That can include <a title=\"Christian prayer\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christian_prayer\">prayer<\/a>, <a title=\"Penance\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Penance\">penance<\/a>, &#8220;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Repentance (theology)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Repentance_(theology)\">repentance<\/a>\u00a0of sins,\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Almsgiving\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Almsgiving\">almsgiving<\/a>, and\u00a0<a title=\"Asceticism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Asceticism\">self-denial<\/a>.\u201d And for many people, that means giving up something. On the other hand, some people <strong><em>add<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>a discipline &#8220;that would add to my spiritual life.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0<em>(See\u00a0<a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/www.episcopalcafe.com\/lenten_disciplines_spiritual_exercises_or_ego_trip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url noopener\">Lenten disciplines: spiritual exercises or ego trip<\/a>?) <\/em>Like last year for Lent I gave up yelling \u201cHang the sonofabitch!\u201d at every mention of Donald Trump. This year I\u2019ll do the same thing. For one thing, it ended up netting the Easter-day <a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A2KLfS4xzIpcDwUAWV5pCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1552628914\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.episcopalchurch.org%2funited-thank-offering\/RK=0\/RS=DZn0gA3iiesByGNUk.C0kmrSyVQ-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-137=\"5c8acc322f1cc\">United Thank Offering<\/a>\u00a0a little over $25 in penalties.\u00a0<em> (At 25 cents a pop.)\u00a0<\/em> But this year I felt the need to add something else. To &#8220;<strong><em>add<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>a discipline,&#8221; etc.<\/p>\n<p>So for this Lent I&#8217;ll try to add &#8211; to prepare &#8211; a reasoned, thoughtful <a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrC0SYjJIlcsEQArgJpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByMHZ0NG9yBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwM3BHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1552520356\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fTreatise\/RK=0\/RS=wIwYGXx379CWtj.2FuPddGccR6U-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-a43=\"5c892424088b8\">treatise<\/a> on <strong><em>why<\/em><\/strong> I think a Trump presidency will be a constitutional crisis on par with <a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0geKaAWppFcuy4AGl1pCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1553077910\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fWatergate_scandal\/RK=0\/RS=lNhJrIPPluYxVfqAGPPiCKYgy1M-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-289=\"5c91a616d0792\">Watergate<\/a>, though not yet on par with the Civil War.<em>\u00a0 (Not yet.) <\/em>Beyond that, for this Lent I will try mightily to understand why some Americans still support him, without saying, <strong><em>&#8220;What are you, a bunch of dumbasses?&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>That&#8217;s<\/em> <\/strong>going to be the hard part&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>So hard in fact that it&#8217;s going to take<strong><em> so<\/em> <\/strong>much time I won&#8217;t be able to do a new post in a reasonable time after the last one.\u00a0<em> (From March 5,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=8082\">Didn\u2019t we try this \u201cWall\u201d thing before<\/a>?<\/em><em>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So for the time being, I offer up this <a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1552613639899_154\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ61cJAYtcmNgAG_VpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByNXM5bzY5BGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMzBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1552642442\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.dictionary.com%2fbrowse%2fin-betweener\/RK=0\/RS=OXsj_nBTi7ys3yisuNebhFGTewE-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-56a=\"5c8b010a2daad\">in-betweener<\/a>.\u00a0 It&#8217;s\u00a0about an early adventure I had back a few years ago.\u00a0 <em>(2013 or so.)\u00a0<\/em> \u00a0In turn,<strong><em> it<\/em><\/strong> will be related to the new book I&#8217;ll be doing, tentatively titled &#8220;My adventures in old age.&#8221; \u00a0<em> (See for example,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=8028\">On Brinkley, Clooney, and aging gracefully<\/a>, which spoke in part of <a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0geJaWE4G1cX9IAiXxpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBydWNmY2MwBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwM0BHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1550733573\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.nytimes.com%2f2010%2f01%2f08%2fus%2f08aging.html\/RK=0\/RS=ln4j_9XEf6jvwfIfQlvnhwZ9Quo-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-e55=\"5c6de08550e97\">Seeing Old Age as a Never-Ending Adventure<\/a>.)<\/em>\u00a0 That post in turn cited an online article, <a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1550674148007_282\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A2KLfR7jaG1cZAIAPvxpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBydWNmY2MwBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwM0BHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1550702947\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.huffingtonpost.com%2f2014%2f02%2f27%2faging-quotes-_n_4815987.html\/RK=0\/RS=x3bZCyxQzY.BL6nx3bNS96gSFR4-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-8db=\"5c6d68e3ab57e\">11 Smart Things About Getting Older<\/a>, and an early post <a href=\"http:\/\/dorscribe.com\/?p=5415\" rel=\"bookmark\">I pity the fool<\/a><em>.\u00a0 (Where I said, \u201cI pity the fool who doesn\u2019t \u2026\u00a0<strong><a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/idioms.thefreedictionary.com\/push+the+envelope\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url noopener\">push the envelope<\/a><\/strong>, even at the advance stage of his life.\u201d)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/i1177.photobucket.com\/albums\/x350\/jbpermar\/Canoe%20trip%202014\/IMG_4332_zps47e076b9.jpg\" alt=\"November 10, 2014 photo IMG_4332_zps47e076b9.jpg\" width=\"207\" height=\"155\" \/>So, back to my early-on kayaking adventure&#8230;\u00a0 Here\u2019s what happened.\u00a0 I was on the way back from Biloxi and a canoe trip on <a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ6yfMrI5cmfwAhippCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1552883020\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fLake_Pontchartrain\/RK=0\/RS=NNEBkaq3GIXUaGNPZoV26oft5rc-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-6ef=\"5c8eaccc8aa89\">Lake Pontchartrain<\/a>.\u00a0<em> (Which led the following year to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=599\" rel=\"bookmark\">On canoeing 12 miles offshore<\/a>, and the &#8220;siesta-at-sea&#8221; image at left.)\u00a0 <\/em>So on the way back &#8211; in 2013 &#8211; I stopped at an Academy sporting goods store and found a reasonably-priced eight-foot kayak for a mere $149.\u00a0 That in turn led to me adding kayaking to my weekly exercise routine.<\/p>\n<p>I did two early \u201cvoyages\u201d without mishap, and figured I had this kayaking stuff down pat.\u00a0 <em>(Except for the part about getting in and out, gracefully or otherwise.)\u00a0 <\/em>On my third kayaking venture, while trying to \u201cmount\u201d the kayak at the <a class=\" td-hu\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/aol\/image;_ylt=AwrJ7J_0zo9cjJYAJbBpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByMDgyYjJiBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMyBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzYw--?q=lake+kedron+peachtree+city+ga&amp;v_t=comsearch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lake Kedron<\/a>\u00a0boat ramp, the thing tipped over a bit too far.\u00a0 As a result, what <strong><em>seemed<\/em> <\/strong>like a small quantity of water got into the kayak.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t want to go through the trouble of looking ridiculous or clumsy &#8211; getting out of the kayak and then back in &#8211; so I figured, &#8220;No problem, I\u2019ll just put up with the water sloshing around the &#8216;<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0PDsBvx1o9cx1cA8TNpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBydWNmY2MwBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwM0BHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1552959345\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fBilge\/RK=0\/RS=F94SCcdS5A12Mdc0valrCVZk1sM-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-853=\"5c8fd6f1d9524\">bilges<\/a>&#8216; until I finish up, in an hour or so.&#8221;\u00a0 So I paddled down to the other end of the lake and was heading back home, after 45 minutes or so.\u00a0 Just then I noticed what seemed to be a bit more water than I remembered sloshing around the seat.<\/p>\n<p>I kept on paddling along, but my thoughts then turned to the water that had been left over after my prior canoe voyages &#8211; for example,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=4692\" rel=\"bookmark\">\u201cNaked lady on the Yukon<\/a>,&#8221; which came a bit later &#8211;\u00a0and how I&#8217;d been able to get<strong><em> that<\/em><\/strong> water out.\u00a0 Then, while still paddling, I glanced back &#8211; a bit &#8211; and noticed that the back end of the kayak <em>seemed<\/em> to be much lower than the front.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>That&#8217;s<\/em> <\/strong>when I discovered a big difference between a kayak and a canoe.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t get a really good view because a kayak is kind of awkward to move around in, and in fact is quite \u201csensitive.\u201d\u00a0<em> (Not to say \u201ctippy.\u201d)\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0So I couldn&#8217;t do a good check on the back-end of the kayak, which in turn &#8211; eventually &#8211; led to this thought:\u00a0 &#8220;You know, I\u2019ll bet there\u2019s a drain plug somewhere on this craft.\u00a0 I wonder where it is?\u00a0 I\u2019ll have to check the manual when I get back.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/6\/6e\/St%C3%B6wer_Titanic.jpg\" alt=\"&quot;Untergang der Titanic&quot;, a painting showing a big ship sinking with survivors in the water and boats\" width=\"250\" height=\"171\" \/>Then, paddling around a bend in the lake, I noticed that the ol\u2019 kayak was <strong><em>really<\/em><\/strong> getting sluggish and hard to maneuver.\u00a0 So \u2013 discretion being the better part of valor \u2013 I reluctantly started heading to the mucky, muddy shoreline, figuring I\u2019d better stop and get this stupid water out.\u00a0 But it was too late.\u00a0 I hadn\u2019t made much progress toward the shore when \u2013 in a kind of reverse-<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrE19iw0o9cVHkAXwZpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1552958256\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fRMS_Titanic\/RK=0\/RS=bfqDe3EMVyf25Tevpv3JWNgvEW8-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-851=\"5c8fd2b0ce578\">Titanic<\/a> <strong><em><a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A2KLfR2a049cVnMAhGBpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBydWNmY2MwBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwM0BHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1552958491\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.writersdigest.com%2fonline-editor%2fwhat-is-a-denouement\/RK=0\/RS=hgNwM74GyOUowVqKSGOIQIwBsr8-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bfa=\"5c8fd39b05500\">denouement<\/a><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 the aft-end started sinking faster than I could paddle, and I found myself and my trusty craft sinking into Lake Kedron.<\/p>\n<p>In seconds I found myself <strong><em>out<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>the back of the boat, which by now had filled with water.\u00a0 I tried to hold on to the two-ended paddle, and push the stupid thing to shore.\u00a0 <em>(Thinking all the while, &#8220;What?\u00a0 This thing will never sink.\u00a0 It\u2019s supposed to be freakin&#8217; unsinkable!!!&#8221;<\/em>) I also tried to find the cheap deck-shoes I&#8217;d had on, the shoes I had bought just last week, somewhere still inside the boat. <em>(Knowing from past experience what it\u2019s like to come ashore in\u00a0muck and mire, in bare feet.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I found the shoes but then had to get them on my feet, while holding the paddle and kayak, <strong><em>and<\/em> <\/strong>trying to push it ashore. Aside from all that, I had weights on my wrists; I wanted to get more bang for my exercise buck, as it were.<em>\u00a0(See r<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A2KIbZw01I9cROQATiZpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1552958644\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.emedicinehealth.com%2fstrength_training%2farticle_em.htm\/RK=0\/RS=Bym8JKU7fEC4KxLoUj_XWgILd0s-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-8d6=\"5c8fd434deb6e\">esistance training<\/a>.)<\/em> <strong><em>Plus<\/em><\/strong> I kept checking for my car keys, in my upper left shirt pocket.<em> (Where I figured they\u2019d never get wet.)<\/em> And that&#8217;s not to mention the <a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ6R.81I9cXnUA8DppCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1552958780\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.target.com%2fs%2fipod%2bshuffle\/RK=0\/RS=WLJy15Rh4n_FLd7oPzTwuMDubM4-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bbb=\"5c8fd4bcbf1c1\">Ipod Shuffle<\/a> I&#8217;d also stuck in the upper right shirt pocket, for use in case I got bored paddling and needed some music. <em>(Again, figuring that in my shirt pocket it\u2019d <strong>never<\/strong> get wet.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>To make a long story short, I finally made it to the mucky, mirey shore, and not-gracefully-at-all managed to heave the thing up far enough on shore to get what seemed like <em><strong>tons<\/strong><\/em> of water out. And that\u2019s when I noticed &#8211; there, at the very back of the kayak &#8211; the drain plug that only moments before I\u2019d been wondering about.
