The 1868 impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson<\/a>. Any connection to current events?<\/i><\/p>\n <\/i><\/i>* \u00a0 * \u00a0 * \u00a0 *<\/p>\n This blog is modeled on the\u00a0Carolina Israelite<\/a><\/em>. \u00a0That was an old-time\u00a0newspaper<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 more like a personal\u00a0newsletter<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 written and published by\u00a0Harry Golden<\/a>. \u00a0Back in the\u00a01950s<\/a>, people called\u00a0Harry<\/a>\u00a0a \u00a0\u201cvoice of sanity amid the braying of jackals.\u201d \u00a0(For his work on the\u00a0Israelite<\/a>.)<\/em><\/p>\n Which is now my goal as well. \u00a0To be a\u00a0\u201cvoice of sanity amid the braying of jackals<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n For more on the blog-name connection, see the notes below.<\/p>\n In the meantime:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n I just got back from a month in Portugal, hiking the Camino Portuguese from Porto to Santiago. Meanwhile, in the last few days since I got home, there’s been a lot of political hubbub in the news. As in Trump Impeachment Poll: Public Support Rises<\/a>.<\/p>\n So before starting any posts on my recent adventure-pilgrimage, it might be good to review some posts I did in the past. About<\/em><\/strong> Donald Trump. Like the one predicting he’d “be impeached within two years<\/a>.” (Which cited another past post, from before<\/strong> the election, asking if Trump might be the “new Maverick in town.” See April 2016’s\u00a0\u201cIs there a new \u2018Maverick\u2019 in town<\/a>?”)<\/em><\/p>\n We missed that deadline, from November 2016. On the other hand we are<\/em><\/strong> coming up on three years into his first term. (Putting aside <\/i>– “tabling<\/a><\/span><\/u>*” – the <\/em>question whether he’ll have a second term.)<\/em> And yet many people still support him. Why? One possible answer might have come in last April’s On Oscar Wilde and our \u201ccriminal heroes<\/a>.” It came in turn from an article in the Jan\/Feb 2019 National Geographic History Magazine<\/a>, “Jesse James: Rise of an American outlaw<\/a>.”<\/p>\n It seems that Wilde was in America in 1882 – in St. Joseph, Missouri \u2013 the week after Jesse James<\/a> was killed. Thus he witnessed “firsthand the mad clamor for relics of the outlaw at an auction of Jesse\u2019s household belongings.\u201d That led Wilde to observe: \u201cAmericans are certainly great hero-worshipers, and always take their heroes from the criminal classes.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n Which – as I said – could explain the continuing support of Donald Trump from a large part of “the sovereign people.” Then too, Americans tend to admire “rebels” as well, as explored in the post-election (11\/16) post, Donald Trump \u2013 The new Johnny Yuma<\/a>? Which included this:<\/p>\n I have to admit I\u2019ve been pretty much\u00a0stymie<\/a>d since the election, last November 8. The best I could come up with since then was\u00a0\u201cTrump is like a box of chocolates<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0 [11\/13\/16…]\u00a0 <\/em>It\u2019s as if the\u00a0Muses<\/a>\u00a0have abandoned me. On the one hand I want to be fair and not cranky. (Like so many other people my age.) <\/em>But on the other hand I have this deep sense of\u00a0foreboding<\/a>\u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Which sense of foreboding could be coming to fruition “even as we speak.”<\/p>\n And which brings up a common phrase in this blog, “past Trump-posts.” It could<\/em><\/strong> be related to another new word, Trumpgret<\/a>. See New Word: Trumpgret! – debatepolitics.com<\/a>. (A word “bandied about by many voters that now ‘regret’ having voted for Trump in 2016.”)<\/em><\/p>\n But getting back to Trump as a rebel. The Yuma post noted that I “Googled<\/a>\u00a0the words ‘Donald Trump rebel’ and got 46,300,00 results.” And that one such link was the article, How the Rebel Flag Rose Again \u2013 and Is Helping Trump<\/a>.\u00a0 (“That title pretty much speaks for itself.”)\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n Which I suppose means that the current Democratic House of Representative’s moves to impeach Trump can be seen – by some<\/em><\/strong> Americans anyway – as the functional equivalent of \u201cthe dirty little coward who shot Mr. Howard<\/a>,” as illustrated at right.* (If I’m being too subtle,\u00a0 Trump is portrayed as the “heroic Jesse James.”)<\/em><\/p>\n Then there was another post from the past,\u00a0 \u201cI dreamed I saw Don Trump last night<\/a>.” It asked the musical question:<\/p>\n 50 years from now [could] that dulcet-toned lass [Joan Baez<\/a>] be\u00a0singing that\u00a0ode<\/a>\u00a0to Donald Trump to the tune of\u00a0\u201cI dreamed I saw Joe Hill last night<\/a>[?]” Joan Baez<\/a>\u00a0sang the original song \u2013 about Joe Hill \u2013 most memorably at Woodstock<\/a>,\u00a0back in the summer of 1969.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n That post noted that “in some strange way\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 educated at the\u00a0New York Military Academy<\/a>, then the\u00a0Wharton School<\/a>” and worth over three billion dollars* \u2013 “has somehow become a hero to the (white) American working man.” It also noted that comparing Trump to famed labor activist and union organizer Joe Hill<\/a><\/span><\/u> might not be such a good thing.<\/p>\n That is, like Jesse James and other noted “rebels,” Joe Hill died young. (At 36.)<\/em> In one line from from \u201cJoe Hill<\/a>,\u201d Baez sang, \u201c\u2018The Copper Bosses killed you Joe, They shot you Joe\u2019 says I.\u201d That is, in 1914 Utah officials charged Hill with murder, resulting in a trial that became a sensation:<\/p>\n The case turned into a major media event. President Woodrow Wilson<\/a>, Helen Keller<\/a> (the blind and deaf author and fellow-IWW member), the Swedish ambassador and the Swedish public all became involved in a bid for clemency. It generated international union attention, and critics charged that the trial and conviction were unfair. [One later organizer considered] Joe Hill to have been a political prisoner<\/a> who was executed for his political agitation…<\/p><\/blockquote>\n And again if I’m being too subtle, Joe Hill was executed by firing squad at Utah’s Sugar House Prison<\/a> on November 19, 1915. (After a conviction arguably orchestrated by “the copper bosses.”)<\/em><\/p>\n Which could happen to Donald Trump, metaphorically anyway.<\/p>\n Even if impeached and convicted – and in all likelihood ever after he passes from the scene<\/a>, possibly still in disgrace – he likely will still<\/em> <\/strong>remain a hero to some members of “the American working man.” As the original “Joe Hill” song said, \u201cTakes more than guns to kill a man\u2026 \u00a0Says Joe \u2018I didn\u2019t die.’\u201d In the same way it may take more than an impeachment-and-conviction to tarnish the Donald\u2019s reputation with some<\/em> <\/strong>Americans. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n And so the final stanza of\u00a0 \u201cI dreamed I saw Don Trump last night<\/a>\u201d might go like this:<\/p>\n From San Diego up to Maine, In every mine and mill, Where working men defend their rights, It\u2019s there you\u2019ll find Don Trump, It\u2019s there you\u2019ll find Don Trump!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n It could happen!<\/em><\/strong> Meanwhile, the question “How much of this will be ‘deja vu all over again<\/a>?'”<\/p>\n * \u00a0 * \u00a0 * \u00a0 *<\/p>\n Will this be the scene if the House of Representatives impeaches Donald Trump?<\/em><\/p>\n * \u00a0 * \u00a0 * \u00a0 *<\/p>\n The upper image is courtesy of <\/em>Impeachment in the U.S. – Wikipedia<\/a><\/em>.
