That was an old-time&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Newspaper\" target=\"_blank\">newspaper<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 more like a personal&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Newsletter\" target=\"_blank\">newsletter<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 written and published by&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harry_Golden\" target=\"_blank\">Harry Golden<\/a>. Back in the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1950s\" target=\"_blank\">1950s<\/a>, people called Harry a \u201cvoice of sanity amid the braying of jackals.\u201d&nbsp;<em>(For his work on the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/uncpress.unc.edu\/books\/T-8054.html\" target=\"_blank\">Israelite<\/a>.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s now my goal as well. To be a&nbsp;\u201c<strong><em>voice of sanity amid the braying of jackals<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more on the blog-name connection, see the notes below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em><strong>In the meantim<\/strong><\/em><strong><em>e<\/em>:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>April 30, 2026 &#8211; My last post talked about an upcoming adventure-trip to Ireland in May. (The future of which seemed in doubt because of a last-Thursday visit to the emergency room, caused by a meniscus tear that turned out to be not as serious as we first thought. And a side note: My meniscus &#8211; plural, &#8220;menisci?&#8221; &#8211; is fine.) <em><strong>So, back to that <a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=26465\">Preview of Ireland \u2013 2026<\/a>:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>My travel partner and I will fly into <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dublin\" target=\"_blank\">Dublin<\/a>, then travel by car in a great circle route that will head over to the west coast, then up and over to Belfast and back down to Dublin. This post will cover what figures to be a highlight, weather permitting and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_creek_don%27t_rise\" target=\"_blank\">the creek don\u2019t rise<\/a>: My clambering to the top of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Skellig_Michael\" target=\"_blank\">Skellig Michael<\/a>, \u201ca rocky island off the coast of County Kerry, Ireland, with a Gaelic monastery and a World Heritage Site.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>But even before that ER visit there was a last-minute change. The night before I clamber atop Skellig Michael &#8211; weather permitting &#8211; we will now be staying at <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/ie\/killarney-selfcatering-haven-suites.en-gb.html\">Haven Suites<\/a>, on Monsignor O\u2019Flaherty Road in Killarney. We originally planned to stay in Dingle, but that would mean a lot of excessive driving. (Mass transit away from Dublin &#8211; out in the Irish <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/language\/boonies-meaning-origins\">boonies<\/a> &#8211; is not as good as in England last year, so we rented a car. That in turn will require getting used to driving on the &#8220;wrong side of the road.&#8221;) <strong><em>So anyway<\/em><\/strong>, the point being: That change will reduce driving time from Cork to Killarney from 5.5 to 4.5 hours, and &#8211; after we leave Killarney &#8211; reduce the driving time from Cork to Galway from an estimated six hours to four hours and 15 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But before all <em>that<\/em>, three days in Dublin. We&#8217;ll visit places like the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theirishroadtrip.com\/jameson-distillery-bow-st\/\">Jameson Distillery<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trinity_College_Dublin\">Trinity College<\/a> (with its <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Book_of_Kells\">Book of Kells<\/a>), and the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/makethetripmatter.com\/is-the-guinness-storehouse-tour-worth-it\/\">Guinness Storehouse Tour<\/a>. That Guinness tour will include a floor featuring 80 years of ground-breaking marketing campaigns, with &#8220;one of the most unique collections of advertising in the world from tiny Guinness buttons to giant Guinness posters and statues.&#8221; (As shown in the top image.) Then end at &#8220;the real best floor  of the tour because it\u2019s where you get your free pint of Guinness &#8230; at the Gravity Bar,&#8221; one of the highest points in the city with &#8220;360\u00b0 panoramic views across all of Dublin.&#8221; (And a note: We won&#8217;t be driving that rental car until the day we leave town; <em>in<\/em> town we&#8217;ll rely on Dublin mass transit.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leaving Dublin we&#8217;ll rent a car and drive to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kilkenny\">Kilkenny<\/a>, built on both banks of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/River_Nore\">River Nore<\/a>, with a population of 27,184. (According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2022_census_of_Ireland\">2022 census<\/a>.) There we&#8217;ll visit <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kilkenny_Castle\">Kilkenny Castle<\/a>, built in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1260_in_Ireland\">1260<\/a>\u00a0to control a fording-point of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/River_Nore\">River Nore<\/a>\u00a0and as &#8220;a symbol of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anglo-Norman_invasion_of_Ireland\">Norman occupation<\/a>.&#8221; After that we&#8217;ll <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ireland.com\/en-us\/things-to-do\/attractions\/smithwicks-experience\/\">visit the Smithwick&#8217;s Experience<\/a>: &#8220;In Dublin, it\u2019s all about Guinness. In Cork, make it a Murphy\u2019s. And Kilkenny? Well, Smithwick\u2019s is the way to go:&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>Brewed in the medieval city since the 18th century, this ale has a rich ruby colour with a pale creamy head, and is served in pubs all over the island of Ireland. But tasting it is one thing, experiencing it is another, and the best way to uncover the history, personalities and place behind the beer is with a visit to Smithwick\u2019s Experience Kilkenny.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>And after driving that first 80 miles out of Dublin &#8211; &#8220;on the wrong side of the ^%$# road!&#8221; &#8211; I&#8217;ll be ready for a tall cool glass of Smithwick&#8217;s best. And after that, ready for the next day&#8217;s drive to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cork_(city)\">Cork<\/a>. Unbeknownst to me, the term has a history going back to the American occupation of the Philippines in the early 20th century. It was &#8220;adopted into English shortly after the turn of the last century from Tagalog, one of the languages of the Philippines. In Tagalog, bundok means \u201cmountain,\u201d and it seems that word also came to be used more loosely in English in reference to any remote place&#8230; The use of boondocks among the U.S. military ultimately endured, and led to the word being taken across to Vietnam, where it was first clipped to boonies in the 1950s.&#8221; (And that&#8217;s why I love blogging; you learn stuff.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Also about <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Murphy%27s_Irish_Stout\" target=\"_blank\">Murphy&#8217;s Irish Stout<\/a>, from <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Murphy%27s_Irish_Stout\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia<\/a>:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>Its flavour is evocative of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Caramel\">caramel<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Malt\">malt<\/a>, and is described as &#8220;a distant relative of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chocolate_milk\">chocolate milk<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0The resemblance to milk extends beyond flavour to texture: Murphy&#8217;s is free from any hint of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carbonation\">carbonation<\/a>,\u00a0and is delivered &#8220;black as strong cappuccino&#8221; with an inch of foam \u2013 the head \u2013 on top. The water of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/River_Lee\">River Lee<\/a>\u00a0in Cork allegedly gave Murphy&#8217;s its quality.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Which sounds interesting. (I wonder if it will give me my preferred &#8220;two-beer buzz?&#8221;)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The lower image is courtesy of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Smithwick%27s\">Smithwick&#8217;s &#8211; Wikipedia<\/a>. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>* &nbsp; * &nbsp; * &nbsp; *<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Re: &nbsp;The&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/uncpress.unc.edu\/books\/T-8054.html\" target=\"_blank\">Israelite<\/a>. &nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harry_Golden\" target=\"_blank\">Harry Golden<\/a>&nbsp;grew up in the Jewish ghetto of New York City, but eventually moved to Charlotte, North Carolina.&nbsp; Thus the \u201cCarolina Israelite.\u201d&nbsp; I on the other hand am a \u201cclassic&nbsp;<strong>74-<\/strong>year-old \u201cWASP\u201d \u2013&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/White_Anglo-Saxon_Protestant\" target=\"_blank\">White Anglo-Saxon Protestant<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;and live in north Georgia.&nbsp; Thus the \u201cGeorgia Wasp.\u201d&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Anyway,<strong>&nbsp;in<\/strong>&nbsp;North Carolina Harry&nbsp;wrote and published the \u201cisraelite\u201d from the 1940s through the 1960s. &nbsp;He was a \u201ccigar-smoking, bourbon-loving&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vocabulary.com\/dictionary\/raconteur\" target=\"_blank\">raconteur<\/a>.\u201d &nbsp;(He told good stories.)
