(&#8220;The two worst crises of this period were the\u00a0<a title=\"1973 oil crisis\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1973_oil_crisis\">1973 oil crisis<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"1979 energy crisis\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1979_energy_crisis\">1979 energy crisis<\/a>, when the\u00a0<a title=\"Yom Kippur War\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yom_Kippur_War\">Yom Kippur War<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iranian_Revolution\">Iranian Revolution<\/a>\u00a0triggered interruptions in Middle Eastern oil exports.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>Maybe the Good Old Days weren&#8217;t all that great <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">either<\/span>&#8230;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">But seriously, I&#8217;ve been looking for a quick and easy new post. (Since I last posted on June 15.) I found\u00a0<em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/georgiawasp.com\/?p=9167\" rel=\"bookmark\">On Week 8 of the Coronavirus shut-down<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, from May 11, 2020. I wondered how things looked &#8220;way back then&#8221; &#8211; in 2020 &#8211; and what may have changed since. As part of this update I googled &#8220;what have we learned from the pandemic.&#8221; I got 181 million results. (181,000,000.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">But first, here&#8217;s a review of that &#8220;Week 8&#8221; post. It started with <strong><em>my<\/em> <\/strong>definition of the first full week of COVID. For me it started the weekend after Thursday, March 12. That&#8217;s the day the <a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1625534895824_432\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=A0geKeiuseNgfgoAqMtpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1625563694\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2f2020_ACC_Men%2527s_Basketball_Tournament\/RK=0\/RS=l5AgM30ta6ZjYtP5TGT.KkO.IXg-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-461=\"60e3b1aeb81ef\">ACC Tournament<\/a>\u00a0got cancelled, followed shortly by cancelling March Madness and the college baseball season, along with the NBA, NHL &#8220;and other major professional sport seasons.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/secureimages.teach12.com\/tgc\/images\/m2\/wondrium\/courses\/8552\/8552.jpg\" alt=\"The American West: History, Myth, and Legacy\" width=\"233\" height=\"131\" \/>I noted that even back then &#8211; early on in the pandemic &#8211; I managed to keep busy.\u00a0For one example, I did things like\u00a0watch a lot of lectures from\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0geKaB.yLZecl0Ak0NpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBybGY3bmpvBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMyBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1589065983\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.thegreatcourses.com%2ftgcplus4\/RK=0\/RS=kyRNfobQKGWfxiFXbBoHnYmI4os-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-baa=\"5eb6c87f4a4f9\">The Great Courses Plus<\/a>,* especially while keeping busy exercising. And one such course featured a quote on how &#8220;we&#8221; used to cope with such disasters in those <strong><em>Olden Days<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Like the Olden Days when Americans &#8220;conquer[ed] the <strong><em>American West<\/em><\/strong>.&#8221; (Put another way, how the\u00a0\u201cconquest and settlement of the American West transformed the United States from a regional republic into a continental power.\u201d) That included a quote from\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrJ7J1LDbheQmgAicBpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByOHZyb21tBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1589149131\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fFrederick_Jackson_Turner\/RK=0\/RS=ix_WeLZ24nO0_UjyhAvlcVCqpFM-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-245=\"5eb80d4bb9b78\">Frederick Jackson Turner<\/a>, who noted that the process developed key elements of the American character:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Domesticating the frontier \u2026 forced Americans to live by their wits,\u00a0<strong><em>to cooperate,<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>to revert temporarily to earlier stages of civilization, and to embody a more wholehearted democracy than anything on offer in the Old World.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Jackson added that Americans working to tame the frontier learned &#8220;to adapt, to\u00a0<strong><em>cooperate with one another<\/em><\/strong>, and to<strong><em>\u00a0treat each other as equals<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d\u00a0(Emphasis added.) He said that by such means as mutual cooperation and treating each other as equals, they \u201csubdued the wild lands around them, working out ideas and techniques unknown to their ancestors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I was struck by Jackson&#8217;s words &#8211; like \u201ccooperate with one another\u201d and \u201ctreat each other as equals.\u201d\u00a0To which I could only say,\u00a0<strong><em>\u201cWhat the hell happened?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">* \u00a0 * \u00a0 * \u00a0 *<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So what did happen? And what has happened to us over the past year of COVID? Beyond that, have we learned anything from it? And maybe even come out stronger and better?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This is from the University of Pittsburgh,\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1625187777591_456\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=A0geK.fAZd5gIGEAxz9pCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzQEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1625216576\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2finside.upmc.com%2fone-year-later-lessons-learned-from-the-pandemic%2f\/RK=0\/RS=4.UzaExpVum3AJhrQ2qKNIlGioE-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-af1=\"60de65c0f1354\">One Year Later: Lessons Learned from the Pandemic &#8211; UPMC<\/a>. From it I\u00a0gleaned two valuable lessons:\u00a0Lesson Two: Constant, clear and\u00a0<em><strong><a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrJ7Ju97.FggEgAMrRpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1625448510\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.merriam-webster.com%2fdictionary%2fadaptable\/RK=0\/RS=RaX7u0oW8JymOQRkXzn2Mf2lbYQ-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-060=\"60e1efbe08b6c\">adaptable<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>communication is key. And <strong><em>Lesson Number One<\/em><\/strong>: Be prepared but expect additional surprises. And that&#8217;s a lesson that pretty much ties in with that great quote from the 1957 film,\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=A0geJaJoZ95gsl4AWrFpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1625217001\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.moviequotedb.com%2fmovies%2fbridge-on-the-river-kwai-the%2fquote_28068.html\/RK=0\/RS=5RU_iU1mxeE4Q6DGPiWp3aU3GhQ-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-b7c=\"60de67695cecc\">The Bridge on the River Kwai<\/a>, &#8220;There&#8217;s always the unexpected, isn&#8217;t there?&#8221; (You can see a short clip from the movie itself, with that quote:\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1625188098316_1959\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrE19gAZ95gKxQAhRZpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzMEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1625216897\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fgetyarn.io%2fyarn-clip%2f7d322b91-40aa-4456-af79-d11e938725d2\/RK=0\/RS=LtcZztLxLMccUmJyhK2Q4Q8HuI0-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-141=\"60de67015be4e\">YARN | Yes, there&#8217;s always the unexpected, isn&#8217;t there<\/a>?&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And BTW, <em>adaptable<\/em> means &#8220;able or willing to change in order to suit different conditions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.biblicaltheology.com\/job\/Job-2.jpg\" width=\"211\" height=\"264\" \/>In turn, from the <a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrE1xg4AeFgoW4AqhRpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1625387448\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fAARP\/RK=0\/RS=ayNXBxFaxEOiGJmoYeS3tVOv19c-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-9fa=\"60e101389c79e\">American Association of Retired Persons<\/a>, I checked out\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1625188812776_35\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrJ6yjLad5g77gAv3BpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzIEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1625217611\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.aarp.org%2fhealth%2fconditions-treatments%2finfo-2021%2flessons-from-covid.html\/RK=0\/RS=JKgpWyHce1tC8JqPn56W0tqu7jA-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-c37=\"60de69cbed0f8\">15 Lessons the COVID-19 Pandemic Has Taught Us<\/a>.\u00a0Lesson 12: You Can <strong><em>Hope<\/em> <\/strong>for Stability \u2014 but Best Be Prepared for the Opposite. (That is, &#8220;the opposite of stability.&#8221;) And that thought seems to mirror\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=AwrE19Zzat5gbjQAHvRpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1625217779\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fbiblehub.com%2fjob%2f5-7.htm\/RK=0\/RS=CW71_W1vhxqlfvyY86YchBD0_aY-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ff4=\"60de6a73894fc\"><em><strong>Job<\/strong> <\/em>5:7 &#8220;Man is born to trouble as surely as sparks fly upward<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And finally, there&#8217;s\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_10_0_1_1625358033524_471\" class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=A0geKeTQ_uBgtDsA_EZpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzYEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1625386833\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2ftinybuddha.com%2fblog%2fthe-most-important-lessons-we-can-take-from-this-pandemic%2f\/RK=0\/RS=Ygk2LI6_a92G_yEK..B8pl7pkh8-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-5ed=\"60e0fed12fbd5\">Important Lessons We Can Take from This Pandemic\u00a0<\/a>. (From the &#8220;tiny buddha&#8221; website. &#8220;Simple wisdom for complex lives.&#8221;) One such lesson?\u00a0<strong><em>The power of stillness.<\/em> <\/strong>&#8220;Our lives were put on pause, many were forced to work from home&#8230;\u00a0With this, we were given the power of stillness and the opportunity to unapologetically slow down.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Other lessons? Family and friends are important, and often taken for granted. &#8220;Our health is gold,&#8221; something else we too often take for granted. And &#8220;nature still thrives,&#8221; and may indeed be getting a much-needed break from too much travel and too much people-pollution&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">* \u00a0 * \u00a0 * \u00a0 *<\/p>\n<p>Which brings us back to my post on COVID&#8217;s Week 8.<\/p>\n<p>Looking for answers about what a person can <strong><em>do<\/em> <\/strong>in times of\u00a0<a class=\" ac-algo fz-l ac-21th lh-24\" href=\"https:\/\/search.aol.com\/click\/_ylt=A2KLfS5T8eFgIPEAVFVpCWVH;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzQEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny\/RV=2\/RE=1625448915\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fdictionary.cambridge.org%2fdictionary%2fenglish%2fupheaval\/RK=0\/RS=9zJeCd9Zp2e9MTOelhcQGpFGyeY-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-5fe=\"60e1f153cc6f7\">UPHEAVAL<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 &#8220;with elements of panic and destruction let loose&#8221; \u2013 I turned to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kenneth_Clark\">Kenneth Clark<\/a>&#8216;s 1969 book\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Civilisation-Personal-View-Kenneth-Clark\/dp\/B0016XQ7LQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Civilisation<\/a>. He talked about how Europeans coped with the violence during the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=A0geK.Tre7Re6xgAPjtpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTBybGY3bmpvBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMyBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1588915307\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fProtestant_Reformation\/RK=0\/RS=8daPMkwEUuhYBmNOoyqEKXJ6R8I-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Protestant Reformation<\/a>\u00a0in the mid-sixteenth century. (Europe was &#8220;full of bully boys who rampaged around the country and took any excuse to beat people up\u2026 All the elements of destruction were let loose.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>One\u00a0short-and-sweet answer, \u201cKeep quiet, work in solitude, outwardly conform, inwardly remain free.\u201d And that pretty much ties in with what\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Voltaire\">Voltaire<\/a>\u00a0said in his 1759 novel\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/r.search.aol.com\/_ylt=AwrE1xXqcrReUYEAYjNpCWVH;_ylu=X3oDMTByNXM5bzY5BGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMzBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--\/RV=2\/RE=1588913003\/RO=10\/RU=https%3a%2f%2fen.wikipedia.org%2fwiki%2fCandide\/RK=0\/RS=iDz3g_tmQsw9jmGfYTk7pqZ1i.E-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Candide<\/a>, by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Voltaire\">Voltaire<\/a>. &#8220;We must all [just] cultivate our own garden.&#8221; Or &#8220;tiny buddha&#8221; put it this way:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;And the people stayed home. And read books, and listened, and rested, and exercised, and made art, and played games, and learned new ways of being, and were still. And listened more deeply. Some meditated, some prayed, some danced.
