Partly because I just got back from four days last week on a family stay-cation down in Panama City Beach. (21st floor, Ocean Ritz, <em>very<\/em> limited parking.) Which was fun, but marred by high winds, high waves and rip tides. I know. I was there.)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>But now I&#8217;m back home and need a post, <em><strong>quick<\/strong><\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just my luck, I ran across a copy of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrFORqJGJdkhFAh8VppCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzgEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1687652617\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fGeorge_Will\/RK=0\/RS=QJh9Hb3mkKRkqgoqqdqiiO6Qqes-\" target=\"_blank\">George Will<\/a>&#8216;s 2002 book, <em>With a Happy Eye, But&#8230;<\/em> (Published just after the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrFGhRpJpdk0ZAhaBlpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzMEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1687656170\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fSeptember_11_attacks\/RK=0\/RS=TnX5CubTQVxTk67M9qS.AvpXMA8-\" target=\"_blank\">9\/11 attacks<\/a>.) I don&#8217;t agree with all of George&#8217;s politics, but he&#8217;s enough of a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrFeXnVJpdkLAwirpppCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzMEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1687656277\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fdictionary.cambridge.org%2fdictionary%2fenglish%2floose-cannon\/RK=0\/RS=8EW6AyM0fsd1h4hTNjCntPOfOtc-\" target=\"_blank\">loose cannon<\/a> to suit me. For example, one reviewer called him a contrarian, and on <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrEpWkjKJdktC0idcFpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzIEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1687656612\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2f2016_United_States_presidential_election\/RK=0\/RS=l1F9.ZN9egZjudQkgkiUOxBBM6Q-\" target=\"_blank\">November 8, 2016<\/a> &#8211; another day that may &#8220;live in infamy&#8221; &#8211; I posted <a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=5210\">Donald Trump made<em><strong> me<\/strong><\/em> a Contrarian<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then too, he&#8217;s a Conservative With a Conscience. (These days an endangered species.) His conscience led Will to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrFaAbuKZdkvd8h_kBpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1687657070\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.commondreams.org%2fviews%2f2014%2f08%2f12%2fgeorge-will-confirms-nixons-vietnam-treason\/RK=0\/RS=Tw5Uqqr.S.W4zp9oLG49P7Kuv9E-\" target=\"_blank\">Confirm Nixon&#8217;s Treason<\/a>. <em>(Nixon scuttled the Paris Peace Talks, designed to end the war in Vietnam. He used secret information passed on from President Johnson, to make sure he &#8211; Nixon &#8211; got elected in 1968. If the talks had succeeded before the election, Nixon would have lost.)<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Will also went head to head with fellow conservatives George W. Bush and &#8211; most recently &#8211; Donald Trump. (See <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrNP6cZK5dkacohJ09pCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzQEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1687657370\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fidioms.thefreedictionary.com%2fthe%2benemy%2bof%2bmy%2benemy%2bis%2bmy%2bfriend\/RK=0\/RS=FZuyZ6wg7LnpQdgo6rPa60itecQ-\" target=\"_blank\">Enemy of enemy is friend<\/a>.) But mostly I admire his column-writing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I fancy myself a columnist, or what columnists have  <em><strong>become<\/strong><\/em> in this age of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrEa_e9TZdkr0ckwdxpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzMEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1687666238\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fBlog\/RK=0\/RS=XI3YjO3WC20l4rshPMyyxyte5JM-\" target=\"_blank\">weblogs<\/a>. And <a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?page_id=1045\">About the blog<\/a> (above) tells about how I remembered some advice <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Will\" target=\"_blank\">George<\/a> gave years ago: &#8220;As I recall,&#8221; I wrote, Will &#8220;defined a columnist as a writer with three seductive skills: &#8216;be pleasurable, be concise, and be gifted at changing the subject frequently.'&#8221; A side note: I&#8217;ve learned to change the subject <strong><em>so<\/em><\/strong> frequently that my family says my writing &#8220;goes all over the place.&#8221; To which I can only respond, &#8220;Have you read the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrE_q6nTpdkxkkkRjppCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzIEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1687666471\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fBook_of_Isaiah\/RK=0\/RS=OKCNDdG8dSMy5vqRG.s3Mx4kqL0-\" target=\"_blank\">Book of Isaiah<\/a>? <em><strong>That <\/strong><\/em>guy &#8216;goes all over the place!'&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, I&#8217;m trying to improve my column-writing <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrEpWkBT5dkUSckEBxpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzIEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1687666561\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwriting-center.phsc.edu%2fwriting%2funity-and-coherence-essays\/RK=0\/RS=THtFOTMpeJS_1LUZiM4CJ4dnYRQ-\" target=\"_blank\">Unity and Coherence<\/a>, so back to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrFORqJGJdkhFAh5FppCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1687652617\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.amazon.com%2fHappy-Eye-but-America-1997-2002%2fdp%2f0743243846\/RK=0\/RS=9Ipd4pxLaTxT09R3q7wnacBtwjA-\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Happy Eye, But<\/em><\/a>. George published this collection of columns just after the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrFGhRpJpdk0ZAhaBlpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzMEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1687656170\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fSeptember_11_attacks\/RK=0\/RS=TnX5CubTQVxTk67M9qS.AvpXMA8-\" target=\"_blank\">9\/11 attacks<\/a>. His aim was to show that despite the terror attacks, Americans could look to the future with hope, quoting <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrFQ6sgSpdkWt8jLxFpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1687665313\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fW._H._Auden\/RK=0\/RS=t3QXrcHc0flT3laXilajLxDq8lA-\" target=\"_blank\">W.H. Auden<\/a>&#8216;s poem&nbsp;<em><strong>The Horatians<\/strong><\/em>: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>We can only <\/p><p>do what seems to us we were made for, look at <\/p><p>this world with a happy eye <\/p><p>but from a sober perspective.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The line-spacing may seem strange &#8211; it looked even stranger in Will&#8217;s book &#8211; but that&#8217;s the best I could do. <em><strong>Back to the book:<\/strong><\/em> After starting to read it, on a lark I looked up &#8220;Trump&#8221; in the Index. I only found one reference, on page 257, as part of Will&#8217;s May 1998 column, &#8220;In Need of Another Moses.&#8221; The O<em>ther Moses<\/em> was <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrFRoi8NZdkhfEi1_JpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1687660092\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fRobert_Moses\/RK=0\/RS=k7v69WavlU4oKXv0J5LPJvNOLHY-\" target=\"_blank\">Robert Moses<\/a>, &#8220;American&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Urban_planner\">urban planner<\/a>&nbsp;and public official who worked in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_metropolitan_area\">New York metropolitan area<\/a>&nbsp;during the early to mid 20th century.&#8221; The <em>Need <\/em>had to so with <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrhbvcsNpdkSngjtw1pCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzIEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1687660204\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fGovernors_Island\/RK=0\/RS=yZU3QkajYYRyKlP_0DhKoYIRkYo-\" target=\"_blank\">Governors Island<\/a>, in New York Harbor, some 800 yards south of Manhattan. Will wondered why this &#8220;perfectly good island&#8221; was going to waste. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He reviewed the island&#8217;s history &#8211; including that &#8220;George Patton played polo there&#8221; &#8211; and wondered why no one, including the federal government, wanted to own and improve it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>It is passing strange that a congested city with a shortage of housing, green space, and Revolutionary War landmarks cannot find a moneymaking use for an island that is going to waste within hailing distance of the capital of money-making, Wall Street.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Which brings back the one-page reference to &#8220;The Donald,&#8221; in 367 total pages. (When was the last time we saw that ratio?) On why buyers were scarce, &#8220;&#8216;Ferries don&#8217;t work,&#8217; <strong><em>says developer Donald Trump<\/em><\/strong>.&#8221; (He cited the &#8220;long struggle toward profitability of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrFFRCEOZdkxi0jycdpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1687661061\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fFisher_Island%2c_Florida\/RK=0\/RS=MsQ8RJhOeT9ycFCzRlv_14IBQ2I-\" target=\"_blank\">Fisher Island<\/a> in Miami.&#8221;) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump added that in 1998 Americans were &#8220;too antsy to wait on even good ferry service,&#8221; and said that even Staten Island didn&#8217;t prosper until the ferry-to-Manhattan service &#8220;was supplemented by the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrJ_uU6OpdkkOUiajFpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1687661242\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fVerrazzano-Narrows_Bridge\/RK=0\/RS=1hSW9_gFcTD5gwh0jJDxqAnYzgo-\" target=\"_blank\">Verrazzano Narrows Bridge<\/a>.&#8221; Then there was the general business rule of thumb &#8211; as he tweaked it &#8211; for projects with potential high yields but also high risks. That rule normally: The first investor will go broke, while the &#8220;second guy in will make money.&#8221; As adjusted in the 1998 Trump-tweak, in the case of Governor&#8217;s Island, &#8220;The <strong><em>third<\/em><\/strong> guy in will make money.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>A big problem, he says, is the government is chock full of blocking mechanisms. Environmentalists are particularly nimble at litigating development to a money-eating standstill.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Observations? 1) Some things never change. 2) &#8220;Those darn <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrFeXnKO5dkoSsjIL1pCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzYEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1687661642\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fEnvironmentalist\/RK=0\/RS=qmyxpT8O3kZJ2TWqmbvs6A2cQ7Y-\" target=\"_blank\">environmentalists<\/a>, all concerned with protecting the environment!&#8221;  And 3) <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrNP6eaPJdkv1gjgDZpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzcEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1687661850\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.jpost.com%2fOpinion%2fIt-all-depends-on-whose-ox-is-gored-569008\/RK=0\/RS=oFf3Cjmf7lUthxmlnyDAQw_sB5Y-\" target=\"_blank\">It all depends on whose ox is being gored<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And some side notes. I used Governor&#8217;s Island as a secondary objective in June, 2022, when I tried to kayak across New York Harbor, from Statue of Liberty park to Manhattan. (<a href=\"https:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=13067\">My visit to The Big Apple \u2013 June 2022<\/a>.) And in September 2016 I kayaked across the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=Awrii9V9bpdkEb4lxaVpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzUEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1687674622\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fThe_Narrows\/RK=0\/RS=TZUVeYspHmI2_04dVh1rFVEyD84-\" target=\"_blank\">Verrazzano Narrows<\/a> from Staten Island to Brooklyn. (<a href=\"https:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=8922\">Looking back on \u201cthe summer of \u201916<\/a>,&#8221; and links therein.) Fortunately the tide was just right in September 2016. It neither swept me back into New York Harbor nor swept me out to sea, past Sandy Hook. I didn&#8217;t have that luck in June 2022. After an hour&#8217;s paddling I got no closer to either Manhattan or Governor&#8217;s Island, so I turned back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But we were talking about looking to the future with both a &#8220;happy eye&#8221; and sober perspective. Which brings up Donald Trump and his possibly getting a second term on <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrNYTGigZdkZOsmSNFpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1687679523\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2f2024_United_States_presidential_election\/RK=0\/RS=GGObyS15XXhaq.MZvcKMel6U_VA-\" target=\"_blank\">Election Day &#8211; 2024<\/a>. (November 5.) And the fact that to many, the thought of such a second term would be a true <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nightmare\">nightmare<\/a>, illustrated below. Thus the question: &#8220;Will we still be able to look to the future with a Happy Eye &#8211; even if Trump gets elected to a second term in 2024?&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I reflected on such a second term in &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=8597\">Why it might be better\u2026\u201d (Gasp<\/a>!) That was in August 2019, well before the 2020 election. (I worried a lot, even<strong><em> that<\/em><\/strong> long before Election Day.) I thought it might not be<em><strong> too<\/strong><\/em> bad, for reasons including that he&#8217;d immediately become a political <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0geJaHbkDtdraQANGZpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBybGY3bmpvBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMyBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1564213595\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fLame_duck_%28politics%29\/RK=0\/RS=SYkhRyl9V_imrk3.ErSGEisJvnA-\" target=\"_blank\">lame duck<\/a>, and that such lame-duck presidents both lose power but often become more concerned with their legacy.
