Mann<\/a><\/span><span class=\"contribution\"><span class=\"a-color-secondary\">.)\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><span class=\"author notFaded\" data-width=\"165\"><span class=\"contribution\"><span class=\"a-color-secondary\"> Needless to say I was intrigued.\u00a0 And not<strong><em> least<\/em><\/strong> of all because I too look forward to an America without Trump.\u00a0 Something I noted in <a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=8497\">Belated 4th of July meditation<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Whether by vote in 2020 or operation of law in 2024, Trump<strong><em> will<\/em> <\/strong>end up leaving the White House.\u00a0 What happens then?\u00a0 Aside from the cheering, the dancing in\u00a0 the streets, the fireworks and parades, a new nightmare will begin \u2013 for Donald Trump.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And when it might be said &#8211; yet again &#8211; &#8220;<u><span style=\"color: #0b0115;\"><a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1565816435050_349\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ61RydlRdh5kAMoJpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByNXM5bzY5BGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMzBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1565845234\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fsocratic.org%2fquestions%2fwhat-did-president-ford-mean-when-he-said-that-our-long-national-nightmare-is-ov\/RK=0\/RS=FRFdVWdSdbDEAI_ubnqx9AFYuJ0-\" target=\"_blank\" data-668=\"5d547672dbba0\">Our long national nightmare is over<\/a><\/span><\/u>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But first let&#8217;s go back to <a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=6153\" rel=\"bookmark\">Some thoughts on \u201cthe Donald<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0 That post came in December 2018, but looked back at posts &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=6153\" rel=\"bookmark\">from two years ago<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0 That is, two years before 2018, to a post I did in December 20<strong><em>16<\/em><\/strong>, right after Trump&#8217;s election.\u00a0 Among other things there was a prediction in 2016 &#8211; by <a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0geK.QIeFRdmFYAni1pCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1565845641\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fAllan_Lichtman\/RK=0\/RS=afIqTgPHpNDG15NcWZgnu9AUClE-\" target=\"_blank\" data-0cb=\"5d5478095fa1a\">Professor Allan Lichtman<\/a> &#8211; that Trump would be \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=5410\" rel=\"bookmark\"><strong><em>impeached<\/em><\/strong> within two years<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Which hasn&#8217;t happened.\u00a0 He may yet be impeached &#8211; by a Democrat House of Representatives.\u00a0 But he <strong><em>won&#8217;t<\/em> <\/strong>be convicted by the Republican-controlled Senate.\u00a0<em> (It would take 66 votes.)\u00a0<\/em> Which brings us back to the hope offered by\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ7FjGclRdgkIA9RNpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBydDI5cXVuBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwM2BHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1565844294\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.amazon.com%2fOne-Nation-After-Trump-Disillusioned%2fdp%2f1250164052\/RK=0\/RS=p1OAXrbJ4JAO60X24sQHAhZw6LQ-\" target=\"_blank\" data-522=\"5d5472c6a9d07\">One Nation After Trump<\/a>.\u00a0 I just started reading it, but hear are some sample reviews.\u00a0 Like the one from the <a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ7FjGclRdgkIA9RNpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBydDI5cXVuBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwM2BHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1565844294\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.amazon.com%2fOne-Nation-After-Trump-Disillusioned%2fdp%2f1250164052\/RK=0\/RS=p1OAXrbJ4JAO60X24sQHAhZw6LQ-\" target=\"_blank\" data-522=\"5d5472c6a9d07\">Amazon blurb<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Yet if Trump is both a threat to our democracy and a product of its weaknesses, the citizen activism he has inspired is the antidote.\u00a0 The reaction to the crisis created by Trump\u2019s presidency can provide the foundation for an era of democratic renewal and vindicate our long experiment in self-rule.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/d65e02669cc33e906f3fd9be61009f8de49b2642\/0_291_4032_2419\/master\/4032.jpg?width=300&amp;quality=85&amp;auto=format&amp;fit=max&amp;s=0e2689bd6c172bb90802489d10b15e11\" alt=\"Andrea Prada at the march on Washington.\" width=\"230\" height=\"138\" \/>Or consider the conclusion of <a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A2KIbMdAelRd8u8ApnFpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBybGY3bmpvBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMyBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1565846208\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fThe_Guardian\/RK=0\/RS=kuhRy.EgwnkkOU7r3gpCLRWW3Ok-\" target=\"_blank\" data-70a=\"5d547a40cfa60\">The Guardian<\/a>, the British daily newspaper <em>(now online)<\/em>, founded in 1821 as <i>The Manchester Guardian<\/i>.\u00a0 See <a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1565817188954_171\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0geKLtkeVRdYR8ASqBpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1565845988\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.theguardian.com%2fus-news%2f2017%2foct%2f22%2fone-nation-after-trump-review-dionne-ornstein-mann\/RK=0\/RS=IImVx4vHfd5lHrQrMcRF6cp_yjQ-\" target=\"_blank\" data-6c4=\"5d547964f1830\">One Nation After Trump review<\/a>:\u00a0 &#8220;In everything from the <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2017\/jan\/21\/donald-trump-first-24-hours-global-protests-dark-speech-healthcare\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Women\u2019s March on Washington<\/a>\u00a0<em>[at left]<\/em>\u00a0to the ad hoc groups of lawyers who flocked to airports across the country to help <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2017\/jan\/28\/airports-us-immigration-ban-muslim-countries-trump\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">victims of Trump\u2019s travel ban<\/a>, the [authors] see strong evidence that the rational part of the country is finally ready to take back America.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Then there was a <a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1565817586038_162\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A2KLfS7xelRdsBIA2Q1pCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByNXM5bzY5BGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMzBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1565846385\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.nytimes.com%2f2017%2f09%2f26%2fbooks%2freview%2fdionne-ornstein-mann-one-nation-after-trump.html\/RK=0\/RS=2zJ7WHd1rcQefguqlTj8P_Y30qs-\" target=\"_blank\" data-23c=\"5d547af1e34a3\">New York Times<\/a> review, which opined that Trump&#8217;s rise to power. . .<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>. . . reflects the longer-term trends that have shaped the modern Republican Party: the four-decade war on the \u201cliberal media\u201d; the delegitimatization of political opponents; the appeals to racism and xenophobia; the hostility to democratic norms. \u201cTrump is less of an outsider than he seems, and he was building on rather than resisting recent trends within the G.O.P.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And which concluded &#8211; depressingly &#8211; that &#8220;Reading this important book, one gets the nagging sense that even after Trump, Trumpism will persist.&#8221;\u00a0 Let&#8217;s hope not.<\/p>\n<p>Which brings us back to\u00a0&#8220;Cultural elites and Trump.&#8221;\u00a0 That is, before starting to read\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ7FjGclRdgkIA9RNpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBydDI5cXVuBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwM2BHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1565844294\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.amazon.com%2fOne-Nation-After-Trump-Disillusioned%2fdp%2f1250164052\/RK=0\/RS=p1OAXrbJ4JAO60X24sQHAhZw6LQ-\" target=\"_blank\" data-522=\"5d5472c6a9d07\">One Nation After Trump<\/a>, I tried to figure out how Trump got elected in the first place.\u00a0 I initially wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It finally hit me.\u00a0 \u201cWhat\u2019s the attraction with Trump?\u201d\u00a0 The answer?\u00a0 Donald Trump is \u201cAmerica showing its ass.\u201d\u00a0 (Or <u><span style=\"color: #0b0115;\"><a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0PDsBwqEVZdotcAW3dpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBybGY3bmpvBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMyBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1565950379\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fMooning\/RK=0\/RS=ltXEX69U3_e2CH69yV.B1PXWo54-\" target=\"_blank\" data-7f5=\"5d56112b71c88\">mooning<\/a><\/span><\/u>, to put it more politely.)\u00a0 Put another way, Trump \u201crepresents\u201d \u2013 and I use the term loosely \u2013 a certain segment of American society which now chooses to thumb its nose at \u2013 or more precisely \u201cmoon\u201d \u2013 both the rest of the world and that \u201c<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1563495812482_457\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ61OVDTFd9RYAx35pCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByNXM5bzY5BGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMzBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1563524630\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fElite\/RK=0\/RS=B0oCxYvM5l0jOg8LKnOi5PZWg1I-\" target=\"_blank\" data-a90=\"5d310d963abf4\">cultural elite<\/a>\u201d part of American society that it hates so much.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unilad.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/trump-man-fb-702x369.jpg\" alt=\"President Trump Fat Shaming Supporter Rally\" width=\"255\" height=\"134\" \/>Which got support in articles like\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ6R9HCjFdjSkARCFpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1563523784\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fthebulwark.com%2fsend-her-back-send-her-back%2f\/RK=0\/RS=JSHaR_TusEe3pfq2kfRcLUQWLWA-\" target=\"_blank\" data-127=\"5d310a4827edf\">Send Her Back! Send Her Back! \u2013 The Bulwark<\/a>.\u00a0 It noted &#8220;acts of deliberate transgression against what many Trump supporters have come to view as the supposedly stifling ethics of our cultural elites,&#8221; <strong><em>and<\/em><\/strong> sending \u201dthose damn media types into a tizzy.\u201d\u00a0 Also that his verbal attacks &#8211; though not including the one where he &#8220;<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1565979006750_193\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrEzdx.8VZd7b4A2VBpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBybGY3bmpvBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMyBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1566007806\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.unilad.co.uk%2fnews%2fdonald-trump-fat-shamed-one-of-his-own-supporters%2f\/RK=0\/RS=mGYPYVD2DJbNZa89YulQ_u5Id1U-\" target=\"_blank\" data-9fb=\"5d56f17e8700c\">fat shamed his own supporter<\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em>&#8221; &#8211; are just another &#8220;handy weapon for triggering the pearl-clutching libs.&#8221;\u00a0 See also <a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1563495360349_559\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrEzezRCzFdFZUAOAhpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByZnU4cmNpBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwM5BHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1563524178\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.usatoday.com%2fstory%2fopinion%2f2019%2f01%2f15%2fglenn-reynolds-class-warfare-elites-explains-world-conflicts-trump-column%2f2569252002%2f\/RK=0\/RS=pgwKkXqf8J1dUucQjbM2Xn94eEw-\" target=\"_blank\" data-fa2=\"5d310bd234ed5\">Class warfare between workers and elites explains Trump<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>What\u2019s happening in America is an echo of what\u2019s happening in democracies around the world, and it\u2019s not happening because of Trump.\u00a0 Trump is the symptom of a ruling class that many of the ruled no longer see as serving their interest, and the anti-Trump response is mostly the angry backlash of that class as it sees its position, its perquisites\u00a0and &#8211; perhaps especially &#8211; its self-importance threatened.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Which definitely presents a problem for those of us yearning for &#8220;the America of past years.&#8221;\u00a0 And especially of past presidents, none of whom now seem so bad.\u00a0 But now:\u00a0 Do you see the irony?\u00a0 Of Liberals and Independents trying to &#8220;go back in time,&#8221; while today&#8217;s &#8220;Conservatives&#8221; seem bent on tearing out all of America&#8217;s democratic institutions <a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ7FYFx1ZdIukAIKtpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1565996934\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fnotesironbound.blogspot.com%2f2015%2f11%2fsadly-hatred-against-syrian-refugees-is.html\/RK=0\/RS=uDFTanvpr2f5TVNFFdUBT3Kk_K4-\" target=\"_blank\" data-f0b=\"5d56c7063577d\">root and branch<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>But perhaps all is not lost.\u00a0 One thing that <u><span style=\"color: #0b0115;\"><a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ7FjGclRdgkIA9RNpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBydDI5cXVuBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwM2BHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1565844294\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.amazon.com%2fOne-Nation-After-Trump-Disillusioned%2fdp%2f1250164052\/RK=0\/RS=p1OAXrbJ4JAO60X24sQHAhZw6LQ-\" target=\"_blank\" data-522=\"5d5472c6a9d07\">One Nation<\/a><\/span><\/u> pointed out &#8211; early on &#8211; was how slim the margin of victory was.\u00a0 Aside from losing the popular vote by 2.9 million, &#8220;Trump&#8217;s victory was a very close-run thing &#8211; a matter of 77,744 votes in three crucial states.&#8221;\u00a0 His win was also &#8220;enabled&#8221; by\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0geKYncQVddIcYAxQRpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBybGY3bmpvBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMyBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1566028380\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.huffpost.com%2fentry%2fjames-comey-donald-trump-2016-election_n_5ca3a071e4b0c32979613e17\/RK=0\/RS=iYKhFc6Eyi4tNtVfWH.zqpfSeyw-\" target=\"_blank\" data-f3c=\"5d5741dca799b\">James Comey reopening a probe into Hillary&#8217;s use of a private server while secretary of state<\/a>,<strong><em> and<\/em><\/strong> by Russian interference in addition to<b> <\/b><a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrEwhGKQlddXtQA.A9pCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1566028554\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2f2016_Democratic_National_Committee_email_leak\/RK=0\/RS=11Lfn3adzL3F5dXG7VcBSb9ouso-\" target=\"_blank\" data-234=\"5d57428aeeb50\">hacked emails from the Democratic National Committee<\/a>. <em>(Likely by <strong>Russian<\/strong> hackers.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Yet despite all that help this &#8220;monumental shift in the nature of the nation&#8217;s political leadership was enabled by relatively modest shifts in the electorate.&#8221;\u00a0 And by voters rejecting Hillary.<\/p>\n<p>Some good news? Defined by the Cambridge Dictionary, the &#8216;elite&#8217; are &#8216;those people or organizations that are considered the best or most powerful compared to others of a similar type.'&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-elm-loc=\"9\"><em>Or, a &#8220;relatively small, loosely connected group of individuals who dominate American policy making. It\u2019s a new variation of an old-fashioned populism that is anti-intellectual and anti-expert.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Trump and his family may be mining this anti-elite anger, but they are, of course, preposterously upscale, living in Trump Tower, attending expensive private schools, flying about in private jets (now with in-flight Secret Service) and dining in five-star restaurants&#8230; <\/em><em>Republicans are benefitting from the cultural resentment of their non-elite electorate. They also aren\u2019t proposing anything that could make life better for the people who actually live in small towns or in &#8216;flyover&#8217; states.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">* \u00a0 * \u00a0 * \u00a0 *<\/p>\n<p><em>My own thoughts:\u00a0 I defined the &#8220;elite&#8221; as that &#8220;portion of American society that has pretty much ruled America during the latter half of the 20th century, and the 21st century as well, up to Election Day, 2016.\u00a0 Since the end of World War II, the rest of the world has looked at America as that &#8216;city on a hill&#8217; it has claimed to be since the beginning.\u00a0 And America has responded \u2013 by and large \u2013 by accepting the mantle of world leadership.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;And because America is a land of such promise, people from other countries keep trying to come here. But \u2013 by and large \u2013 they are no longer white, English-speaking and mostly European. Which frightens a large segment of American society.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><i>&#8220;Aside from that the mantle of world leadership is heavy. It means not going off half-cocked. It means being responsible, and thinking through what we say and do. And many Americans seem to think we should act more like Russia, imposing our will on the rest of the world by sheer force.
