From there I&#8217;ll join my two hiking companions and start the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrFQq4KjVVkb8cWyQdpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzIEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1683357066\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fGR_70\/RK=0\/RS=tq8wjnesTJgsbTEPR7DbdRxo6IE-\" target=\"_blank\">Robert Louis Stevenson Trail<\/a>. (In&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrNPyn3k1Vkgb4YNFhpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1683358840\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2ffr.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fLe_Puy-en-Velay\/RK=0\/RS=n1rsFQX88hUuvA3QcuN.KaSgpWQ-\" target=\"_blank\">Le Puy-en-Velay<\/a>, 340 miles southeast of Paris.)&nbsp;Which brings up a post I did some time ago, on why an old guy like me would keep on doing things, like a multi-day 150-mile hike in a far-away foreign country. (Like Italy&#8217;s <em>Way of St. Francis<\/em> last year, and before that three separate hikes on the Camino de Santiago.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John Steinbeck explained it pretty well.&nbsp;He began Part Two of&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrJ_s7Vnqxkot8FsWFpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1689063254\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fTravels_with_Charley\/RK=0\/RS=ncw.WmpsH8dtnfchvV1o.e35qsE-\" target=\"_blank\">Travels with Charley<\/a>&nbsp;by noting the many men his age who \u2013 told to&nbsp;<em>slow down<\/em>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;\u201cpack their lives in cotton wool, smother their impulses, hood their passions, and gradually retire from their manhood.\u201d&nbsp;(They \u201ctrade their violence for a small increase in life span.\u201d)&nbsp;But that wasn\u2019t his way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>I did not want to surrender fierceness for a small gain in yardage\u2026&nbsp; If this projected journey should prove too much then it was time to go anyway. I see too many men delay their exits with a sickly, slow reluctance to leave the stage.&nbsp;<strong>It\u2019s bad theater as well as bad living<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In plain words he didn&#8217;t want to turn into just another <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrEtrZ0maxkleAEIx9pCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzIEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1689061876\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fidioms.thefreedictionary.com%2fold%2bfart\/RK=0\/RS=Ve1IU2WKk18CU7gh2xRUsKQ9SwM-\" target=\"_blank\">old fart<\/a>, and neither do I. (I.e., an older person, typically male, who holds &#8220;old-fashioned views.&#8221;) By the way, that Free Dictionary definition has a disclaimer, that the page &#8220;may contain content that is offensive or inappropriate for some readers.&#8221; To which I would say, &#8220;Get over it, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrFCTDDmqxkCPgFARNpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzMEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1689062212\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.urbandictionary.com%2fdefine.php%3fterm%3dNegative%2520Nancy\/RK=0\/RS=X11JwRKNFLRnvIzV09tK4z7.vzM-\" target=\"_blank\">Nancy<\/a>!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And speaking of old farts, Steinbeck was 60 years old when he wrote <em>Travels<\/em>, including that stuff about Old Age. To which I would say, &#8220;Punk! And <em><strong>young<\/strong><\/em> punk at that!&#8221; (<em>Oh to be 60 again&#8230; <strong>Not!<\/strong>)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But we were talking about 150-mile hikes in foreign countries, and why an old guy would still do them. Partly because they are&nbsp;<em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pilgrimage\" target=\"_blank\">pilgrimages<\/a><\/em>, giving us a break from \u201creal life,\u201d from the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.urbandictionary.com\/define.php?term=rat+race\" target=\"_blank\">rat race<\/a>. That last part doesn&#8217;t really apply to me; I&#8217;m retired and can enjoy life. But as we started to say on the <em>Way of St. Francis<\/em> last year, &#8220;It sure beats playing bingo at the Senior Center!&#8221; Aside from that, a&nbsp;pilgrimage&nbsp;can be \u201c\u2018one of the most <em><strong>liberating<\/strong><\/em> of personal experiences.\u201d And on a Camino hike that hot shower, warm bed and cold beer at the end of each day helps too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond that, I wouldn&#8217;t want to be guilty of Bad Theater. Then too, my brother Tom &#8211; one hiking companion next September &#8211; reacted to a past-pilgrimage blog-post and had this to say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>Read your blog on the trip and I think there is one point where you give [undue] credence to the&nbsp;view of the&nbsp;\u201cpat-pat\u201d people of the world.&nbsp;The issue is the idea&nbsp;that only people, \u201cnot in their right minds,\u201d would go to places (or do things)&nbsp;that are&nbsp;unique experiences \u2013&nbsp;ones that most others never have. In my mind, this is exactly what people in their right mind <strong>should<\/strong> be doing.&nbsp;I pity those who don\u2019t.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Which mirrors what Stevenson said in <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Travels_with_a_Donkey_in_the_C%C3%A9vennes\" target=\"_blank\">Travels with a Donkey in the C\u00e9vennes<\/a><\/em>. (On his 12-day, 120-mile solo&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hiking\">hike<\/a> through sparsely populated, impoverished&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/C%C3%A9vennes\">C\u00e9vennes<\/a>&nbsp;in south-central France.) He described one night setting up camp in a place &#8220;black as a pit, but admirably sheltered.\u201d&nbsp;He ate a crude dinner \u2013 a tin of bologna and some cake, washed down by brandy \u2013 then settled in, despite the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrNZXQUca1kX0oQaLtpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzIEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1689117077\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.dictionary.com%2fbrowse%2ftempest\/RK=0\/RS=57DebG5tW7lH5ICP7ekTOLVhL7o-\" target=\"_blank\">tempest<\/a> around him.&nbsp;As he put it, \u201cThe wind among the trees was my lullaby.\u201d He woke in the morning \u201csurprised to find how easy and pleasant it had been &#8230; even in this tempestuous weather.\u201d&nbsp;He then&nbsp;<em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.urbandictionary.com\/define.php?term=wax-poetic\" target=\"_blank\">waxed poetic<\/a><\/em>, in part about seeking such adventure all his life:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>Alas, as we get up in life, and are more preoccupied with our affairs, even a holiday is a thing that must be worked for.&nbsp;To hold a pack upon a pack-saddle against a gale out of the freezing north is no high industry, but it is one that serves to occupy and compose the mind.&nbsp;And when the present is so exacting, who can annoy himself about the future?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>On a Camino hike today you focus, you concentrate solely on getting up in the morning and reaching that day&#8217;s down-the-road destination. On how good the fresh-squeezed orange juice and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrErjYac61kcxoQUe5pCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzUEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1689117594\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.coffeecircle.com%2fen%2fb%2fdifference-americano-cafe-creme\/RK=0\/RS=ds2dw6ySSEZyymaV.n1ACRTnn48-\" target=\"_blank\">Caf\u00e9 Cr\u00e8me<\/a> taste now, and how good that first cold beer at the end of the day&#8217;s hike will taste. You are <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrNOr6Jc61k4ZgQ7mZpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzYEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1689117706\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.mindful.org%2fwhat-is-mindfulness%2f\/RK=0\/RS=aioj7yPSjMoIHnfs2zKQajh0zUE-\" target=\"_blank\">mindful<\/a>. You experience the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrJ_s7Qc61k.0cQimppCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzMEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1689117777\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.yourdictionary.com%2feternal-now\/RK=0\/RS=HTpQplfKivLBcbUKvHpHQNloWyc-\" target=\"_blank\">eternal now<\/a>. In plain words you <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrhQDEqdK1khPYPwmBpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzMEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1689117867\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fidioms.thefreedictionary.com%2fnot%2bgive%2ba%2brat%2527s%2bass\/RK=0\/RS=TA0TkqjeaT9_sPKXsT3yt0n0qLI-\" target=\"_blank\">don&#8217;t give a rat&#8217;s ass<\/a> about the future and what problems it might bring. That in itself is liberating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These days we have plenty of <em>future<\/em> to worry about. (Things that might happen but hopefully won&#8217;t.) So it&#8217;s rewarding to take a break from the nowaday sleepless nights and concentrate on reaching today&#8217;s destination, everything you own on your back, and looking forward to that hot shower, warm bed and cold beer.
