In that election Republicans&nbsp;won control of both houses of Congress, which most pundits said would happen again in 2022. But after the 2010 elections &#8211; when Republicans won both houses of Congress &#8211; they proceeded to ignore the economy, threatened to default on the national debt, &#8220;and<strong><em> did <\/em><\/strong>shut down the government.&#8221; The negative reaction was such that in <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrFGcMtsWlj1VMHDUFpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1667899822\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2f2012_United_States_elections\/RK=0\/RS=dwQZ.cr1vmUpOiQjPRPtY94UoDM-\" target=\"_blank\">2012<\/a> Democrats <strong><em>regained<\/em><\/strong> control of the Senate and President Obama was re-elected to a second term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But first a word about the painting of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrFYJ64.4Nj9h4viTNpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1669622840\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fNell_Gwyn\/RK=0\/RS=5m2DjW5qBvN2LQ0ologZbxPbWfg-\" target=\"_blank\">Nell Gwyn<\/a>. For the life of me I couldn&#8217;t figure out what lead image to use for this post. I searched images for &#8220;predicting the future,&#8221; &#8220;prophecy,&#8221; looks of &#8220;surprise&#8221; and even images for &#8220;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrFcNY54X5jwBwp6C5pCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzIEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1669288377\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fidioms.thefreedictionary.com%2fknock%2bme%2bover%2bwith%2ba%2bfeather\/RK=0\/RS=T5REqiJuSJJyJ4aTo2KQPKGy9kM-\" target=\"_blank\">You could have knocked me over with a feather<\/a>.&#8221; <em>(The phrase that came to mind about how I felt the morning after the election.)<\/em> Finally I searched past posts, and found one from last January, on the issue of voter suppression. There&#8217;s more detail in the notes, on the topic of what I feared might impact the outcome of the election. But fortunately that didn&#8217;t seem to be an issue, at least <em><strong>this<\/strong><\/em> time. Besides, Nell <em><strong>does<\/strong><\/em> present an attractive image, which may be why she was the favorite mistress of King&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_II_of_England\">Charles II of England<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting back to <a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=13620\">Before the election<\/a>, I predicted that if &#8220;2010&#8221; happened again, that might lead to a Blue Wave in 2024. <em>(With Joe Biden getting a second term.) <\/em>The problem? In 2022 Democrats <em><strong>retained<\/strong><\/em> control of the Senate, though the results aren&#8217;t yet all in. A Georgia run-off between Warnock and Walker is set for December 6.<em> (&#8220;Oh boy! More negative political ads!&#8221;) <\/em>But the 2022 results clearly disappointed <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrFajVfVYFjTogKxRBpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1669449184\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.foxnews.com%2fpolitics%2fcongressional-republicans-reckon-disappointing-election-results-knives-are-out-source-says\/RK=0\/RS=dbbhIWYcLUHJMtgKLKdLKh1VjwQ-\" target=\"_blank\">Republicans<\/a>. <em>(See <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrFajVfVYFjTogKxhBpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzIEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1669449184\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fabc7chicago.com%2f2022-election-results-midterms-republican-party-donald-trump%2f12435369%2f\/RK=0\/RS=Sgv4VSLddgHYah7BJngK.GWKz_c-\" target=\"_blank\">2022 Election results: Some Republicans blame Donald Trump<\/a>, and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrFajVfVYFjTogKyBBpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzQEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1669449184\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fnypost.com%2f2022%2f11%2f09%2fgraham-cruz-admit-election-results-not-a-republican-wave%2f\/RK=0\/RS=XxKPwmrvRS8h_HLhkoFeialJ7DQ-\" target=\"_blank\">Graham, Cruz admit election results &#8216;not a Republican wave<\/a>.&#8217;)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrE_IkoVoFj4cwJnh9pCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzIEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1669449385\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fidioms.thefreedictionary.com%2fflip%2bside\/RK=0\/RS=oAqLsU7dThdkehhh0MfUCq0lgUM-\" target=\"_blank\">flip side<\/a> is that Republicans <em><strong>did <\/strong><\/em>get control of the House of Representatives. That means they can still: 1) ignore the economy and inflation, 2) threaten to default the national debt,&nbsp;and 3) shut down government. On the other hand, if they impeach Biden &#8211; as threatened &#8211; the result will likely be a no-vote <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrEsa6_WIFjj6kK_ItpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1669450048\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.merriam-webster.com%2fdictionary%2fwhitewash\/RK=0\/RS=AJLxOO08mXXHiOIq5KNA_0IxxGQ-\" target=\"_blank\">whitewash<\/a>, courtesy of a Democratic Senate. <em>(Not unlike the one Trump got from the Republican Senate.) <\/em>That could result in Joe Biden ending up <em><strong>more<\/strong><\/em> popular, like what happened to Bill Clinton.<em> (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrFNsNzWYFjoA8K8NJpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzMEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1669450228\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.cnn.com%2fALLPOLITICS%2fstories%2f1998%2f12%2f20%2fimpeachment.poll%2f\/RK=0\/RS=nrWKYDqB8tGAR4yq1KRslIKzivE-\" target=\"_blank\">Poll: Clinton&#8217;s approval rating up in wake of impeachment<\/a>.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bottom line is that after many long months of hearing predictions of a Red Wave, I woke up the morning of November 8 with a sense of gloom. Not that I oppose principled conservatives. The problem comes when one of two necessary parties becomes a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrEsa6zZoFjHfYKq4VpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1669453620\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fCult_of_personality\/RK=0\/RS=VC_aIgWLXNQT.B7nCoT0qlYynco-\" target=\"_blank\">cult of personality<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I could just see Donald Trump &#8211; in the days after November 8 &#8211; basking in the glory of &#8220;his&#8221; candidates taking over Congress and paving the way for <strong><em>his <\/em><\/strong>re-election. <em>(Which would become more of a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrFRm0cZ4FjY2sLTINpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1669453724\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fidioms.thefreedictionary.com%2fbloodbath\/RK=0\/RS=IFVa6zXzFmzOZX.uCKNIu3SNyf4-\" target=\"_blank\">bloodbath<\/a> of retribution rather than responsible government.) <\/em>Which brings up the phrase &#8220;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrFcNY54X5jwBwp6C5pCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzIEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1669288377\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fidioms.thefreedictionary.com%2fknock%2bme%2bover%2bwith%2ba%2bfeather\/RK=0\/RS=T5REqiJuSJJyJ4aTo2KQPKGy9kM-\" target=\"_blank\">You could have knocked me over with a feather<\/a>.&#8221; According to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrFcNY54X5jwBwp6C5pCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzIEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1669288377\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fidioms.thefreedictionary.com%2fknock%2bme%2bover%2bwith%2ba%2bfeather\/RK=0\/RS=T5REqiJuSJJyJ4aTo2KQPKGy9kM-\" target=\"_blank\">The Free Dictionary<\/a>, it&#8217;s an &nbsp;expression&nbsp;of&nbsp;&#8220;great&nbsp;or&nbsp;utter&nbsp;surprise,&nbsp;bewilderment,&nbsp;or&nbsp;astonishment.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>* &nbsp; * &nbsp; * &nbsp; *<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img src=\"http:\/\/veritusgroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/olddognewtricks-2015-July22.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In the meantime, I learned something new just after the election. That was prompted by members of the House <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrEss.x84NjZCIuC59pCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1669620785\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fFreedom_Caucus\/RK=0\/RS=F5kZyuG5ZDwUfr2aa1mj63h_hQY-\" target=\"_blank\">Freedom Caucus<\/a> saying Kevin McCarthy wouldn&#8217;t have the 218 votes needed to become Speaker of the House. (<em>When&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/congress\" target=\"_blank\">Congress<\/a>&nbsp;re-convenes next January.&nbsp;The link is to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=Awrih61_SHZjMDMHsBVpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzIEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Nj\/RV=2\/RE=1668724992\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.msn.com%2fen-us%2fnews%2fpolitics%2fmarjorie-taylor-greenes-worst-nightmare-could-be-coming-true%2far-AA148FsH\/RK=0\/RS=iXscRGdPP7zjAgOA4CPdbQ2kQm8-\" target=\"_blank\">Marjorie&nbsp;Taylor&nbsp;Greene\u2019s Worst Nightmare Could Be Coming True<\/a>, dated November 15, 2022, which assumed &#8211; and as happened &#8211; that Republicans <strong>would <\/strong>win back the House.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on such threats &#8211; &#8220;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrJ_50zrIJjV84cpkBpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1669536948\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.nbcnews.com%2fpolitics%2fcongress%2fconservatives-warn-mccarthy-dont-votes-speaker-rcna57171\/RK=0\/RS=TvQS8e3NPyQ.V1J7fPP1.2eIyMY-\" target=\"_blank\">McCarthy doesn\u2019t have the votes<\/a>&#8221; &#8211; I did some research. I learned that to become Speaker a candidate needs 218 votes from<em><strong>&nbsp;any and all<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;House members. I assumed it required only a majority vote of the new party in power. So for example if a few Republicans voted \u201cpresent,\u201d that would lessen their majority and could \u2013 theoretically &#8211; lead to a Democrat elected Speaker.&nbsp;<em>(And vice versa.)<\/em> Go figure. 71 years old and still learning new stuff.<em> (Thus the &#8220;old dogs&#8221; image.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And speaking of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrNanf3mnVjP5YbH31pCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1668680567\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fnosweatshakespeare.com%2fquotes%2ffamous%2fstrange-bedfellows%2f\/RK=0\/RS=Oe6wgMSNJeAsCZp_cG2QZl1k70c-\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018Strange Bedfellows<\/a>,&#8217; just <em><strong>after<\/strong><\/em> the election <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/marjorie-taylor-greene\">Marjorie Taylor Greene<\/a>&nbsp;broke with conservative allies and pledged to support McCarthy. That lead <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrFGwZRsYJjWvkcvN1pCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzMEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1669538257\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fnews.yahoo.com%2fmatt-gaetz-under-federal-investigation-003733327.html%3ffr%3dsycsrp_catchall\/RK=0\/RS=FBWvUZgaycXKH3rlntdXn4MCPCU-\" target=\"_blank\">Matt Gaetz<\/a> &#8211; the Congressman <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrFGwZRsYJjWvkcvN1pCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzMEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1669538257\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fnews.yahoo.com%2fmatt-gaetz-under-federal-investigation-003733327.html%3ffr%3dsycsrp_catchall\/RK=0\/RS=FBWvUZgaycXKH3rlntdXn4MCPCU-\" target=\"_blank\">Under Federal Investigation For Sex Trafficking<\/a> &#8211; to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=Awrih61_SHZjMDMHshVpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1668724992\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.newsweek.com%2fmatt-gaetz-marjorie-taylor-greene-mccarthy-endorsement-1759525\/RK=0\/RS=cT7XLr_H2npuitbI_wmr2mqXMgc-\" target=\"_blank\">turn on Greene Over McCarthy<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>&#8220;Whatever Kevin [McCarthy] has promised Marjorie Taylor Greene, I guarantee you this at the first opportunity, he will zap her faster than you can say Jewish space laser,&#8221; he&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/patriottakes\/status\/1592310214329765890\">said<\/a>&nbsp;&#8230;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/marjorie-taylor-greene-jewish-space-laser-mockery-1565325\">referring to a conspiracy theory<\/a>&nbsp;the congresswoman has promoted and been criticized for.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The bottom line? We&#8217;re in for an interesting few months. <em>(And beyond?) <\/em>For one thing, we&#8217;ll see if Democrats have a 50-50 Senate majority, or  more solid 51-49. As it turned out, that was not necessarily an issue in this last election. The issue focused on the different number of black people in Iowa, compared to that number in Georgia where I now live. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><em>According to&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrE19R6DethyzYAFxdpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzMEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1642823163\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fsuburbanstats.org%2fpopulation%2fhow-many-people-live-in-iowa\/RK=0\/RS=nq8XT_EMVicW1Pg.bdVWnU3gb3Q-\" target=\"_blank\">Iowa Population demographics 2020, 2019<\/a>, African-Americans make up&nbsp;<strong>two percent<\/strong>&nbsp;of Iowa\u2019s population. (Which is 91% white, with \u201cHispanic or Latino\u201d as the second-largest racial group.) Compare that with Georgia \u2013 where I\u2019ve lived for 10 years now \u2013 which has a black population of&nbsp;<strong>32.6 percent<\/strong>. (While \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Non-Hispanic_White\">Non-Hispanic White<\/a>s\u201d make up only 50.1 percent of the population \u2013 a bare majority \u2013 compared to Iowa\u2019s 91 percent white population.)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The problem was that the &#8220;nice lady&#8221; who asked about voter suppression came from Iowa, meaning I had to frame the issue in a way that made sense with someone from a &#8220;lily white&#8221; state like Iowa. Eventually I dropped the topic, but did enjoy revisiting Nell Gwyn.
