\/strong> blog lets me explore such varied topics as\u00a0Oscar Wilde and \u201cgross indecencies<\/a>,\u201d \u201cWhen adultery was proof of \u2018loyalty<\/a>,’\u201d\u00a0\u2018Mi Dulce\u2019 \u2013 and Donald Trump \u2013 made me a Contrarian<\/a>,\u00a0and any\u00a0number of\u00a0Travelogs<\/a>…<\/p>\n

As noted in \u201cIntro<\/a>,\u201d I now have my first book-collection of essays. \u00a0In turn, that collection may eventually be seen as a worthy reflection of Harry\u2019s first such effort, 1958\u2019s\u00a0Only in America<\/a>. \u00a0<\/em>As the old saying goes: \u00a0\u201cImitation\u00a0is the sincerest form of flattery<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although to Oscar Wilde \u2013 seen below \u2013 such imitation was \u201cthe sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.\u201d \u00a0(Which may of course be also true\u2026<\/em>)<\/p>\n
