(Of \u00a0\u201cswamp water,\u201d while hiding from <a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrE1.BvkZ9chocACSdpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBybGY3bmpvBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMyBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1553990127\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fidioms.thefreedictionary.com%2fJohnny%2bLaw\/RK=0\/RS=FNkHT0sshhSzkG5l2ntRnHafGX0-\" target=\"_blank\" data-415=\"5c9f916f87719\">John Law<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0<a class=\"find\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Okefenokee_Swamp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">Okefenokee<\/a>.)\u00a0 As Walter [kneels], the viewer can see a grinning <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cottonmouthsnake.org\/\">cottonmouth<\/a> off to his right. \u00a0(The viewer\u2019s left.) \u00a0The grinning cottonmouth then proceeds to bite him \u201cright on the cheek.\u201d\u00a0 <strong><em>I\u2019ve been fascinated ever since\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Part of that fascination\u00a0also came from the old\u00a0<a class=\"find\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pogo_(comic_strip)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">Pogo<\/a>\u00a0comic strip.\u00a0<em> (It ran from 1949 to 1975.)\u00a0<\/em> It starred Pogo Possum, was set in the <a title=\"Okefenokee Swamp\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Okefenokee_Swamp\">Okefenokee<\/a>, and featured \u201csocial and political <a title=\"Satire\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Satire\">satire <\/a>through the adventures of its <a title=\"Anthropomorphism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anthropomorphism\">anthropomorphic<\/a> <a title=\"Funny animal\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Funny_animal\">funny animal<\/a> characters:\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><i>Pogo<\/i><\/strong> is set in the <a title=\"Georgia (U.S. state)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Georgia_(U.S._state)\">Georgia<\/a> section of the Okefenokee Swamp;\u00a0 <a title=\"Fort Mudge, Georgia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fort_Mudge,_Georgia\">Fort Mudge<\/a> and <a title=\"Waycross, Georgia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Waycross,_Georgia\">Waycross<\/a> are occasionally mentioned. \u00a0The characters live, for the most part, in hollow trees amidst lushly rendered backdrops of North American wetlands, bayous, lagoons and backwoods.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Also, note that my original &#8220;Pogo&#8221; post was<strong><em> very<\/em><\/strong> long.\u00a0 It clocked in at over 1,600 words in the main text, and over 2,000 words including the notes.\u00a0 Since then I&#8217;ve cut down on blog-post wordage, mostly because the average reader has the attention span of a gerbil.\u00a0 <em>(You could\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A2KLfR5JbJ9c0nYAx15pCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBybGY3bmpvBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMyBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1553980617\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fGoogle_%28verb%29\/RK=0\/RS=dgGmHfxkYGBhyiyknzQriELqoZA-\" target=\"_blank\" data-fa9=\"5c9f6c49eaf0a\">Google<\/a><\/em><em> &#8220;ideal number of words for a blog post.&#8221;\u00a0 One site &#8211; <a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1553894872260_667\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0geK.bYjZ5cQjsAmXVpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1553923672\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.forbes.com%2fsites%2fjohnrampton%2f2014%2f04%2f04%2fhow-long-should-my-blog-post-be%2f\/RK=0\/RS=VwseTlfJf1sz4N061Us.tXldhNs-\" target=\"_blank\" data-26f=\"5c9e8dd8c77b9\">Forbes<\/a> &#8211; said that for one thing, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nngroup.com\/articles\/how-little-do-users-read\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:http:\/\/www.nngroup.com\/articles\/how-little-do-users-read\/\">most people only read between 20% to 28% of a post<\/a>&#8221; anyway&#8230;)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/1445698042386-183x300.jpg\" alt=\"1445698042386\" width=\"163\" height=\"267\" \/>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=6209\" rel=\"bookmark\">Revisited<\/a>&#8221;\u00a0noted my <strong><em>second<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>fun<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>trip into the <a class=\"find\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Okefenokee_Swamp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">Okefenokee<\/a>, from the <a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ61fzbJ9cpFIA1vJpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByNXM5bzY5BGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMzBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1553980788\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.n-georgia.com%2fokefenokee-nwr-entrances.html\/RK=0\/RS=7Sw7ZSibAI56cXu4U7vxcf_3n4c-\" target=\"_blank\" data-2b4=\"5c9f6cf44c928\"><strong><em>west<\/em> <\/strong>entrance into the Okefenokee<\/a> east of<b> <\/b><a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrEzeZUbZ9c35cAFndpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByNXM5bzY5BGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMzBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1553980884\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fFargo%2c_Georgia\/RK=0\/RS=Nn3QHh1L_a5NgWS5fKI27U4ymdU-\" target=\"_blank\" data-0c7=\"5c9f6d54e10af\">Fargo, Georgia<\/a>.\u00a0<em> (In the &#8220;tagalong&#8221; combo at right;\u00a0 a kayak with a rubber dinghy trailing behind.)\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>&#8220;Among other things I saw some fifty alligators during the first hour of paddling.&#8221;\u00a0 After that I stopped counting&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I camped at the\u00a0<a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-YDFr-lH_Ok\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">CANAL RUN shelter<\/a>, \u201csome nine miles in from the <a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ6yywbZ9cQM4AaLhpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1553980976\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fgastateparks.org%2fStephenCFoster%2f\/RK=0\/RS=EoSUcaX79RbBvfyK0CInK24ooZw-\" target=\"_blank\" data-187=\"5c9f6db0b60e0\">Foster State Park<\/a> launch site.\u201d\u00a0 And &#8230; because it was so early in the season the canoe-only trails were much vegetated-over. \u00a0Which meant that many times I had to \u201cbutt-scootch\u201d my kayak over a barely-sunken log, and sometimes had to stick my hand out, grab another log and finish pulling the kayak [over]. \u00a0The<strong><em> last<\/em> <\/strong>time I reached my left hand out I saw a patch of white.\u00a0 It turned out to be yet another gator\u00a0&#8230;\u00a0\u201csmiling\u201d nicely at what he no doubt thought was a tasty new snack.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In case I&#8217;m being too subtle, that &#8220;tasty new snack&#8221; would have been my left hand.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And speaking of &#8220;pilgrimages&#8221; &#8211; and why I do things like camp overnight in the Okefenokee <em>(twice) <\/em>and fly to places like Jerusalem:\u00a0\u00a0I addressed that topic in my companion blog.\u00a0 See for example, <a href=\"http:\/\/dorscribe.com\/?p=11442\" rel=\"bookmark\">On St. James, Steinbeck, and sluts<\/a>.\u00a0<em> (The &#8220;sluts&#8221; came from\u00a0<a class=\"find\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Louis_Stevenson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">Robert Louis Stevenson<\/a>.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">That post noted that on a<strong><em> true<\/em><\/strong> pilgrimage \u2013 usually by and through such things as \u201cthe raw experience of hunger, cold, lack of sleep\u201d \u2013 we can quite often &#8220;find a sense of our fragility as mere human beings.\u201d\u00a0<em> (And to that might be added, mosquitoes, snakes and great numbers of alligators.)\u00a0<\/em> The post added that a <strong><em>true<\/em> <\/strong>pilgrimage can be \u201cone of the most chastening, but also one of the most liberating\u201d of personal experiences.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I certainly felt &#8220;chastened&#8221; at almost having my left hand chomped by a &#8220;smiling&#8221; gator.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/1445624973384-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"1445624973384\" width=\"294\" height=\"194\" \/>And speaking of being chastened:\u00a0 &#8220;One thing I learned is that \u2013 in the Okefenokee \u2013 there are precious few places to stop and take a break&#8230;\u00a0 The shelters \u2013 for day use or overnight \u2013 are few and far between.\u00a0 As a result, the ol\u2019 <em><a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/keister\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">keister<\/a><\/em>\u00a0got extremely sore by the end of the second day.\u00a0 (<em>Not to mention blisters on my palms\u2026<\/em>)&#8221;\u00a0 That is, in this swamp there are few &#8220;<a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/shore\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">shores<\/a>&#8221; to speak of.\u00a0 Just\u00a0a &#8220;line of reeds that an alligator can mash down.&#8221;\u00a0 And where a wandering kayaker &#8211; for example &#8211; steps off at his own peril, as shown above left.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Also, one time I was paddling through a very narrow canal when I saw a big bull gator \u2013 who eventually submerged. This was on the canoe trail to <a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/www.paddling.net\/places\/showReport.html?2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">Monkey Lake<\/a>.\u00a0 As I paddled over the water where the gator <strong><em>had<\/em><\/strong> been, I could swear he came up and nudged the bottom of my kayak.\u00a0 I figured it was an accident, at least the first time.\u00a0 (<em>But the second time?)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>That<\/em><\/strong> added some spice to the trip.<\/p>\n<p>Then there was the time I miscalculated my canoe-speed, and ended up paddling &#8211; late in the dark of night &#8211; through what seemed like miles of water lilies.\u00a0<em> (Well after 8:00 p.m., as noted in <a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=2558\" rel=\"bookmark\">Okefenokee \u2026 Part III<\/a>.)\u00a0 <\/em>Which led me to think,\u00a0as I paddled through the swamp in the dark:\u00a0 \u201cThat <a title=\"Claude Monet\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Claude_Monet\">Monet<\/a>\u00a0guy can take his stinkin\u2019\u00a0<a class=\"find\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Water_Lilies_%28Monet_series%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">water lilies<\/a>\u00a0and<em> \u2018<strong><em><a class=\"find\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/where_the_sun_don%27t_shine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">stick \u2018em where the sun don\u2019t shine<\/a><\/em><\/strong>.&#8217;\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That is, the<em> canoe only<\/em> trail to the<b> <\/b><a class=\" td-hu\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/aol\/image;_ylt=AwrE19f2cp9clSoAnxBpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByMDgyYjJiBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMyBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzYw--?q=cedar+hammock+shelter+okefenokee&amp;v_t=comsearch\" target=\"_blank\">Cedar Hammock Shelter<\/a> is &#8211;
