to\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrE19BAr6hc6o4A_x1pCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1554587584\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fOscar_Wilde\/RK=0\/RS=nbCay53zKwH3l6BuXh.VE200Tgc-\" target=\"_blank\" data-097=\"5ca8af40ee2f6\">Oscar Wilde<\/a>&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">* \u00a0 * \u00a0 * \u00a0 *<\/p>\n<p>I just finished reading the January\/February 2019 <a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A2KLfSTUrqhcSQwA5BppCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1554587477\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fNational_Geographic_%28magazine%29\/RK=0\/RS=IkUjQ.cXB0QZOR8IwFP6vWqdNgY-\" target=\"_blank\" data-9d9=\"5ca8aed570402\">National Geographic<\/a> magazine.\u00a0 I came across this comment from <a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrE19BAr6hc6o4A_x1pCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1554587584\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fOscar_Wilde\/RK=0\/RS=nbCay53zKwH3l6BuXh.VE200Tgc-\" target=\"_blank\" data-097=\"5ca8af40ee2f6\">Oscar Wilde<\/a>, about Americans &#8211; and their unique hero-worship.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/8\/89\/Robert_Ford_shooting_Jesse_James.jpg\" width=\"289\" height=\"193\" \/>Wilde was visiting America &#8211; specifically, St. Joseph, Missouri &#8211; a week after <a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A2KLfSxAsKhcLaIAtTJpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1554587840\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fJesse_james\/RK=0\/RS=__Y4h44HwDZn7ipOEci1ELwMybk-\" target=\"_blank\" data-a62=\"5ca8b040a6594\">Jesse James<\/a> was killed.\u00a0<em> (By<b>\u00a0<\/b>the &#8220;<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ7FQesahcq8wA_kdpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByNXM5bzY5BGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMzBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1554588062\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fThe_Assassination_of_Jesse_James_by_the_Coward_Robert_Ford\/RK=0\/RS=90cNSZK8pR6qrMT0IQM7ERkdnmw-\" target=\"_blank\" data-f6f=\"5ca8b11ecea0b\">coward Robert Ford<\/a>,&#8221; illustrated at right.)\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>Wilde thus &#8220;witnessed firsthand the mad clamor for relics of the outlaw at an auction of Jesse&#8217;s household belongings.&#8221;\u00a0 That led him to observe: <strong><em>&#8220;Americans are certainly great hero-worshipers, and always take their heroes from the criminal classes.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>(Not that has anything to do with current events&#8230;) \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That led me to <a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1554463953493_367\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A2KIbZzQPKdcimUAN6lpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByMHZ0NG9yBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwM3BHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1554492752\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.breakingcharactermagazine.com%2foscar-wilde-america%2f\/RK=0\/RS=48YDX1QFYqgPpZnSpU3xb2UsnXQ-\" target=\"_blank\" data-b76=\"5ca73cd0bc59e\">Oscar Wilde in America &#8211; Breaking Character<\/a>.\u00a0 I wanted to verify the National Geographic quote, and maybe get some additional background.\u00a0 Which led me to this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In Leadville, Colorado he was winched down into the depths of a silver mine and delivered a lecture to the miners on the ethics of art.\u00a0 \u201cI read them passages from the autobiography of <a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ7FvlP6dcu8oAkeppCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1554493541\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fBenvenuto_Cellini\/RK=0\/RS=6utRdl7UFj7Kxx2Uu0.P661nCbo-\" target=\"_blank\" data-ea1=\"5ca73fe5cf9af\">Benvenuto Cellini<\/a> and they seemed much delighted,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201c[But] I was reproved by my hearers for not having brought [Cellini] with me.\u00a0 I explained that he had been dead for some little time which elicited the enquiry,<strong> \u2018Who shot him?\u2019<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It turns out that &#8220;some little time&#8221; was over 300 years.\u00a0 That is,\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ7FvlP6dcu8oAkeppCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1554493541\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fBenvenuto_Cellini\/RK=0\/RS=6utRdl7UFj7Kxx2Uu0.P661nCbo-\" target=\"_blank\" data-ea1=\"5ca73fe5cf9af\">Cellini<\/a> (1500-1571)\u00a0was an &#8220;Italian <a title=\"Goldsmith\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Goldsmith\">goldsmith<\/a>, sculptor, <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Draftsman\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Draftsman\">draftsman<\/a>, soldier, musician, and artist.&#8221;\u00a0 <em>(He also wrote the &#8220;famous autobiography&#8221; that Wilde read to the Colorado miners.)\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>And in turns out that nobody\u00a0<strong><em>shot<\/em><\/strong> Cellini&#8230;\u00a0 That is, despite his various escapades &#8211; sexual and otherwise, described further below &#8211; he lived to a &#8220;ripe old age.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve written about Wilde before in <a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=350\" rel=\"bookmark\">Oscar Wilde and \u201cgross indecencies<\/a>,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=6641\" rel=\"bookmark\">On Roy Moore \u2013 and Oscar Wilde<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=6940\" rel=\"bookmark\">Imitation Game\u201d \u2013 Revisited<\/a>.\u00a0 And when I started work on this blog-post, I planned to review those past posts on Wilde.\u00a0 I also planned to write more about Americans today, <em><a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrE1xs5f6pcfgsAryppCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBydWNmY2MwBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwM0BHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1554706362\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fdictionary.cambridge.org%2fdictionary%2fenglish%2fvis-a-vis\/RK=0\/RS=tnk7_02rqJDhdOPSQZGMrk1Njv0-\" target=\"_blank\" data-0b7=\"5caa7f3a819b2\">VIS-\u00c0-VIS<\/a><\/em> their habit of &#8220;always tak[ing] their heroes from the criminal classes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But as it turns out, <a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ7FvlP6dcu8oAkeppCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1554493541\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fBenvenuto_Cellini\/RK=0\/RS=6utRdl7UFj7Kxx2Uu0.P661nCbo-\" target=\"_blank\" data-ea1=\"5ca73fe5cf9af\">Cellini<\/a> was <strong><em>way<\/em><\/strong> more interesting&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/e\/e9\/Persee-florence.jpg\/240px-Persee-florence.jpg\" width=\"141\" height=\"275\" \/>For one thing, he was &#8220;one of the most important artists of\u00a0<a title=\"Mannerism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mannerism\">Mannerism<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0<em> (Which includes\u00a0a variety of approaches &#8220;associated with artists such as\u00a0<a title=\"Leonardo da Vinci\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leonardo_da_Vinci\">Leonardo da Vinci<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Raphael\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Raphael\">Raphael<\/a>, and early\u00a0<a title=\"Michelangelo\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michelangelo\">Michelangelo<\/a>.\u00a0 Where High Renaissance art emphasizes proportion, balance, and ideal beauty, Mannerism exaggerates such qualities, often resulting in compositions that are asymmetrical or unnaturally elegant.&#8221;)\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>And he&#8217;s &#8220;remembered for his skill in making pieces such as the\u00a0<i><a title=\"Cellini Salt Cellar\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cellini_Salt_Cellar\">Cellini Salt Cellar<\/a><\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i><a title=\"Perseus with the Head of Medusa\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Perseus_with_the_Head_of_Medusa\">Perseus with the Head of Medusa<\/a><\/i>.&#8221;\u00a0<em> (Seen at left.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But that&#8217;s not the interesting part.\u00a0 The interesting part involved Cellini&#8217;s &#8220;active social life,&#8221; if not his frequent <a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrE1xpCeKpcUZcAmbJpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByNXM5bzY5BGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMzBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1554704578\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.dictionary.com%2fbrowse%2frun-in\/RK=0\/RS=ANUy9C6KyW_Lp9wOmFhgrEOzKoc-\" target=\"_blank\" data-45d=\"5caa78429f2c3\">run-ins<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For example, he boasted in his memoirs of killing five people.\u00a0 There may have been more but no one knows for sure:\u00a0 He never got convicted.\u00a0 <em>(He got pardons from various church officials, including popes.)\u00a0<\/em> But he<strong><em> did<\/em><\/strong> have to bounce around a lot:\u00a0 From Rome to\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A2KIbMo4dqpcf94AQ2NpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBybGY3bmpvBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMyBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1554704057\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fFlorence\/RK=0\/RS=pJK1hj.RR.FdJtnzCedOnI_td44-\" target=\"_blank\" data-5db=\"5caa763965d27\">Florence<\/a> to France, back to Florence, then to Venice, and so on.<\/p>\n<p>For an example of <strong><em>that<\/em><\/strong> <em>(and other things)<\/em>:\u00a0 In 1548 &#8211; he was 48 or so <em>(being born in 1500 helps)<\/em> &#8211; a woman in <a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A2KIbMo4dqpcf94AQ2NpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBybGY3bmpvBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMyBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1554704057\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fFlorence\/RK=0\/RS=pJK1hj.RR.FdJtnzCedOnI_td44-\" target=\"_blank\" data-5db=\"5caa763965d27\">Florence<\/a> accused Cellini of <a title=\"Sodomy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sodomy\">sodomizing<\/a> her son, Vincenzo.\u00a0 To escape the charge he fled to Venice.\u00a0 \u201cThis was not the first, nor the last time, that Cellini was implicated for\u00a0<a title=\"Sodomy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sodomy\">sodomy<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And this \u2013 Wikipedia noted \u2013 illustrated his strong\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Homosexual\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Homosexual\">homosexual<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Bisexual\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bisexual\">bisexual<\/a>\u00a0tendencies;<em> (\u201conce with a woman and at least three times with men during his life\u201d)<\/em>.\u00a0 As for penalties:\u00a0 As a young man\u00a0\u201che was sentenced to pay 12 staia<em> (bushels)<\/em> of flour in 1523 for relations with another young man\u2026\u00a0 Meanwhile, in Paris a former model and lover brought charges against him of using her \u2018after the Italian fashion\u2019<em> (i.e. sodomy)<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 Later still, in 1556 <em>(<strong>at<\/strong>\u00a0age 56)<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Cellini\u2019s apprentice \u2026 Montepulciano accused his mentor of having sodomised him many times while \u201ckeeping him for five years in his bed as a wife.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0This time<\/strong>\u00a0the penalty was a hefty fifty golden\u00a0<a title=\"Italian scudo\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Italian_scudo\">scudi<\/a>\u00a0fine, and four years of prison, remitted to four years of\u00a0<a title=\"House arrest\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/House_arrest\">house arrest<\/a>\u00a0thanks to the intercession of the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Medici\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Medici\">Medicis<\/a>.\u00a0 In a public altercation before Duke\u00a0<a title=\"Cosimo I de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cosimo_I_de%27_Medici,_Grand_Duke_of_Tuscany\">Cosimo<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Bartolomeo Bandinelli\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bartolomeo_Bandinelli\">Bandinelli<\/a>* had called out to him\u00a0Sta cheto, soddomitaccio!\u00a0 (Shut up, you filthy sodomite!)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Cellini described this as an \u201catrocious insult,\u201d and tried to laugh it off.<\/p>\n<p>But he wasn&#8217;t done.\u00a0 <em>(For one thing, he outlived\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Bartolomeo Bandinelli\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bartolomeo_Bandinelli\">Bandinelli<\/a> by 11 years.)<\/em>\u00a0 In 1562 &#8211; after briefly trying a &#8220;clerical career&#8221; &#8211; he married a servant, with whom he claimed to have five children.\u00a0 In 1563 he was named a member of the &#8220;prestigious <a title=\"Accademia delle Arti del Disegno\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Accademia_delle_Arti_del_Disegno\">Accademia delle Arti del Disegno<\/a> of <a title=\"Florence\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Florence\">Florence<\/a>, founded by the Duke <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Cosimo I de' Medici\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cosimo_I_de%27_Medici\">Cosimo I de&#8217; Medici<\/a> \u2026 under the influence of the architect <a title=\"Giorgio Vasari\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Giorgio_Vasari\">Giorgio Vasari<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So aside from being a talented artist, he knew how to make some pretty influential friends.<\/p>\n<p>And finally, when he died in\u00a0<a title=\"Florence\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Florence\">Florence<\/a>\u00a0in 1571 he was &#8220;buried with great pomp in the church of the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Basilica della Santissima Annunziata di Firenze\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Basilica_della_Santissima_Annunziata_di_Firenze\">Santissima Annunziata<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0 As to what <strong><em>caused<\/em><\/strong> his death, some modern readers may think that was a result of his lifelong various escapades, sexual and otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>But the fact is that despite all those turmoils, run-ins and escapades, he lived to the ripe old age of 71.\u00a0 And this was at a time when the average life expectancy was <strong><em>30 to 40 years<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 <em>(See for example <a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1554466001218_154\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrE1xbRRKdcm6QALzZpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1554494801\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.answers.com%2fQ%2fWhat_was_life_expectancy_in_the_1500s\/RK=0\/RS=fkYb_cxRTMotc3nUOj57zgLOj9Y-\" target=\"_blank\" data-0ad=\"5ca744d1ae53a\">What was life expectancy in the 1500s \u2013 answers.com<\/a>,\u00a0and\/or\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1554466001218_160\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrE1xbRRKdcm6QAMDZpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBybGY3bmpvBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMyBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1554494801\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.verywellhealth.com%2flongevity-throughout-history-2224054\/RK=0\/RS=WnB.L4qF1CPGBCp6s9CP4seQuWM-\" target=\"_blank\" data-0ad=\"5ca744d1ae67d\">Life Expectancy From Prehistory to Today<\/a>.)\u00a0 <\/em>And from all this we might glean two points of note:\u00a0 For one thing,<em> &#8220;I&#8217;m sure there&#8217;s an <a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0geJaTIfapcDaEA1iZpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1554705992\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fObject_lesson\/RK=0\/RS=tr8GB7FptrBsWd89LYJL4mcJGFs-\" target=\"_blank\" data-b37=\"5caa7dc8e39df\">object lesson<\/a> here, but darned if I can figure out what.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em> For another:<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>Who says history can&#8217;t be fascinating?<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">* \u00a0 * \u00a0 * \u00a0 *<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.moviepostermem.com\/images\/products\/e003129e-d4df-4fe8-aac0-0c9702b67e82.jpg\" width=\"528\" height=\"394\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>On the other hand &#8211;
