I&#8217;ll end the book with my last overseas adventure, from September 2019. That&#8217;s when I hiked the Portuguese Camino from Porto &#8220;back up&#8221; to Santiago de Compostela. <em>(I hiked and biked the\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrJ6SSqcH9funAAn8lpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1602216235\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fFrench_Way\/RK=0\/RS=iWA.4mwnHpbRyBTeeYnfGJMamb0-\" target=\"_blank\" data-3b2=\"5f7f70ab94524\">French Way<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; from Pamplona to\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=A0geKeohcX9f74gAMmVpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1602216354\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fSantiago_de_Compostela\/RK=0\/RS=_bNjD_Vrr_2DNL7oSHsH6EfwG94-\" target=\"_blank\" data-949=\"5f7f71228998b\">Santiago<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; with my brother in 2017.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Which led me to the last post I actually\u00a0<strong><em>did<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0on the trip. Back in October, 2019, I posted\u00a0 \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=8720\" rel=\"bookmark\">\u201cGreetings from the Portuguese Camino<\/a>.&#8221; But that post only got as far as\u00a0<a title=\"Ponte de Lima\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ponte_de_Lima\">Ponte\u00a0de Lima<\/a>: &#8220;We\u00a0started out on the Coastal Route after Porto, then shunted over to the Inland Route. There \u2013 among other rivers \u2013 we crossed the\u00a0<a title=\"Lima river\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lima_river\">Lima River<\/a>\u00a0at\u00a0<a title=\"Ponte de Lima\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ponte_de_Lima\"><strong><em>Ponte<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>de Lima<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0Since\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1601991407718_546\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrE1.DtcnxfyPsAMBdpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1602020206\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fmaps.google.com%2f\/RK=0\/RS=GH4CeSPkmCWt9A_cNAWSHWpJp10-\" target=\"_blank\" data-077=\"5f7c72ee55523\">Google Maps<\/a>\u00a0has the distance from Porto to Ponte de Lima as 51 miles or so, and since they had the distance from Porto to Santiago de Compostela as 153 miles, that meant I only covered a third of the hike.<\/p>\n<p>Which is why I ended the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=8720\" rel=\"bookmark\">Greetings<\/a>\u00a0post with this: &#8220;I\u2019ll be writing more about our Portuguese Camino adventure, but in the meantime: The good memories weren\u2019t\u00a0<strong><em>just<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0limited to <a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A2KLfR7KjaddvPYAByVpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBybGY3bmpvBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMyBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1571290699\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.beeradvocate.com%2fbeer%2fprofile%2f4173%2f18067%2f\/RK=0\/RS=KoS8EjkSqr52Y9zNJ1H5jd2zZZY-\" target=\"_blank\" data-e93=\"5da78dcb78c3d\">Cruzcampo<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sagres_(beer)\">Sagres<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrE19_4XH9f.4sAr0ppCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1602211192\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.mahou.com%2fen%2f\/RK=0\/RS=ZO36wBOk7OoN4kvU7gLA9fGdwQs-\" target=\"_blank\" data-d55=\"5f7f5cf8d1bd3\">Mahou<\/a> and\u00a0<a title=\"Super Bock\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Super_Bock\">Super Bock<\/a>\u2026&#8221; <em>(Four Portuguese beers.) <\/em>But I<strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>also\u00a0wrote about the trip in my companion blog. I called it\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dorscribe.com\/?p=16051\" rel=\"bookmark\">Just got back \u2013 Portuguese Camino<\/a>, and started off with the same &#8220;boy are my arms tired&#8221; <strong><em><a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=A0geKI7BdHxf8uEAchtpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzIEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1602020674\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.thefreedictionary.com%2fschtick\/RK=0\/RS=fmLBefNvaLku6oB1teIIzbDiIAg-\" target=\"_blank\" data-b70=\"5f7c74c210e09\">schtick<\/a><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0as the\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=8720\" rel=\"bookmark\">\u201cGreetings<\/a>&#8221; post:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I just flew back from Lisbon in Portugal.\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/answers.yahoo.com\/question\/index;_ylt=A0geJaQYLZFdn28AXb9pCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBybGY3bmpvBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMyBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--?qid=20080729105842AA6fvDm\" target=\"_blank\" data-4ca=\"5d912d192ffaf\">\u201cAnd, boy, are my arms tired<\/a>!\u201d But seriously, I\u00a0<strong><em>did<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>just finish a 160-mile hike* on the Portuguese Camino. I flew to Lisbon on August 28 and flew back [home] on September 25, and so technically was gone a full month.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I had some notes on flying into Lisbon and getting to my hotel room. &#8220;Another red-eye flight, just like the one I made to Tel Aviv and Israel last May.&#8221; I also learned early on that &#8211; as far as Lisbon goes &#8211; the internet lied about cheap Portuguese taxis.\u00a0<em>(Bonjour!)\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>Instead of a four-Euro ride to my hotel &#8211; as I\u2019d been led to believe &#8211; it was more like 15 Euros. Which wasn\u2019t\u00a0<strong><em>that<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>bad, for one ride anyway. But luckily I hooked up with the Lisbon Metro.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_5pbx userContent _3576\" data-testid=\"post_message\" data-ft=\"{&quot;tn&quot;:&quot;K&quot;}\">I took the Red Line Metro train from &#8220;Aeroporto&#8221; station and got off at Saldanha station. My \u201cHotel Alif\u201d was right across from <a class=\" td-hu\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/aol\/image;_ylt=AwrE1xLwH31fUo0AOFtpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzIEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Nj?q=campo+pequeno&amp;v_t=comsearch\" target=\"_blank\" data-1fd=\"5f7d1ff148cc0\">Campo Pequeno<\/a>. It\u2019s a famous bull ring togged out like one of our football stadiums, but with lots of restaurants open on weekdays. It&#8217;s circular, with the bull-ring in the middle, and all around the perimeter they have restaurants, along with stairs, restrooms and the like. Much like our football or baseball stadiums.\u00a0<em>(That first day I got yelled at for cutting through one of the restaurants, getting acquainted with the area. Next night I went back to that restaurant for dinner and got served by the same waiter. He seemed a lot nicer then.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"_5pbx userContent _3576\" data-testid=\"post_message\" data-ft=\"{&quot;tn&quot;:&quot;K&quot;}\">Also next day \u2013 Friday, August 30 \u2013 I did some touristy stuff, including a visit to the\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0geJGqsA5ldsSwAuydpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByNXM5bzY5BGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMzBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1570337836\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fPadr%25C3%25A3o_dos_Descobrimentos\/RK=0\/RS=fp4T1m35QgmvRjUpGC48AjWRBHs-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Padr\u00e3o dos Descobrimentos<\/a>\u00a0<em>(\u201cMonument to the Discoveries\u201d). <\/em>That&#8217;s been a lifelong dream, or at least it has been since 1979, when I made my first trip to Europe and couldn\u2019t make it to Lisbon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_5pbx userContent _3576\" data-testid=\"post_message\" data-ft=\"{&quot;tn&quot;:&quot;K&quot;}\">For a small fee I took the elevator up to the observation tower.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_5pbx userContent _3576\" data-testid=\"post_message\" data-ft=\"{&quot;tn&quot;:&quot;K&quot;}\">There I heard three young ladies talking, and I could actually understand what they were saying, mostly.\u00a0<em>(A welcome change.)<\/em> It turned out they were from Australia. I also visited the <a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=A2KLfSinY35fZWEADjFpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzQEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1602147368\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fNavy_Museum_%28Portugal%29\/RK=0\/RS=fIGkTeVFJ6dahrCV..gFTl7q_VQ-\" target=\"_blank\" data-854=\"5f7e63a88a00d\">Museu de Marinha<\/a>\u00a0<em>(Navy Museum)<\/em>, a few blocks up from the Monument. I crossed through the\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=A2KLfRyFZH5fm5sAzLZpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1602147590\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fPra%25C3%25A7a_do_Imp%25C3%25A9rio\/RK=0\/RS=WgfuHmrhnGd0TvnP6EDC5Fdomtg-\" target=\"_blank\" data-565=\"5f7e64863cb96\">Pra\u00e7a do Imp\u00e9rio<\/a>, the city square and park between the two museums. There was a &#8220;Loja&#8221; at the Pavilh\u00e3o das Galeotas, displaying &#8220;royal vessels.&#8221; This was across a square from the main entrance. They served beer at the Loja, so before going over to the entrance I stopped and enjoyed a \u201cSagres.\u201d <em>(Which became one of my four favorite Portuguese beers.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"_5pbx userContent _3576\" data-testid=\"post_message\" data-ft=\"{&quot;tn&quot;:&quot;K&quot;}\">On Saturday, the 31st, I took a train up to Porto, coming in at\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Campanh%C3%A3\">Campanh\u00e3<\/a>\u00a0station.\u00a0I met up with Tom and Carol, who were waiting at the station. <em>(Thankfully.)<\/em>\u00a0I&#8217;d booked a room at the <a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1602119772337_847\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrEze1baH5fxTEAYRFpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1602148572\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.tripadvisor.ca%2fHotel_Review-g189180-d12528087-Reviews-Oporto_Brothers_Hostel-Porto_Porto_District_Northern_Portugal.html\/RK=0\/RS=z_WH_aHAqvXFvx2_.ePcCBcq9.w-\" target=\"_blank\" data-625=\"5f7e685c54278\">Oporto Brothers Hostel<\/a>, Rua da Alegria 919. They&#8217;d gotten a place at Rua Antero Quental 374, a 12-minute walk from my hostel. It&#8217;s a 16-minute walk via the Rua da Constitui\u00e7\u00e3o, but that&#8217;s one of the main drags in Porto.\u00a0I&#8217;ve found that the name of a major street can come in handy if you get lost in a city where they don\u2019t speak your language. But in case you can&#8217;t pronounce it right (&#8220;Rua da Constitui\u00e7\u00e3o\u201d), it helps to have it written down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_5pbx userContent _3576\" data-testid=\"post_message\" data-ft=\"{&quot;tn&quot;:&quot;K&quot;}\">So, I unloaded my pack at Oporto Brothers, then we spent the next day and a half sightseeing.\u00a0For one thing we visited the\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=A2KLfSenZn5f548AdC1pCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1602148136\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fCasa_do_Infante\/RK=0\/RS=BGN1I0w1XIaB6qunDapH3eXxa3I-\" target=\"_blank\" data-e42=\"5f7e66a87d55f\">Casa do Infante<\/a>. It featured\u00a0an historical collection in the house where\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrJ7FpBZ35fCewAxQppCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzIEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1602148290\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fHenry_the_Navigator\/RK=0\/RS=nvUnq0MHCk6MbNjzUYFPNkVU6nM-\" target=\"_blank\" data-03a=\"5f7e67427cc3f\">Prince Henry the Navigator<\/a>\u00a0was born.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_5pbx userContent _3576\" data-testid=\"post_message\" data-ft=\"{&quot;tn&quot;:&quot;K&quot;}\">We also went to a wine &#8211; or rather &#8220;port&#8221; &#8211; tasting, but I was a bit disappointed. One small glass, and here I was ready to forego beer for the day. <em>(They say, &#8220;<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=A0geK.RSaX5fnfoA5pdpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1602148818\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.barrypopik.com%2findex.php%2fnew_york_city%2fentry%2fnever_mix_the_grape_and_the_grain\/RK=0\/RS=PtUolrGBMC.NVtfdm6Da5j5qul8-\" target=\"_blank\" data-4f3=\"5f7e6952c2bfc\">Never mix the grape and the grain<\/a>.&#8221;) <\/em>And we took a cruise on one of the\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrJ7FytaX5ff4QAwDppCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzIEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1602148909\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fRabelo_Boat\/RK=0\/RS=HqX66a30Etcukw515dEHOYF0lzw-\" target=\"_blank\" data-b99=\"5f7e69adbe268\">Rabelo boats<\/a>\u00a0that Porto is famous for. From the boat ramp beside the\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=A0geJaFHan5fz7YA5JVpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzIEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1602149063\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fde.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fPonte_do_Freixo\/RK=0\/RS=QpxteckjcvBuupvzt5YT1EGEguI-\" target=\"_blank\" data-828=\"5f7e6a47d8ba3\">Ponte do Freixo<\/a>\u00a0out to the Atlantic Ocean, pretty much the same way &#8211; beside the river &#8211; that we&#8217;d be hiking the next day. As for\u00a0some <strong><em>flavor<\/em><\/strong> of that first day&#8217;s hike:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"js_cq\" class=\"_5pbx userContent _3576\" data-testid=\"post_message\" data-ft=\"{&quot;tn&quot;:&quot;K&quot;}\">We hiked west along the Douro River, on the Porto side, then hit the Atlantic Ocean and swung north. It\u2019s the lesser traveled scenic alternative for the Camino Portuguese. Lots of beachside resorts, bathing beauties, and of course some old pot-bellied guys in speedos.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>On the plus side &#8211; aside from fat guys in speedos &#8211; I got a picture that first morning of two lovely young fellow\u00a0<em><u><a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ61vWBZld6_kAblhpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByNXQ0NThjBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwM1BHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1570338390\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wiktionary.org%2fwiki%2fperegrino\/RK=0\/RS=OeQv9Tdsgn40eZQwsPu5_WqVPK4-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">peregrin<\/a>o<\/u>s.<\/em>\u00a0One was adjusting the other&#8217;s pack. <em>(I&#8217;m always interested in the gear my fellow hikers are packing. I might <strong>learn<\/strong> something.)<\/em>\u00a0Later I\u00a0posted on Facebook: \u201cFirst day\u2019s hike is history. West through Porto \u2013 with shady spots and sidewalk cafes \u2013 and out to the coast. Then north. Made Cabo do Mundo, 10.8 miles. Nothing too sore. Good first hike.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That last referred to the first\u00a0<strong><em>day\u2019s<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0hike. It was a nice thought<em> (&#8220;nothing too sore&#8221;)<\/em>, but turned out misleading.\u00a0I learned &#8211; yet again &#8211; that it\u2019s not the first day of hiking, or even three, that wears on the feet. It\u2019s the pounding of\u00a0<strong><em>day after day<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0of hiking with a 15-pound pack.<em> (They recommend no more than ten percent of your body weight.)<\/em> And it\u2019s my opinion that there\u2019s no way to train in advance for that \u2013 except to do the same constant hiking at home, day after day. A long hike once or twice a week won\u2019t do it. But Tom stayed in one back in 2017, when he started in France and hiked over the Pyrenees. That was enough. From then on &#8211; &#8220;even to this day&#8221; &#8211; he&#8217;ll book ahead for private rooms.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Anyway, in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=8720\" rel=\"bookmark\">Greetings<\/a>\u00a0post I talked about taking pictures with my cheap tablet, then posting them on Facebook to the folks back home. Posting pictures on Facebook with a tablet wasn\u2019t that hard, but writing commentary was a pain. \u201cFor one thing I seem to have fat thumbs.\u201d For another, the tablet\u2019s \u201cautocorrect\u201d had a serious problem with foreign\u00a0<em>(Portuguese)<\/em>\u00a0names.<\/p>\n<p>For example it kept changing the \u201cde\u201d or \u201cdo\u201d in so many Portuguese city names to \u201cDr.\u201d\u00a0<strong><em>Every<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0time. Tom and I slept in the living room, me on the couch. But there\u00a0<em>was<\/em>\u00a0a nice restaurant nearby.<\/p>\n<p>Which brings us <strong><em>way<\/em> <\/strong>past the preferred number of words in a blog post. So I\u2019ll be doing at least one more post in the near future on this adventure. I&#8217;m hoping to finish my &#8220;Old Age Adventure&#8221; book in time for Christmas.
