featuring\u00a0<a title=\"Meryl Streep\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Meryl_Streep\">Meryl Streep<\/a>\u00a0as\u00a0<a title=\"Katharine Graham\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Katharine_Graham\">Katharine Graham<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Tom Hanks\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tom_Hanks\">Tom Hanks<\/a>\u00a0as\u00a0<a title=\"Ben Bradlee\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ben_Bradlee\">Ben Bradlee<\/a>.\u00a0<em> (The publisher and executive editor of the\u00a0<a title=\"The Washington Post\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Washington_Post\">Washington Post<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; respectively &#8211; at the time in question.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It brought back a lot of memories.<\/p>\n<p>The film &#8211; set in June 1971 &#8211; covered the month when both the\u00a0<a title=\"The Washington Post\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Washington_Post\">Washington Post<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1515983311762_563\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0LEVyPPEVxa28EApQRpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBydWNmY2MwBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwM0BHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1516012112\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fThe_New_York_Times\/RK=0\/RS=4_MwsmvgMp7x6NZpaANNu5_NNkg-\" target=\"_blank\" data-e1b=\"5a5c11d026abe\">New York Times<\/a>\u00a0ran afoul of the\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1515983417844_1168\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ7J45ElxayIcAITZpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1516012217\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fPresidency_of_Richard_Nixon\/RK=0\/RS=nCLRJmN2uHZwPVc69ppXCr9lteQ-\" target=\"_blank\" data-9bb=\"5a5c1239a86d3\">Nixon Administration<\/a>.\u00a0 Specifically, both newspapers ended up in the U.S. Supreme Court, charged &#8211; essentially &#8211; with treason.\u00a0 At stake &#8211; also essentially &#8211; was the future of\u00a0<a title=\"Freedom of the press in the United States\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Freedom_of_the_press_in_the_United_States\">freedom of the press in the United States<\/a>.\u00a0 <em>(You know, that pain-in-the-ass part of the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"First Amendment of the United States Constitution\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/First_Amendment_of_the_United_States_Constitution\">First Amendment of the Constitution<\/a>?)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a title=\"The Washington Post\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Washington_Post\">Washington Post<\/a>\u00a0was perhaps <strong><em>best<\/em><\/strong> known for its coverage of\u00a0<a title=\"Watergate scandal\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Watergate_scandal\">Watergate scandal<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[From 1972 to 1974], in the best-known episode in the newspaper&#8217;s history, reporters\u00a0<a title=\"Bob Woodward\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bob_Woodward\">Bob Woodward<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Carl Bernstein\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carl_Bernstein\">Carl Bernstein<\/a>\u00a0led the American press&#8217; investigation into what became known as the\u00a0<a title=\"Watergate scandal\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Watergate_scandal\">Watergate scandal<\/a>; reporting in the newspaper greatly contributed to the resignation of President\u00a0<a title=\"Richard Nixon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Richard_Nixon\">Richard Nixon<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However,\u00a0<a title=\"The Post (film)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Post_(film)\" data-serp-pos=\"0\"><span class=\"searchmatch\">The<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"searchmatch\">Post<\/span>\u00a0(<span class=\"searchmatch\">film<\/span>)<\/a>\u00a0covers an earlier time:\u00a0 June, 1971.<\/p>\n<p>That was when first the\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1515983311762_563\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0LEVyPPEVxa28EApQRpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBydWNmY2MwBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwM0BHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1516012112\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fThe_New_York_Times\/RK=0\/RS=4_MwsmvgMp7x6NZpaANNu5_NNkg-\" target=\"_blank\" data-e1b=\"5a5c11d026abe\">New York Times<\/a>, then the\u00a0<a title=\"The Washington Post\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Washington_Post\">Washington Post<\/a>\u00a0began running a series of articles based on the\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1515971454160_249\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0LEVyx941taEtoAQyJpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1516000254\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fPentagon_Papers\/RK=0\/RS=DPaL7sxcaaaR7a6D1_PgceciM0k-\" target=\"_blank\" data-b85=\"5a5be37e7e8d5\">Pentagon Papers<\/a>.\u00a0<em> (The 47-volume, 7,000-page assessment of the history of the Vietnam War.\u00a0 It was ordered in 1967 by\u00a0Secretary of Defense\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Robert-S-McNamara\">Robert S. McNamara<\/a>, and ultimately\u00a0concluded that the war was &#8220;unwinnable.&#8221;\u00a0 The papers were &#8220;turned over (without authorization) to\u00a0<em><span id=\"ref180487\"><\/span><a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/The-New-York-Times\">The New York Times<\/a><\/em>\u00a0by\u00a0<span id=\"ref180488\"><\/span><a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Daniel-Ellsberg\">Daniel Ellsberg<\/a>, a senior research associate at the\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink autoxref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Massachusetts-Institute-of-Technology\">Massachusetts Institute of Technology\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0Center for International Studies.&#8221;)\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/4\/4d\/TIME_Magazine_-_Pentagon_Papers_cover.jpg\" width=\"168\" height=\"222\" \/>\u00a0The Nixon Administration charged Ellsberg with conspiracy, espionage, and theft of government property &#8211; i.e., the\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1515971454160_249\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0LEVyx941taEtoAQyJpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1516000254\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fPentagon_Papers\/RK=0\/RS=DPaL7sxcaaaR7a6D1_PgceciM0k-\" target=\"_blank\" data-b85=\"5a5be37e7e8d5\">Pentagon Papers<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; for which he faced a possible 115 years in prison.\u00a0 And the substance\u00a0of\u00a0<a title=\"The Post (film)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Post_(film)\" data-serp-pos=\"0\"><span class=\"searchmatch\">The<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"searchmatch\">Post<\/span>\u00a0(<span class=\"searchmatch\">film<\/span>)<\/a>\u00a0is that &#8220;Kate&#8221; Graham herself faced criminal prosecution, not to mention personal bankruptcy and the loss of the &#8220;family paper.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0<em>(The<\/em>\u00a0<em><a title=\"The Washington Post\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Washington_Post\">Post (newspaper<\/a>)\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>An aside:\u00a0 The paper had been &#8220;in the family&#8221; since 1933.\u00a0 That&#8217;s when Katharine&#8217;s father &#8211;\u00a0<a title=\"Eugene Meyer (financier)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eugene_Meyer_(financier)\">Eugene Meyer<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; bought the paper in a bankruptcy action.\u00a0 &#8220;In 1946, Meyer was succeeded as publisher by his son-in-law,\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Philip Graham\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philip_Graham\">Philip Graham<\/a>&#8221; &#8211;\u00a0<a title=\"Katharine Graham\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Katharine_Graham\">Katharine<\/a>&#8216;s husband &#8211; who died in 1963.\u00a0 <em>(Which itself offers some interesting drama&#8230;)\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>The point being that\u00a0<a title=\"Katharine Graham\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Katharine_Graham\">Katharine Graham<\/a>\u00a0had a lot to lose&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I could write a lot about\u00a0<a title=\"The Post (film)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Post_(film)\" data-serp-pos=\"0\"><span class=\"searchmatch\">The<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"searchmatch\">Post<\/span><\/a>\u00a0as both film art and a commentary on how\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1516069040599_460\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrBTzavYF1ae9gADjRpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1516097839\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.goodreads.com%2fquotes%2ftag%2fhistory-repeating-itself\/RK=0\/RS=QrFty0nNVAOb4D7azGcm3LRojmA-\" target=\"_blank\" data-121=\"5a5d60afeb0a3\">history tends to repeat<\/a>.\u00a0 <em>(My original title for this &#8220;article&#8221; &#8211; to avoid a redundant &#8220;Post post&#8221; &#8211; was &#8220;Movie review: &#8216;The Post&#8217; &#8211; and history repeating itself&#8230;&#8221;)\u00a0<\/em> And I <strong><em>will<\/em><\/strong> do more &#8220;posts on &#8216;The Post'&#8221; in the future.<\/p>\n<p>But for today I&#8217;ll focus on journalism and its place in American law.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/2\/25\/All_the_President%27s_Men_book_1974.jpg\" alt=\"All the President's Men book 1974.jpg\" width=\"139\" height=\"203\" \/>For one thing, I <strong><em>majored<\/em><\/strong> in journalism because of &#8220;Woodstein&#8221; and the film\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1516069244264_1062\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0LEVxt7YV1aoIAAl19pCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBybGY3bmpvBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMyBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1516098043\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fWoodstein\/RK=0\/RS=WULEDshWquSSjUxWDb4rnhx.lZQ-\" target=\"_blank\" data-624=\"5a5d617bc2200\">All the President&#8217;s Men<\/a>.\u00a0 For another, after graduation in 1976 I went to work for the St. Petersburg <em>Times<\/em> &#8211; now the <a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1516069471674_659\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0LEV2FeYl1aPJUAFzlpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByNXM5bzY5BGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMzBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1516098271\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fTampa_Bay_Times\/RK=0\/RS=p9h4wExByQvLKNcchoAl5EKLc1I-\" target=\"_blank\" data-b10=\"5a5d625f5aff9\">Tampa Bay Times<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; for five years.\u00a0 Then I\u00a0 went to law school intending to become a reporter specializing in the law and legal proceedings.<\/p>\n<p>Which could explain my focus for today&#8217;s review.<\/p>\n<p>Near the end of the film, the staff of the Washington <em>Post<\/em> got a telephone call &#8211; on a rotary phone, no less &#8211; announcing the Supreme Court&#8217;s decision.\u00a0 At stake was not only freedom of the press, but also the personal and financial future of\u00a0<a title=\"Katharine Graham\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Katharine_Graham\">Katharine Graham<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Ben Bradlee\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ben_Bradlee\">Ben Bradlee<\/a>.\u00a0<em>\u00a0(<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1516070159928_722\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0LEVx8OZV1a6kAAliJpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByNXQ0NThjBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwM1BHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1516098959\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikiquote.org%2fwiki%2fJohn_Mitchell\/RK=0\/RS=gcRK_m0hmYCtg2Ti65WG_dXXUzQ-\" target=\"_blank\" data-8ab=\"5a5d650f67c82\">U.S. Attorney General John Mitchell<\/a>\u00a0was quoted as saying, &#8220;Katie Graham&#8217;s gonna get her tit caught in a big fat wringer if that&#8217;s published.&#8221;)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The announcement?\u00a0 &#8220;We won, <strong><em>6-3<\/em><\/strong>!&#8221;\u00a0 <em>(<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1516070427951_814\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0LEVxwbZl1abMYAuBVpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1516099227\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fadoremus.org%2f2007%2f12%2f31%2fquotOr-Words-to-that-Effectquot%2f\/RK=0\/RS=RovtqLVMG0BIlN9TBMdxC4ismOM-\" target=\"_blank\" data-197=\"5a5d661bcdc21\">Or words to that effect<\/a>&#8230;)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>My first reaction?\u00a0 That the <strong><em>scariest<\/em><\/strong> part of the movie was that &#8211; back in 1971 &#8211; three Supreme Court Justices seemed to agree with the\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1515983417844_1168\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ7J45ElxayIcAITZpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1516012217\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fPresidency_of_Richard_Nixon\/RK=0\/RS=nCLRJmN2uHZwPVc69ppXCr9lteQ-\" target=\"_blank\" data-9bb=\"5a5c1239a86d3\">Nixon Administration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And if that was true back then, what would happen today if the Trump Administration took a similar stand, from its own\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1516070730889_302\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0LEVy1JZ11atmgApRdpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1516099530\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fNixon%2527s_Enemies_List\/RK=0\/RS=qAR4NJgM6HfREUJakk_sMettPP8-\" target=\"_blank\" data-0c6=\"5a5d674a50dd6\">Enemies List<\/a>?\u00a0 Or worse, if Trump goes on to\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1516072604400_1296\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"http:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrBT_ubbl1aAYkAWYFpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByZnU4cmNpBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwM5BHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1516101404\/RO=10\/RU=http%3a%2f%2fxroads.virginia.edu%2f%257eMA02%2fvolpe%2fnewdeal%2fcourt.html\/RK=0\/RS=fxoPbAZtNpGgpAlohUU3q3bi9Ig-\" target=\"_blank\" data-b02=\"5a5d6e9c5bea7\">pack the Court<\/a>?\u00a0 But &#8211;\u00a0 after further review &#8211;
