I applied that knowledge to some fellow classmates from my high school &#8220;Class of 1969.&#8221; Here&#8217;s what happened&#8230;\u00a0Back in October [2019] I thought about going to my 50-year high school class reunion.<em><strong> SO<\/strong><\/em>, I got in touch with a number of &#8220;old&#8221; classmates via the Class of &#8217;69 Facebook page.<\/p>\n<p>It was then I learned how <strong><em>way<\/em><\/strong> too many of them had turned <strong><em>way<\/em><\/strong> too old, grumpy, frustrated, whiny and\/or negative <a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ7JbCu0BeLXwA3RRpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBybGY3bmpvBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMyBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1581329475\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.thefreedictionary.com%2fgeezer\/RK=0\/RS=OyHOAqmL1kyMksm9gkCGqu4rJ.I-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-abc=\"5e40bbc353c13\">geezers<\/a>. <em>(&#8220;What happened to those bright-eyed youngsters, all full of hope and hormones?&#8221;)\u00a0<\/em>I ended up not going to the reunion, but still tried to keep in touch.<em> (For one thing it was my Christian duty to try and &#8220;bring them back from the <a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrE19IN1DxehLsAAj9pCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1581073550\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fidioms.thefreedictionary.com%2fdark%2bside%2bof\/RK=0\/RS=biwi4bPuPWd7eY4DvnTPkpOmvz4-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-06f=\"5e3cd40e61ffb\">Dark Side<\/a>.*&#8221;)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But then it got to be too much. I kept losing sleep, trying to think of snappy comebacks, ways to &#8220;reach those people&#8221; through clever rhetoric and Christian patience.<\/p>\n<p>I <strong><em>did<\/em> <\/strong>think of some snappy comebacks, but usually six or so hours later. By then &#8220;they&#8221; had posted even more negative items, which kept on coming, and coming, and coming. Of course I didn&#8217;t want to tell any new Facebook &#8220;friends&#8221; that I&#8217;d &#8220;un-friended&#8221; them. I still wanted to reach them, if possible. But on that same &#8220;yesterday&#8221; I <strong><em>did<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0note &#8211; on Facebook &#8211; that I was taking a break from politics. And on that note I posted a &#8220;remembering&#8221; photo from my recent <a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=8720\">Camino hike in Portugal<\/a>. <em>(Featuring some bikini-clad lovelies on a beach north of Porto.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So &#8211; in that same vein &#8211; I hereby offer up in this blog a similar meditation, on some happy times back in the summer of 2016, <strong><em>BT<\/em><\/strong>. (<em>Before Trump.)\u00a0<\/em>Like the time I kayaked across the\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Narrows\">Verrazano Narrows<\/a>, from Staten Island to Brooklyn, and back. I covered the story in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=5197\" rel=\"bookmark\">\u201cNo city for Grouchy Old White People<\/a>,&#8221; and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=5053\" rel=\"bookmark\">\u201cNo city for Grouchy Old White People\u201d \u2013 Part II<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The posts were about a visit to New York City, while staying in Staten Island and taking the Ferry back and forth to Manhattan. Their point: \u201cNew York City is a refreshing reminder that there\u2019s more to this country than just the right-wing wackos so prevalent back home in \u2018The Bubble.\u2019\u201d <em>(To wit: my area of Georgia.) <\/em>And speaking of Facebook, here&#8217;s what I posted about the trip:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Ever since last Saturday, September 17, we\u2019ve been taking the Staten Island ferry into and back from Manhattan Island. So that\u2019s eight times \u2013 twice a day for four days now \u2013 that we\u2019ve seen the Statute of Liberty, off in the distance\u2026 \u00a0And I don\u2019t remember ONCE seeing a sign that said, \u201cthe heck with your tired, your poor,\u201d those \u201cwretched refuse \u2026 yearning to breathe free.\u201d \u00a0<strong>WE\u2019RE GONNA BUILD A FRIKKIN WALL!<\/strong>\u201c<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There&#8217;s more in that vein in the <a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=5053\" rel=\"bookmark\">Grouchy Old White People<\/a>\u00a0posts. But on Thursday, September 22, while the rest of the family left for further adventures on their own, I packed up and then kayaked across the Verrazano Narrows.<em>\u00a0 (Mostly following the Bridge of the same name.) \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/8aPakj2gzCw7QelCIJexpKeyiyBR5P6sXLJBwXgVVQUAiEX4xidrsplbUHSH3tO_lDtE8q8Vf7aOclkf2xf8C9Ea3USM8MdXEayJL1icgO7HlcuJ2zFhJPbF0tZF3r_ZDEzpNKooq6zdnDFbohiCmuAcITh3Gij5eW5dalQf-R66MXAIeIrKAIHRNut_eh_EUiiWYoqp-Ad8UmdRDPevTG-IbT2m2Pfo5fvfH0kc5-8KbBiSlVhg-cGnQ_YjENIpoopHoDNmGalWVctY2DH7mQtUk8-YgJ2yuX54Mf3H9RiWvBF6apxyhqYmniiOpxZDlthjZVLhbsCPzBUrJYk9SSS-KJ2qi3VfNcNtByDKatuqmDKN4r7TFi93s3hNhUQ6TkcEj0TcDMM2fxwArWXbo17HgBNT6uKrYtaefYo7luM4u2TvDQL86SwJ7Fl4IluCFF6Dwp4MYZwWisOTl45qZR1bk7-7NWd10vxa027d2TDUy7qXt601RFsytg7kMu6SiSxrHXWPLiaRqV5oRsdg90Itzv852BSbxVi67Qm0fJNxgul1OqaYCvp6i84WtV-ba9Pyj5PSNVsOLjhjm243W-hHFwBh0hAmnFmM64EwIQB9FEg4=w416-h631-no\" width=\"141\" height=\"214\" \/>So here &#8211; at left &#8211; is a photo I took, from the kayak, about half-way back to Staten Island. \u00a0You may notice the waters are fairly choppy. \u00a0And I can tell you those waters got\u00a0<strong><em>WAY<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0choppier than when I started.<em>\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>In other words, I seem to have started out \u2013 that fine Thursday morning \u2013 on pretty much of a\u00a0<a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/neap+tide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url noopener\">neap tide<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It only took me 20 minutes to get from Staten Island to Brooklyn, and I like to do a full two hours of kayaking a week. \u00a0So on the way over I toyed with the idea of cruising along the Atlantic side of Brooklyn for awhile. <em>(And maybe even reaching <a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ6ywvzEJeG70Afy5pCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByNXM5bzY5BGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMzBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1581464752\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fConey_Island\/RK=0\/RS=VAYNEOBHP7EZ9MwGTXwy85wjMOI-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-89f=\"5e42cc30250c3\">Coney Island<\/a>.)<\/em> But I decided not to, mostly because I figured it&#8217;d be better to start back to the put-in side while I was still fresh.<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s a good thing I did. \u00a0As I was paddling back toward Staten Island the tide started going in. Which wasn\u2019t so bad, since at worst it would have swept me in toward Hoboken&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Long story short, with the change of tide and all, I ended up having a mere 13 minutes left of my two-hours-of-kayaking-a-week quota. That&#8217;s when I finally got back to where I put in, at\u00a0<a class=\"find\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com\/Attraction_Review-g48682-d3268006-Reviews-Franklin_D_Roosevelt_Boardwalk_and_Beach-Staten_Island_New_York.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url noopener\">Roosevelt Beach<\/a>\u00a0on Staten Island.\u00a0<em>\u00a0(And got dunked \u201ccoming in for a landing.\u201d)<\/em>\u00a0 But it could have been worse.
