past and present &#8211;\u00a0<a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_McGovern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">George McGovern<\/a>\u00a0actually served his country&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">* \u00a0 * \u00a0 * \u00a0 *<\/p>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<p>It&#8217;s the Thursday after Christmas Day.\u00a0 So <strong><em>those<\/em><\/strong> holidays are over, and the end of 2017 is near.\u00a0 Which means it&#8217;s time to look back at 2017.\u00a0 And for me especially,<strong><em> that<\/em> <\/strong>means looking back at some draft blog-posts that I started this past year, but never got around to finishing.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/7\/72\/ThompsonWatergate.jpg\" width=\"211\" height=\"140\" \/>One of the posts was on\u00a0<a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_McGovern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">George McGovern<\/a>\u00a0and his famous &#8220;KMA&#8221; buttons.\u00a0 But first a note:\u00a0 In the\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1514256935212_163\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrBT8slukFafh0AGBVpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1514285734\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fUnited_States_presidential_election%2c_1972\/RK=0\/RS=Z169DDeXqotjj2VXS0KAhMgMD8U-\" target=\"_blank\" data-acd=\"5a41ba266f9f3\">1972 presidential election<\/a>, only about four people in America &#8211; including me &#8211; voted for McGovern.\u00a0 Richard Nixon won in a landslide, but neither he nor Vice-president Spiro Agnew served out their terms of office.\u00a0<em> (<a title=\"Spiro Agnew\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spiro_Agnew\">Agnew<\/a>\u00a0resigned in less than a year over allegations he took bribes as\u00a0<a title=\"Governor of Maryland\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Governor_of_Maryland\">Governor of Maryland<\/a>.\u00a0 Nixon resigned over the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Watergate Scandal\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Watergate_Scandal\">Watergate Scandal<\/a>\u00a0in August 1974, illustrated above right.)\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Which means that my vote for McGovern in 1972 is <strong><em>one of the proudest moments of my life<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In case you&#8217;ve forgotten, that election in 1972 was famous for\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1514433461243_283\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"http:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrBT9W1a0RamT8AIs1pCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBydWNmY2MwBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwM0BHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1514462261\/RO=10\/RU=http%3a%2f%2fwww.slate.com%2farticles%2fpodcasts%2fwhistlestop%2f2015%2f03%2fnixon_s_dirty_tricks_and_muskie_s_tears_of_anger_during_the_election_of.html\/RK=0\/RS=19.Jd_b_8ONWLKGEM4Rjy6M3bhI-\" target=\"_blank\" data-8f4=\"5a446bb595d52\">Republican dirty tricks<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<em>(Including but not limited to the infamous &#8220;<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1514504400736_148\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0LEVxHOgEVad8UAcmVpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1514533199\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fCanuck_letter\/RK=0\/RS=8xFQ_Hmp1CEjz4yDb..Ia9I.9l8-\" target=\"_blank\" data-a3a=\"5a4580cf11fce\">Canuck letter<\/a>&#8221; that led to\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1514433461243_283\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"http:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrBT9W1a0RamT8AIs1pCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBydWNmY2MwBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwM0BHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1514462261\/RO=10\/RU=http%3a%2f%2fwww.slate.com%2farticles%2fpodcasts%2fwhistlestop%2f2015%2f03%2fnixon_s_dirty_tricks_and_muskie_s_tears_of_anger_during_the_election_of.html\/RK=0\/RS=19.Jd_b_8ONWLKGEM4Rjy6M3bhI-\" target=\"_blank\" data-8f4=\"5a446bb595d52\">Ed Muskie\u2019s tears of anger<\/a>.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But since then I&#8217;ve gotten used to underhanded Republican campaign tactics.\u00a0 Like the fact that some stay-at-home conservatives in 1972<strong><em> also<\/em><\/strong> took issue with McGovern&#8217;s service in World War II.\u00a0 And just for the record, McGovern served in combat with the the 741st Squadron of the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"455th Bombardment Group\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/455th_Bombardment_Group\">455th Bombardment Group<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Fifteenth Air Force\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fifteenth_Air_Force\">Fifteenth Air Force<\/a>, stationed\u00a0near\u00a0<a title=\"Cerignola\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cerignola\">Cerignola<\/a>, Italy.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/a\/a6\/B-1_nose_art_commemorating_B-24_Dakota_Queen.jpg\/1024px-B-1_nose_art_commemorating_B-24_Dakota_Queen.jpg\" width=\"280\" height=\"185\" \/>He was commissioned a pilot in the <a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1514504524283_316\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0LEVypLgUVa0jIArAZpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1514533324\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fUnited_States_Army_Air_Forces\/RK=0\/RS=HSqcV2naMg2_TSUMXigVeXsZY.c-\" target=\"_blank\" data-190=\"5a45814c41f19\">Army Air Forces<\/a>\u00a0and flew 35\u00a0missions over enemy territory.\u00a0 He piloted a B\u201124 Liberator that he named &#8220;the Dakota Queen,&#8221; in honor of his wife Eleanor.\u00a0 <em>(And won the\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1514433754304_791\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"http:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0LEVzTZbERa4vEAdzNpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBydWNmY2MwBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwM0BHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1514462554\/RO=10\/RU=http%3a%2f%2fwww.custermen.com%2fAtTheFront%2fBiographies%2fMcGovern.htm\/RK=0\/RS=DGjNziTnFWVKRSuvaBRwe_yVxdU-\" target=\"_blank\" data-b98=\"5a446cda6659c\">Distinguished Flying Cross<\/a>.)\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But my favorite story about George McGovern came much later in his life.\u00a0 It happened late in the 1972 campaign and involved his confronting a heckler from the Richard Nixon camp.\u00a0<em> (Though it was<strong> not<\/strong>\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1514434066219_328\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0LEV2ERbkRah6AADjtpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1514462865\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fDonald_Segretti\/RK=0\/RS=RblMNtNU04eJy9Aw4GRZTJRtQyE-\" target=\"_blank\" data-531=\"5a446e11c33ab\">Donald Segretti<\/a>)<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>McGovern was giving a speech and a Nixon admirer kept heckling him.\u00a0 McGovern called the young man over and whispered in his ear, &#8220;<strong>Listen, you son-of-a-bitch, why don&#8217;t you kiss my ass?<\/strong>&#8221;\u00a0 The heckler confirmed this to an inquiring journalist and the remark was widely reported.\u00a0 By the following night, <strong>&#8220;KMA&#8221; buttons<\/strong> were being worn by people in the crowds at McGovern rallies.\u00a0 Several years later, McGovern observed <a title=\"Mississippi\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mississippi\">Mississippi<\/a> Senator <a title=\"James Eastland\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Eastland\">James Eastland<\/a> looking at him from across the Senate floor and chuckling to himself.\u00a0 He subsequently approached McGovern and asked, &#8220;Did you really tell that guy in &#8217;72 to kiss your ass?&#8221;\u00a0 When McGovern smiled and nodded, Eastland replied, &#8220;<strong>That was the best line in the campaign<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>See <a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_McGovern_presidential_campaign,_1972\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">McGovern presidential campaign, 1972 &#8211; Wikipedia<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0And again just for the record, Senator James Eastland was a Democrat &#8211; like McGovern &#8211; but who supported the\u00a0<a title=\"Conservative coalition\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Conservative_coalition\">Conservative coalition<\/a>, and was &#8220;known nationally as a symbol of Southern support for\u00a0<a title=\"Racial segregation\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Racial_segregation\">racial segregation<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0 But this was when Southern Democrats were effectively Republicans:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Mississippi was effectively a one-party state, dominated by conservative white Democrats since the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Disfranchisement after Reconstruction era\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Disfranchisement_after_Reconstruction_era\">disfranchisement of African Americans<\/a>\u00a0with the passage of the 1890 state constitution.\u00a0 The state used\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Poll tax (United States)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Poll_tax_(United_States)\">poll taxes<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Literacy tests\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Literacy_tests\">literacy tests<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Grandfather clauses\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grandfather_clauses\">grandfather clauses<\/a>\u00a0to exclude African Americans from the political system.\u00a0 Therefore, winning the Democratic nomination was tantamount to election.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/-mm-\/4efdca31c373f49e9c9c6cb4d426bff8a14c3430\/c=136-0-2863-2050&amp;r=x404&amp;c=534x401\/local\/-\/media\/2015\/09\/30\/JacksonMS\/JacksonMS\/635792326002973434-AP6708040164.jpg\" width=\"267\" height=\"200\" \/>But this was also a time when political rivals could &#8220;sup with their enemies.&#8221;\u00a0 In the photo at right, Eastland shared a moment with noted northern liberal &#8211; and a very young &#8211; Ted Kennedy.<\/p>\n<p>You can see this photo &#8211; or one much like it &#8211; at\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1514505478798_367\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"http:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrBTzoFhUVaT7wA3DhpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1514534278\/RO=10\/RU=http%3a%2f%2fwww.nydailynews.com%2fnews%2fpolitics%2fted-kennedy-senate-assignments-boozy-meeting-article-1.2379978\/RK=0\/RS=sENT_LeXIVW6jspMcB2zIEfqeIg-\" target=\"_blank\" data-293=\"5a45850680e9a\">Kennedy got Senate assignments in boozy meeting (N.Y. Daily News, 9\/30\/15<\/a>).\u00a0 At the time Eastland chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>After he slammed three drinks, Kennedy staggered away with the three assignments he wanted the most&#8230;\u00a0 \u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s quarter to eleven, and I\u2019m barely able to get up.\u00a0 So of course I go back to my office [and] walk in there smelling like a brewery.\u00a0 Here\u2019s our little senator, 30 years old; he\u2019s been down here two weeks, and he\u2019s stiff as a billy goat at 10 in the morning.\u201d\u00a0 Kennedy said Mississippi&#8217;s Sen. James Eastland poured him a drink as soon as he arrived to the 1963 meeting.\u00a0 \u201cBourbon or scotch?\u201d the chairman asked.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But of course Eastland&#8217;s legendary drinking &#8211; or Kennedy&#8217;s for that matter &#8211; is a whole &#8216;nother subject entirely.\u00a0 The point is that back in the <a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1514506302357_356\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrBT.E9iEVajlEASU5pCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBybGY3bmpvBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMyBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1514535101\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fidioms.thefreedictionary.com%2fthe%2bgood%2bold%2bdays\/RK=0\/RS=zJLjWgPvmHcrqh.nN1fkXBSBJLI-\" target=\"_blank\" data-454=\"5a45883ddcc32\">good old days<\/a>, politicians still had a sense of humor.\u00a0 <em>(Even to the point of chuckling over an arch-enemy&#8217;s &#8220;<strong>best line in the campaign<\/strong>.\u201d)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And in a very big sense politicians as a group were eminently more <a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1514508396290_326\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"http:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0LEV1lrkEVaU6IAo1ZpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByNXM5bzY5BGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMzBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1514537196\/RO=10\/RU=http%3a%2f%2fwww.thefreedictionary.com%2flikeable\/RK=0\/RS=E_yUq2sqivdFE2xMCehFkFrcmuo-\" target=\"_blank\" data-1db=\"5a45906c4a3dd\">likeable<\/a>\u00a0than they are today.\u00a0 <em>(See also\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=1245\" rel=\"bookmark\">On Reagan, Kennedy \u2013 and \u201cDick the Butcher<\/a>.&#8221;)\u00a0<\/em> But the <strong><em>main<\/em> <\/strong>point I&#8217;d like to make is that I wish George McGovern could have hung around long enough to run in the\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1514506719955_292\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrBTzvfiUVaAw4A4OtpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1514535520\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fUnited_States_presidential_election%2c_2016\/RK=0\/RS=VXF_ehlDI9W5PSz7g.mHbmvkMEU-\" target=\"_blank\" data-2a5=\"5a4589e0030a8\">2016 presidential election<\/a>.\u00a0 That way he could have told<strong><em> someone else<\/em> <\/strong>to &#8220;kiss my ass!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For that alone,\u00a0<a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_McGovern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">George McGovern<\/a>\u00a0would have made a <strong><em>great<\/em><\/strong> president&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">* \u00a0 * \u00a0 * \u00a0 *<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img src=\"http:\/\/static1.businessinsider.com\/image\/56684d90dd089548678b46f7-480\/donald-trump.jpg\" alt=\"Donald Trump\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">* \u00a0 * \u00a0 * \u00a0 *<\/p>\n<p><em>The upper image is courtesy of\u00a0<a class=\"find\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_McGovern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"f:url\">George McGovern &#8211; Wikipedia<\/a>.\u00a0 In other versions of the &#8220;KMA&#8221; story, McGovern\u00a0was appearing in <a title=\"Battle Creek, Michigan\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_Creek,_Michigan\">Battle Creek, Michigan<\/a>, on November 2, when a Nixon admirer heckled him.\u00a0 McGovern told the heckler, &#8220;I&#8217;ve got a secret for you,&#8221; then said softly into his ear, &#8220;Kiss my ass.&#8221;\u00a0 The incident was overheard and reported in the press, and became part of the tale of the campaign.\u00a0 See also\u00a0<a class=\"external text\" href=\"http:\/\/news.google.com\/newspapers?id=DXksAAAAIBAJ&amp;sjid=KswEAAAAIBAJ&amp;pg=2998,472856&amp;dq=mcgovern+kiss-my-ass&amp;hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow\">&#8220;George, Heckler Exchange Words&#8221;<\/a>. <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"The Spartanburg Herald\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Spartanburg_Herald\">The Spartanburg Herald<\/a>.
